I have Irish ancestry on my mother’s side (also English, Scots and Welsh), but I don’t go in for pub crawling and have never celebrated the fact of that heritage. That said, I’m wearing a green tee today (my Seabee shirt), but it’s a coincidence.
Supposed to be in the 50s-60s today and tomorrow, then a blizzard blows in. I don’t think we’ll get much in MSP, but south of here could get clobbered.
I guess my neurologist still hasn’t joined the 21st century. Apparently the office can’t deal with faxed requests for meds refills, and when you call, you get a receptionist who takes your info and passes it to the nurse. And with luck, you hear something in 24-48 hours. Which cuts it close, since I run out on Thursday. Had I known the fiasco, I’d have called last week. You’d think they’d at least accept emails from patients, but that’s not an option. eeeesh.
If I don’t hear by the end of the day tomorrow, I’ll go down there Weds and talk to someone face-to-face. Inconvenient, but I kinda need my meds. Then there’s the matter of making sure I have enough when we go on our cruise - that will likely be a face-to-face conversation.

Happy St. Paddy’s Day to those who give a darn! I give only the smallest of darns, myself, despite being 50% Irish: I’ve never been one to mark the day by going out/drinking, so it’s mostly just like any other. But when I chose which t-shirt to wear this morning, I did pick a faded Guinness shirt that I got at a Kohl’s a long time ago. If I were gonna be on camera or out in public I’d add my silver shamrock earrings, but today has been/is likely to continue being pretty solitary. (not complaining!)
I succeeded in accomplishing very little yesterday. Mostly I just watched a lot of TV, but I did make some progress on my nephew’s Batwing. With new Lego sets, the pieces come in numbered bags for easier assembly: each bag covers a certain number of steps, and contains just the pieces you need for those steps. Because this is a set that I disassembled and am putting back together I don’t have the numbered bags*, but I have the build instructions so I’m tracking my progress by how many “bags” I’ve finished: there are 12, and I’ve finished 4 (33% done!). It’s finally starting to look bat-like:
*The main difference is that it can take a while to find the pieces needed for each step: instead of only searching through the pieces in that particular bag, I’m searching through all 2300+ pieces at once. I’ve separated and organized them, but it still takes longer.
[2:20pm: I just exchanged a few emails with the recruiter for the position I interviewed for on Friday; she asked about my salary requirement, and when my coverage ends. I hope this means she’s working on an offer…the stress/not knowing is going to kill me!!]
Ahhhh, gotcha! Thanks for explaining how your place does it.
Ha!
I don’t hate that idea, but there’s more to me than Lego…like being a jazz singer…hmm, I wonder if I could make the sign on my Lego jazz club work?? One problem with these avatars is that they’re so tiny: it’s often hard to tell what they are! I’ll definitely have to do some thinking, and experimenting with images.
Sometimes you guys make it hard for me to love you…
That’s more like it!
I can’t drink beer anymore since my bariatric surgery (carbonation is a no-no), but I miss having a meal-in-a-glass Guinness every now and then.
Same here!
I signed up for the weekly email, but I only read the “five answers to five questions” columns (the ones where the title ends with “and more”). With the others, I got tired of reading an interesting question only to be directed to another publication/site for the answer. I get enough out of the 5/5 columns, though!
This morning I didn’t even think of wearing anything green, and I’m still not wearing anything green, nor do I have Guiness. It seems I gave my husband food poisoning (we think), so he threw up.
At least he’s feeling better.
I have one of those, but in black. My dad buys a bunch of them and then asks visitors if they have one. If they don’t, they get one.
FWIW my vote is for the record player or the grand piano. You do have a lot of music related Lego.
I enjoy Guiness, but I’ll also drink a Kilkenny. Don’t have either, so I suppose it’s Scotch for after dinner. Yesterday I had an Oatmeal Stout from Samuel Smith. I like oats.
Spring has sprung, but it’s very springy. Mornings will be freezing, or almost sub-freezing all week, but the highs will be around 16°C/60°F. And windy.
Oven timer’s about to go off, I think. The lemon blueberry cake is making its presence known.
Afternoon all. Just got back from the shopping and sammich run, the leak detector was here for almost 2 hours, did a through job and we think we have it pinned down. Now need to get the plumbers out here and hopefully solve this issue with only modest effort (ha!). But it’s 2:15pm right now and I have my gym training at 3pm, so it might be tomorrow before I can contact them, we’ll see how it goes. At least I am moving on it.
It’s one of those days my mom used to say "the sun is hot but the air is cold’ still only 53F outside but very nice to look at from a warm house.
Rilchiam, sounds like some drama associated with your friend’s passing, I hope things work out for the best. And I know that I do not have any of those devices (wxcept maybe the measuring spoons). Hope she enjoys them.
FCM, sounds like the office is stuck into a routine…from the 1980’s. Hope it gets worked out.
Oopsie, the batwing looks like it will be something special when it is done. And anticipating good news on the job front soon.
And need to pack the gym bag and head off to exercising. Catch up with y’all later.
I went for the nerve block which will determine if I will have an ablation to help the pain in my knee. At this point I’m thinking the answer is no. The car ride home from the doctors office which is about a 45 minute trip was excruciating. Then after I got home and sat with Annie for awhile I had a new pain that I’ve never experienced before. I decided to go upstairs anyways because that’s what they said to do.
That was a bad idea.
I tried to lay down and take a nap, but laying down wasn’t comfortable. Then I had MusicMan help me walk back downstairs. I sat back down in my recliner and was in horrible pain for over an hour until it finally settled down.
I called the doctor’s office because that was what the discharge instructions said to do. No one has called me back. I was considering going to the ER, but the one that we have here is not that great. I’m glad it has decided to calm down. Hopefully it will stay mild when I get ready to stand up again.
Rilchiam, I once bought an apple corer, only to discover it only works on symmetrical apples, which are rare.
I got some ingenious liquid measuring cups, with measure marks on a diagonal surface, so you can see them while looking down into the cup, instead of awkwardly bending down to look sideways.
The esteemed Yogi Berra said, “If you don’t go to people’s funerals, they won’t go to yours.”
Growing up spring things that were not religious got pushed to the vernal equinox. Candy, bunnies, chicks, egg rolls, basket of goodies, etc. it was my mother’s compromise with my father’s western traditions with her very strict orthodox traditions.
Therefore peeps are equinox things. I will wear my peeps shirt and other peeps accessories starting on the 20th, along with other vernal related items until the solstice.
My mother had interesting ways of separating what she considered pagan from christian.
Tiny whisks. I tried to find some not from the jungle, but was not able to.
I delivered my boat today. Was quite the production. First, the lift gate on the rented truck was dead. Penske had to send out a tech to fix that. Then the damn door closers on the entry to the museum were bigger than I remembered, so we had to remove those. And finally, the floor in the place is not flat. I need to go back tomorrow and do some serious shimming to get things to line up properly. Not sure how I’m going to hide that…
And that rental truck had issues. It sort of hopped at 45 MPH. All in all, a long day.
Happy Paddy’s Day to all. As I start blathering it’s late afternoon as a crystal clear but breezy day draws to a close.
I’ve had my Irish traditional leftover biryani for dinner, with the equally traditional leftover Champagne to finish the bottle. I’m now hiding indoors as the amateurs get to serious drinkin’ n’ barfin’ out there in public.
In the ~3 weeks since BB & I returned from Norway my world has turned upside down. She and I have parted ways, almost certainly permanently. Not with anger, but with great sadness. There is simply no way to bridge the divide between the parameters of her life and the very different parameters of my own. Throughout the 11 months we’ve been together hope had sprung eternal that we’d find a path that worked. We thought we’d gotten that done before leaving for Norway. We got back and it had exploded in flames through no fault of our own. We’re devastated. We wuz wrong all along. I’ll be hard-pressed to find as high quality & compatible a person anywhere anytime. I just wish we could square the circle of our different phases of life.
I am trying to move on promptly and diligently, just as I did after wife #1 died and after I’d abandoned hope and moved out on wife #2. I’ve got a couple of starts on women more my age (read as “retired; not tied to a job”) and am taking a 5-day solo weekend in Punta Cana this upcoming weekend to clear my head.
Sigh. It’s always something. At least the stock market is crashing so I can take solace in watching a bonfire of my (and everyone else’s) wealth.
The rest of the mundanities remain just that.
Color me a tad discouraged, but far from despondent. Time for a new and once again epic chapter!
Well, pilot, that well and truly sucketh. But I do think going solo for a while is a really good idea. Step back, deep breath, proceed with caution and optimism. (As if I have any idea what I’m talking about.) Good thoughts headed your way.
Supper was good. I’ve biked and showered so I don’t have to in the morning. That’s because I’d made a 7AM dentist appointment for some inane reason! Anyway, all I have to do in the morning is brush my teeth, take my meds, and get dressed before I head to Leonardtown.
After I get home, it’ll be back to the boat to scrub some more. My achy butt and legs are less achy, giving me a chance to achy them up tomorrow! For now tho, it’s chillage and an early bedtime.
I went to get my hair cut after irk. There was a tiny Russian market a couple of doors down, but I haven’t been there in about four years. Now it’s a carniceria. I bought a pound of chicharrones, and two cans of menudo sin maiz (menudo w/o hominy). It’s hard to find the sin maiz. The proprietors don’t speak English, and my Spanish is very limited. The girl used her phone to translate when I asked if the store used to be the Russian store. Anyway, I’m checking out and she signals to be excused for a moment. She came back with a bag of fajitas de res. Free! I told her, ‘¡Muchas gracias!’
I got the corned beef and cabbage out for dinner. And I’ve poured myself a Guinness.
LSLGuy, I’m so sorry. But I wish you the best in moving on.
Okay, about that other time Brandon threatened the friendship. He retired a few years ago, and Mr. Rilch and I were looking forward to his retirement dinner. Thing is, we were also looking forward to a symphonic performance of the Superman (1978) soundtrack. Both those events were the same evening. Which we didn’t find out until after we’d had the symphony tickets for a while.
Long story short, Mr. Rilch went to the dinner, and I went to the symphony with my friend “Sally”. Mr. Rilch was determined that I at least should get to go; I mean, I’d planned my outfit* and was constantly humming the theme: “Da, da-da-da-da…da-da-da. Da, da-da-da-da — SUPERMAN!” I wasn’t there, but apparently it came down to him saying, “I’m not going to let down my wife,” and Brandon saying, “If you let ME down, our friendship is over.”
*And about that outfit. Mr. Rilch and I had also been to the symphonic Star Wars, for which we did not dress up, but did get selfies with multiple Leias, Hans and Obi-Wans. So for Superman, I wore a blue dress, red cloak and yellow belt. Sally wore a red dress, blue blazer and yellow belt. On the drive up, we were speculating about how many Clark Kents we’d see and get pictures with. Then we get there, and…no one else had dressed for the occasion. No one was even wearing a Superman t-shirt, much less horn rims and a logo shirt under a pulled-aside white shirt and striped tie. Zuh?
Howdy Y’all! Been home from men’s night for a bit. A good crowd on hand, and as usual, we solved all the world’s problems, but no one listens to us. Weird to be home before dark at eight p.m.
MOOOOOOM I can’t help it. Your sis brings out the romantic side of me. Plus, my version of *Close To You * is so much better than the original. Guinness is OK on rare occasions and is good in a stew, but as I said, not a fan of stouts in general.
Jas I know you have a Mumper nick, but my brain cells can’t remember, I am tres envious of that tshirt.
Rilch an excellent gift indeed! The happy couple will be most grateful, if not now, a few months down the line.
doggio we Jawjans say that in Etlanner you will be asked who your family is, in Macon, you will be asked where you go to church, but in Savannah, you will be asked what do you want to drink.
Pilot so sorry it didn’t work out for BB and you. Glad, though, that you are not too despondent.
I have no green clothes, sadly. Its my favorite color.
Anyway, my neighbor also was ghosted by our “boss”. So forget that job, thats unprofessional.
I do have an interview elsewhere tomorrow.
About the nice guy at church.
Still not sure, is he way helpful or interested.
Numerous times hes driven me home, out of his way.
Back in early Feb. he said with no prompting from me, If you need any help, let me know.
He has paid my feb and march rent, driven far to give me t.p. he bought.
He always comes to talk to me after church, or turns around to, as he sits in front of me.
He messaged me as soon as they put him back in his hospital room after procedure.
Today I was at grocery store abd checked my facebook and he asked if I was home cause he was there and was going to bring me t.p. ( he got the Good Stuff Charman.
I said I am here too!
We met at the front. He asked if I had a coffee maker cause he was “going to get you some packets of Dunkin”.
I said I dont but a dunkin gift card would be nice.
Then he offered to drive me home, opposite direction from his way home.
We talked non stop, we could have talked longer but I dont live that far.
I haven’t been asked out but no Christian has ever liked me before and most of the guys I’ve been with never spent a penny on me.
