(Old) The Snowed In MMP

One of my all-time favorite reads! I read the first Callahan’s story (The Guy With the Eyes) in the SF Magazine in was first published in (Analog) and was an immediate fan. And I agree, I think Mike and his regulars would approve of us.

For those wondering what we are talking about; Callahan's Crosstime Saloon - Wikipedia

Morning all, have broken fast and since indoor soccer was cancelled and it’s 32F and warming, will probably venture out to the gym and try to work off all those excess calories I munched on yesterday. Otherwise nothing much on the agenda, might do some Hoovering, but that’s for later.

Cat Glove, definitely a more productive day than I had.

I pity the other food…

Yep. Me too.

shoe, I trust the quiche was worth the time and effort.

Flyboy, that is a change I don’t understand; was it just you or the other folks in your pay grade? Seems a bit strange either way. Hope it works out for you. And most of my hair has gone away due to heredity, so can’t help you out.

VanGo , enjoy the parental visit.

FCM, I never wanted a leadership position myself, just a job that I could do well and the respect and liking of people I respect and like. In those terms I have done pretty good, I think. And love the hat Roxy is wearing; heart of an artiste in that girl.

Taters happy dog-washing.

And onward into the day. Have a good one all.

She said ‘some’ people don’t need to be salaried. She didn’t give a reason. I was hourly when I started, almost 18 years ago. Everybody had to clock in and out, on an actual time clock with time cards. A couple of people would take two- or three-hour lunches and go shopping, so we had to clock out and in for lunch too. They finally decided it was more trouble than it was worth, and we didn’t have to clock in and out anymore. I’ve always worked more than 40 hours per week, and never got paid overtime.

I’m technically a manager, since I moved into my boss’s position when she retired. No people under me, but I have the title. I take my computer with me on vacations so that I can get stuff done. The programs I’ve written allow one person (me) to process all of the data, instead of four or five people. I put my signature to official documents (Agreements) with BMCRA. I’m proud of the data that goes into the reports we sell. I consider myself a professional. I’ve always felt part of a team. No I just feel like an employee.

Heretic!

Gibson Guitar at Opry Mills used to have a work room behind glass for the public to watch guitars, mandolins, etc being made. It was very interesting.

She did a great job. I’m glad that she enjoyed it.

Up, caffeinating, breakfasted and fixing to do KP. The big chore of the day is suiting up to go out and brush off the car. Shoot, I might even drive it to go get supper (I have a gnawin’ and a cravin’ for aig rolls).

Stay safe and healthy y’all!

To quote Roxy - It’s not a hat! It’s a bonnet!! She sleeps in it to keep her hair from getting too out of control. I’m guessing it’s pretty typical for those with curly, curly black hair. Looking artsy-fartsy is just a bonus!

She’s only done about a dozen stitches so far - the picture is printed on the fabric and she’ll stitch over it in the appropriate color. Her greatgrandma (my MIL) used to do cross-stitch and Daughter is passing it on in the hopes that Roxy will remember her. Plus, frankly, I think everyone needs to know how to handle a needle, if only for buttons and tiny tears. But that’s another story.

The sun is shining and last night’s snow is melting. I’ve cooked the rice and it’s cooling. When I told FCD about the recipes with the tomato sauce and how I don’t like them, he suggested Alfredo sauce. I chased him out of my kitchen. He’s reaaly good at a lot of things, but cooking ain’t one of them.

Anyway, I may just create my own version. What could go wrong??

@SCAdian and yet, no photos? No visual evidence of these magnificent creatures?

{ hmph }

Oh, isn’t that fun. Dueling “experts” telling you the opposite things.

However … love the mermaid, and are those SUNFLOWER pajamas?!? :sunflower:

Kids these days have all the cool stuff. My inner 7-year-old is so jealous.

I don’t intend to put mine away until roughly the spring equinox, or DST time change.

Purty lights!!

'Sides, my house, my rules.

Well done, good sir.

… and two trecks to the Gettin’ Sto’ in the blowing snow uphill both ways but … oh my, yes. Finally, around 1:30 or 2 inna morning, I had my damn long-awaited friggin’ quiche.

Tasted like victory.

And will continue to for some time, cuz if you cup one hand, that’s my idea of a meal portion.

World’s most emo children’s book.

Oh, you meant “tears,” not “tears.” Got it.

(The English language is weird.)

Bless his heart.

He … tried?

Someone should start a “worst kitchen catastrophe” thread.

That’s a really shitty feeling.

Well, my little hatchback barely made it back up the driveway last night, after Meijer v 2.0, and a quick glance outside at the car-shaped igloo confirms we got more overnight, so a certain lazy-ass bitch will, at some point, hafta go shovel. And then Long Night.

I need a nap just thinking about it.

JtC Ariel is of 2 minds about the snow. She doesn’t mind it unless it is blizzarding. She ALWAYS wants to be outside unless the snow is blowing in her face. One snowy day the horses were inside and she wanted out. I took her out of the stall. She went out the the barn door, took one step outside, and turned around to go back in. It still makes me laugh.

I don’t feel like going out today. I’m gonna stay in my pjs all day.

Edited to add. My lung screening CT came back with no changes from last year! Chance of malignancy less than 1%.

Ursala with Gingerbread Kitten.

Well, the car has gone. Called a local company, and they had it collected within 2 hours- despite the tow truck getting a puncture on the way, which I think really sums up my life lately…

Went to the garden centre to celebrate- I’m really bad at not going to garden centres, and with the lack of car lately I’ve been getting withdrawal symptoms. They had a bunch of stuff on clearance…
I didn’t spend too much, considering, but I’ll be going back in a few days with another student very into houseplants, who has a membership allowing 2 free hot drinks in the cafe a month. We have a standing arrangement, as I drive and he doesn’t, and while getting there on the bus is possible, it’s a massive pain. Getting back on the bus with a biig pile of plants is even worse, so it kinda works out for both of us, even if I do feel a bit like I’m taking my nephew for a day out due to the age gap.

We still have no snow, and it’s supposed to start thawing tomorrow. No fair. At least I can maybe do some of the outside work I wanna get done; at the moment it’s too icy.

Yep - for whatever reason, Daughter decided years ago that Roxy’s flower is the sunflower.

I suppose I could have said rips…

The snow in the drive is melting, so obviously, I made the right choice about shoveling. I am SMRT! It’s after 11 and since I breakfasted more than 4 hours ago, I think I shall lunch, then decide how I’m going to cook the stuffed/not stuffed cabbage stuff.

My plan exactly, for the very same reason. When I pull up at my humble house to park at night, tired and frazzled after a draining day, there’s my twinkly tree in the big picture window in the front room and it feels like it’s reaching outside with those twinkly lights to welcome me home and to draw me inside for comfort and rest. Then, once inside, shoes kicked off and The Kitteh and I ensconced on the couch for hours of reading, all I have to do is lean forward slightly and turn my head to the left for another glimpse of that twinkly dose of welcome and comfort from the other side.

Ain’t never going to take down that tree. My one concession is that the lights are all LEDs and they are on a timer to run from sunset to sunrise, so I’m being somewhat kind to the environment. If I could compost used coffee grounds and cat litter to produce electricity to run those magic twinkle lights I would, but alas.

I’m intentional in my self care. Granted, to onlookers I have no doubt it looks chaotic, but it is self care, albeit idiosyncratic and messy. They can have my twinkly :christmas_tree: lights when they pry them from my cold dead hands. Of course they’ll have to move the cat off my lap first, but that’s intentional too.

Thanks FCM, Sahirrnee, shoe and Taters for the brand of pierogies to try - sounds like there’s a pretty strong consensus that any other brand would be a mistake!

Misnomer the Lego Pac-Man is too cute!

I think you are the nicest “mean” person I’ve ever met :joy: Also, the Door to Nowhere was amazing. RIP to the Door. Also, I love stumbling across random stuff like that.

Ummm how amazing is this table?! I love it! How quirky and colorful.

I would also be upset. Do you at least get overtime pay now? I would ask to meet with them again and let them know you feel a bit blindsided by the change and need to know a little more about why. You obviously know your boss better than we do, but it might be good to tell her how it’s knocked some wind out of your sails. They may not realize how people take that kind of thing.

peedin good news on the CT! And Ursala is a very pretty cat.

The chili yesterday was a success. I was a bit worried because I’d never tried that recipe before, but I’m happy with the result. But I didn’t realize just how much it was going to make - I almost had to transfer it to my giant stock pot! And of course that’s way more than I could possibly eat, but my future BIL has a similar problem with beef and vegetable stew he made on Thursday. So we will meet to swap some leftovers this afternoon.

Up, caffeinated, and sheveled. Off today.Looks like I got a call from work, but slept through it. Oops. The ice is melting rapidly here, but:

(cut and paste and take out the space, Discourse and Tumblr are having a snit or something.) Time for laundry!

I love it, especially the Mickey Munch chair!

:notes: egrets…I’ve had a few..but then again, too few to mention… :notes:

“I love it when a pan comes together.” - Hannibal Smith

That’s usual the hang up.If you do worl instead of interfering withmanaging other people’s work, you may not qualify as salaried exempt. Plus they raised the minimum for people to be considered exempt, so it may just be easier for El Jefe to have everybody punch in/out than calculate OT.

It’s a lovey bonnet.

“Before was was was, was was is.” is a real meaningful sentence.

Mine has been up since November 1st. 2002. It’s not sloth anymore, it’s Tradition!

YAY!

Theoretically, but it has to be approved in advance. I leave early on the one day a month I go to the office, so as to get home before 18:30. It’s at least a five-hour round-trip commute. So I put in extra time to make up for it. I usually put in extra time, so I more than make up for it. She’s OK with letting me continue to leave early on commuting days, and making up for it as I’ve been doing. I don’t know how she’ll take my routinely working overtime. I’m inclined to say, ‘Look. I can’t not work only eight hours a day. Let’s just say I’m hourly, and fudge the time sheets so that we don’t have to deal with overtime.’ It would be just like when I started.

I was thinking I’ll mention it to El Jefe (now the CEO) if he’s in the office when I’m there.

I much prefer Sophies Choice perogies.

doggio I was totally expecting a yeeting of that snow bowl off the table.

My dad called, and they’re not coming today. He said he’s feeling old, and the weather looks crappy. It is a 7 hour drive.

On the plus side, my jury duty was cancelled, and I’m off the hook for 6 years.

Do you mean Sophie’s Pierogis? sold in the old Peter’s Market in Garfield Heights, Ohio?

Sophie’s Choice Pierogis would be a whole ‘nother inscrutable cinematic reference that I cannot begin to untangle. Those would be very grim pierogis indeed.

Oop. Yes, they are sold in Mentor also.

Sophie’s Choice pierogis would make me cry.

My tree stays up until at least the end of January. However, we were with friends on Christmas Day and they said their tree comes down on Bill‘s birthday, which is January 19. Patti and I decided to leave our trees up until Bill‘s birthday, but I may leave mine up longer. Putting Christmas decorations away is like putting friends away. Yes I talked to them!

Half a bagel with salmon cream cheese, bacon and tomato on top, and a side of scrambled this AM. S’posed to get more snow starting today and running on into tomorrow. May even get a couple of inches.

The wife has been obsessing over Swedish meatballs, which I don’t care for. Instead of making them, I talked her into getting a similar thing off the lunch line at the local grocery. So meatballs and egg noodles for dinner with a side of lingonberry jam. Went to a different grocery store than our usual place and found all the brioche bread a person could hope for, so French toast is in the near future. Also, with the marginally warmer weather, I finally got the car gassed up.

I’d like to note that an 18 pack of eggs is now over $9. But I’m sure the incoming prez will fix that.

I’m glad for everyone’s good news and good times. Nice table and chairs! Cute kiddo!

Flyboy, I’m sorry. That’s just weird and icky feeling.
