(Old) Time Is On My Side (?) - A Daylight Savings MMP

It’s awful, isn’t it? Mine are pretty much preventative/maintenance visits so far, but up until a couple of years ago, I didn’t have a neurologist or a cardiologist and now I have both. What’s next - dare I speculate?

IMHO, that’s a stupid, outdated rule, unless it’s between boss and direct reports. I was an occifer and FCD was E-5 when we married, but we were in two completely different commands. He’d also checked with his senior CPO to make sure there wouldn’t be a problem. And we both got out within a year anyway. But apart from a couple of tight-ass officers in my squadron who didn’t speak to me, there was no blowback. So, yeah, dumb rule.

Back from Food Lion - no luck on the root beer. Maybe tomorrow? I also ran into Aldi, hoping to maybe get a nice chunk of corned beer, but every one they had looked so fatty! So I passed.

It was starting to rain as I drove home and FCD had called to tell me he left Otis in the yard. Poor pup was standing forlornly on the porch when I arrived, but he’s indoors, cookied, and chilling. I’ve stowed my few purchases and I’m about to start pulling out the sewing stuff.

We’ve lost about 20 Ferrets in 3 hours and the wind has been rather wicked. Feels and looks more like autumn than spring - dreary day. I just want to plant myself in my recliner, but stuff needs to be done and I need to do it, alas. Once I assemble the sewing stuff, it should be about 11 - my lunch time! So I have that to look forward to.

Well, the plumbers got here and recommended that I replace the lines with ones overhead and in the attic, better material and should mean no more leaks (at least while I’m residing here). Costs another big whallop of dollars, but decided to go ahead and be done with it, so the start of next week is booked for that. Good thing I’ve been adding money to my savings the past couple of years, think I’m going to need it.

So I have the day free, need to buy a new overhead fan and get it installed (at least that can go on my credit card) and the power charger cord for my phone (the one I plug into the wall) isn’t working so need to stop by Verizon…March 2026 is becoming a rather expensive period.

Coppertone, good news.

Hippie, quite impressive

Knots, glad you are still doing the RSB thing after a rather painful start, IIRC. Hope the shot works well.

wet one, lots of shots is no fun, but I guess the result of not having them is even less fun. And hope the MRI results aren’t too bad.

Taters, rain has left the area and the sun is out, but temperature is 43F and I doubt there will be soccer tonight.

Mollie, a “Logistics Auditor for Military Intelligence” is a tough one to parse, but as long as he enjoys the job.

FCM, hope Otis is dry and happy now.

I think I’ll leave the comments to doggio..

And if I’m going shopping best git’ed done now, so take care all.

Dammit - and I always proof my posts before I hit reply. Obviously not well enough…

Lunch has been ingested. Time to start cutting fabric.

A bit heavier heaving today. I did my Senior Day shopping after work. Now to drag Roomie to PT, then nap.

Hope the tea and workout make you feel better, boofae.

It snowed in Boone, N.C. this morning.

He’s gonna end up with the nickname “Lefty”, isn’t he.

Yay!

The three stages of life:

  1. The doctor gives you shots.
  2. The bartender gives you shots
  3. The doctor gives you shots.

Well, there’s no point going mad without power.

Corned beer: For when you’re looking for pub in all the wrong places. :four_leaf_clover: :beer_mug:

How is it Thursday already? I kind of feel like I haven’t had much of a spring break between car shopping and going with my wife to doc appointments.

Today is her follow-up with the cardiologist. We’re expecting it to be more or less “the test was wrong, there’s nothing wrong with your heart, nice to meet you”.

Then home to veg. Maybe get out to treat myself to dinner (having breakfast out now).

Opened the door to get the paper this morning and there was a package there. Turns out that the wife accidentally subscribed to a cheese/meats package some time ago. I caught it the first time it came and told her to cancel it (we don’t have the room or the appetite for that much cheese), but she forgot about it. So this was the third iteration at $95 a pop. I took the matter in hand and killed it. These companies are often sly in their marketing, hoping that you won’t notice that you are subscribing instead of making a one-time purchase. And cancelling is not always easy.

Nothing on the agenda today other than housekeeping coming to muck out the swamp.

High winds forecast starting mid-day tomorrow, which will blow in a couple of storm systems, the second of which may dump some snow on us.

I’ve been following the Iditarod race. It’s one of the things we miss about living in Alaska. Over half of the racers are already in the old mining town of Ophir, which is about 350 miles from the race start, which was last Sunday. Mush, doggies!

FCD has fallen into that trap a few times - his brain is going one way but the website leads him down another path. One of the worst was when he was looking for a template for a legal form. Bad enough he paid $5 for something he could have gotten for free, but he also signed up for a $259 annual service that we didn’t need. Thankfully I caught it right away and he was able to cancel it. Sometimes the man makes me crazy…

It’s raining steadily now. Otis has crashed in the living room - no longer interested in going outside. I’ve got the various and sundry bits of fabric cut out, marked, and ready to sew. But I don’t want to sew. Don’t want to do anything. So I’m taking a break. Again. 'Cause I can and 'cause FCD isn’t home to make me feel guilty about taking a break.

I got some mahi mahi at Food Lion - that’ll be supper.

Yesterday I bought an assertive camembert cheese, which is in the fridge and smelling it up something fierce. We’ll have it at lunch today together with some cold cuts, crusty bread, grapes, and olives. Then I should break out my most airtight Rubbermaid container to house the leftover camembert.

I’ve planted my dahlia tuber, using guidance from youtube experts, and have crossed my fingers. I hope my experiment does well. Meanwhile I must prune fuchsias and last year’s pansies, and check on my herb pot garden. We’re having an early and warm spring and I hope to take advantage of it and get plants into pots right now, before March 21. It should hit 79 degrees today, and later this week we’ll see 89 degrees. Phew.

I want to get a bunch of petunias for the planters on the front porch - they do well there as long as I remember to water them. Not sure if Lowes has any yet. I’ve decided I’m not going to do a veggie patch, but I will do some 'maters in 2 big planters on the back porch.

It’s dropped below 40 Ferrets and the accursed white stuff is falling! It’s mixed with rain and I doubt there will be any accumulation, but it’s still mega-ick out there. FCD just came home and I’m trying unsuccessfully to persuade him to nap. And I’ve decided not to sew, tho I’ve got all the pieces ready to go. I’ll do some figgerin’ for my galley layout instead. All I need is some graph paper and a few dimensions.

And I found a recipe for air fryer mahi mahi - sounds good, and the fish is on the counter to thaw. I’ve got a nice head of cauliflower, and I’m thinking maybe green beans, too. That’s a lot of decisions I’ve had to make.

I almost fell for something like that. There are sites that supposedly let you do your own will, and imply that it’s free, but the fee and the annual cost is hidden until you get to the page where you have to place the order.

It’s clear and sunny after “tornado weather” overnight. Nothing exciting happened here. A few limbs are down and the dog and I will hike around later to check out the forest and clamber down to the branch so she can have a dip at the canine swimming hole. It will be full after the rain.

Coffee was quick and dirty today, no frills. Bustelo in the auto-drip.

A housemate has returned and I’m off duty, so I didn’t have to get up at 6 to open the doggie-door, yay!
I have no excuse not to put on respectable clothes and head to town with a list, boo!

But that’s okay because later:
A neighbor (I’ll call her Granny Gossip) and I plan a Safety Meeting this afternoon at 4:20. We’ll have some pretentious coffee, keto cookies, and political differences of opinion. I’ll hear all the latest scandals about the nutty people in her nutty community.

Boofae Oh, yeah, I am definitely doing my damnedest to be RDOS!

Flyboy “Cackleberries!” I haven’t thought about that in a long time. When I was a kid, there was a whole fad of knowing diner terms. Then I spent a few years in the industry and learned all the real kitchen terms. That was an education.

red I’m a-workin’ on my A1C and can’t have any sugar, but the diet nurse says that if I have a meal with carbs, to combine it with fat or protein to spread out the effect, or something like that. The ice cream effect makes sense; it has the fat in it.

doggio “Bless her heart” Hah, perfect! I edited the language for politeness: Way back when, dam’yankee was one word, and that’s the word my mother used.

Metal Mouse I am just across the border into Jawja, and still tune in to James Spann when the weather is bad.

FCM Is FCD’s tetanus up to date? (forgive me I can’t help it-- that’s a reflex question out here in the boondocks.)

LH75 Hand sewn! Amazing! I looked up the EPP method and I could get interested in that because I’d prefer handwork over the machine any day.

No trip to town today; golly what a letdown. A neighbor has truck trouble and the housemate has gone to assist. It’s an ill wind . . . .
So off to take the princess Lab on a bushwhack and see what kind of wind damage there is.

One of the (many) things I miss about living in Portland was the planter boxes I built for the rear deck, in which I planted the common herbs that I like to use. For some reason it didn’t occur to me to buy an in-house planter with a grow light for the apartment. So I’ve ordered one from Amazon for about $70. With the cost of herbs at the grocer (most of which end up in the trash), it will likely pay for itself quickly.

Yeah - he’s got a tendency to do himself bodily harm. But I will remind him to talk to the doc at his next semi-annual once-over.

Damned snow is starting to whiten the yard - I posted a pic on FB. Stoopit weather - we were mid-80s yesterday and it’s in the 30s now. All those lost ferrets…

Last month, the electricity bill was almost $350. The Missus leaves a radiator-style, oil-filled space heater on in her room all the time. Last month, the extension cord it was plugged into melted. (I didn’t know that it was plugged into an extension. I told her she shouldn’t do that.) But it hadn’t been a problem before. We surmised that the heater was failing, and that’s why the bill was so high.

We got a new heater, and today we got a new bill. Almost $315. So I guess it wasn’t the heater after all. Now why have our electricity bills gone up 50%? I called PSE. They said that the last two coal-fired generating plants in Washington were shut down at the end of December, and they have to buy electricity on the more-expensive open market now. Bonneville Power Administration is apparently charging more for using their lines, too. While our usage (approximately 1,500 kWh/month) has remained the same, the price per kWh has gone up from 13¢ to 21¢… basically 50%.

In other news, I’ve been offered a full time position as a teller with a credit union, for slightly more money than USPS was offering for their part-time Rural Carrier Associate position, plus benefits and raises. I start Monday.

Lunch was leftover Chicken Piccata and chocolate cake. Mrs Magill took me to dinner last night. The Piccata was good, but I think I should have gone with the Marsala. Ah well, there will be other dinners.

Cookie - My sister gave me a indoor hydroponic herb planter for Christmas. They grow pretty fast in that thing. I like the ability to collect fresh herbs a will. The rabbit likes that he’s where the pruning goes.

Flyboy - Good to hear. Benefits are always nice.

The verdict on my ankle? A tendon is fraying. Cortisone shot is not an option. It could rupture the tendon. Surgery is overkill. The solution ? Yep, you guessed it. Physical therapy! I have the PT facilities ranked and my number one can’t get me in for a month, so I’ll hit up the joint behind my house which is ranked #2 on my list. Ice it nightly, rub it with Volteran cream. And wear a brace which I will do when I am wearing gym shoes cuz it won’t fit in any other footwear.

Posting pics here question. What image host do you use? And how easy it is to post links? I’m using Imgur which is almost impossible to figure out. And is it easier to generate the links from a laptop vs a tablet?

Congrats!!!

Yesterday’s high here was 85 Ferrets. These were taken just a few minutes ago:

We are most definitely not amused. Dammit.

Here’s hoping they’re right about tomorrow being sunny and mid-50s.

I use Flickr. To embed images, you just open the picture in Flickr, hit the “share” button, and copy the URL. You then paste the URL in your post as its one separate line.

Afternoon all. Did get out of the house and was productive, first bought a ceiling fan to replace the one that broke and started all this commotion, and then arranged for it to be installed on Friday. The went on a Braunschweiger re-run and scored enough tubes to last to the end of May (it helps I’ll be gone for nearly 3 weeks in April). Also stopped at Verizon and got a new wall charger for my phone, the USB ones work OK in the car and my computer, but l like having options and the direct charging tends to be quicker IMHO. And just got a call that my Euros are at the bank ready for pickup, so I’ll probably run over there when I finish this. Next thing is waiting to see if the soccer fields will be open tonight or not, I’d say there is a 40% chance of them opening, but I won’t know until 4pm. So may end up exercising late like last night.

Pavo, fingers crossed that your wife’s prognosis is as you say.

Cookie, thanks for the warning, I have avoided things like that so far, but will exercise caution in ordering nonetheless.

FCM, I have found that there are some days where your brain just says “F*** it all, I’m taking the day off”. Sounds like you’re having one of those days.

lucky, wrapped slices of processed fat-free American cheese is about as adventurous as I get. Hope the dahlia and all the other flowers bloom beautifully.

GenJ, I see you are adapting to life in the MMP quite well. Enjoy your time with Granny Gossip (great nickname). And enjoy the Lab walk.

Flyboy, I run a space heater in my ‘computer’ room (where I am now) but not to extreme and electric-only, plus I have natural gas heating, so my electric bill is lower, but my combined electric/gas bill for March approaches yours. And good news about the job. Sure you’ll be great at it.

And speaking of financial places, need to go get them Euros. Back later.

it’s snowing!!! whee!!! does snow dance. whoot!!
