(Old) Trick-Mump Treat! - A Halloween MMP

I was in the Mez this morning, and the building was deliberately short handed, for…reasons. I stopped and did my civic duty, nice to see there were a lot of people doing it. Plus, sticker

I wonder what happens if you run a Thing through a Brundle teleport pod?

Cats do not grasp the comcept of Standard Time.

Could be much worse

I like!

In my IS department, the term Scud is used for an incoming request, that you don’t know where it’s gonna land, or what the heck to do with it.

For example “Please add this field to this and link it to that by this evening.” Ummm…

We usually get some trick-or-treaters here, but the number varies wildly from year to year. In 2020, we bagged up candy and put it out on a decorated table with a sign, and that worked so well that we’ve continued the tradition. Kids get candy, we have a marked bowl of bags that don’t contain common allergens, and no one has to man the door. If the weather’s good, I’ll sit out there until dark to see the littler kids in their cute costumes, but there won’t be a bunch of chances for a cat to slip out the door.

We’re back from visiting our daughter and SIL! The pregnancy is, unfortunately, kicking her ass - she’s in the third trimester and her nausea had just subsided when she got an extremely itchy rash that not even oral steroids are helping. This is on top of all the other problems of pregnancy and an ongoing struggle to keep her meds at an appropriate level as her blood volume changes. I’m sure it’ll all be worth it in the end, but if this turns out to be my only grandchild, I won’t mind a bit.

The trip itself kicked Mr. L’s ass. We’re going to have to plan the many visits we’ll want to make in the coming year so that he has time to rest between flights and so the flight times are reasonable. We got back a week ago, and he still hasn’t bounced back - he’s using a cane full-time, even in the house, now.

My FIL was always fascinated by the idea of living in a camper. After his eldest son died in 2016, he bought a small travel trailer. He lived in it in our driveway because it was too much for him to drive, and he came into the house regularly to pee on our bathroom floor and make a mess in our kitchen because it was just too unwieldy to hook up the plumbing for the trailer. It was just as well, since cleaning up after himself was not his forte.

We ditched almost all of our Halloween decorations when we made the move to apartment living. Trick or treaters are not allowed in the building, so no candy buying. The PT woman told us that she bought a five pound bag of candy at Costco. :open_mouth: My wife always enjoyed the kids coming by in Portland. In Anchorage we either got one or none, depending on which parent the one kid who showed up was staying with that year. In Portland we usually got about 50 each year. We’d hand out small bags of saltwater taffy.

Looks like our dinner may be cancelled, as the Ms is not feeling her best today. Woke up with a sore throat, which could be from snoring, but she’s also feeling lethargic. I just handed her a COVID test kit to make sure it’s not that. We seem to do a lot of cancellations. Things sound like a good idea, but then we’re overcome with lethargy or something. Perhaps it’s the stress of the political atmosphere in America nowadays.

Or maybe Beerman?

Legend, hope daughter does ok and has a beautiful child. And hope Mr. L is doing well, how long a flight was it (sometimes the airport size and waiting around can wear you down almost as much).

Cookie, best wishes to the Missus. looks like a lot of MMP’ers are not having the best start to the week.

Sub sammich is assimilated to so off to the gym I go. Hope they finally have the jacuzzi working again…

i survived the social laden weekend.

on to this week’s wildness.

work party on weds. i will wear this really cool animal print coat thing. i got it from the halloween store. at first i got the large size, that was unbelievably big. i look like a kid who got in thier dad’s coat closet. i went back and got the small size. that fits well.

i will keep the big one for a robe thing. cat ears to wear with it. i’m not sure if i will add the tail.

for thursday trick or treat at the condo i have a scooby doo shirt and hat. i will wear it to the office as well.

friday we have electical certification at the condo. there will be emergency electricity for about 6 hours. it is a thing they do every three years or so. i will have to hope that lager’s food dish will work on the battery back up. the water fountain will go quiet so i’ll put out a water bowl for him.

lager’s test results came in. he is a healthy kitty cat and still in remission. that is a relief. he just has the occasional bout of pancreatitis.

I won’t be giving out candy this year: I’ll be on the couch watching TV, with the porch light and all of the street-facing lights off. Sometimes that doesn’t deter the candy-seekers, so I’ll be extra glad to have a lockable storm door. I’ll probably watch my copies of The Great Pumpkin, Practical Magic, and Hocus Pocus.

Lunch with my friend/former co-worker yesterday was great. We sat and gabbed for 3 hours (the place was empty so the staff didn’t care), and could have talked for longer but she had to go meet her daughter. I ordered a 14" pizza so I could have leftovers: it’s a place we’ve gone to countless times in the past 23 years, but somehow I’d never gotten pizza there before! It was alright – I have a low bar for pizza, and am about to have a couple slices for lunch – but I won’t get it again.

Afterwards I was feeling deprived, because of my favorite bakery not being open and not being able to get their excellent scones, so on the way home I went to Trader Joe’s for the first time in several months and bought a package of their vanilla bean scones (and many some other treats ). Just past the register there was a display of reusable TJ’s shopping bags, and when I saw what was on one of them I actually did a double-take and had to take a picture for JtC!

I’m sure several of my fellow shoppers were wondering why the hell I was stopped in the walkway, giggling and photographing a shopping bag. :joy:

In other news, my new storm door will be getting installed on Wednesday afternoon! Woo hoo! I thought for sure I wouldn’t hear from the installer until the end of the week and then would have to wait 1-2 weeks to get on their schedule, but they called this morning!

At 7pm I’ll be watching a virtual interview with one of my favorite contemporary authors, Louise Penny. Book #19 in the Armand Gamache series is being released tomorrow, and Barnes & Noble is sponsoring a live Zoom interview with her this evening. I bought my ticket two weeks ago, and am looking forward to it. It’s scheduled for 1 hour, so it will end just before the first pitch of Game 3 of the World Series. :baseball:

Catching up on the end of last week’s thread before jumping into this week’s…

Meh! Sorry to hear that.

There is: it includes both a TARDIS and part of the console room. But it’s a retired set – which is why that link goes to Amazon and not the Lego site – and is therefore $$$.

Yay! :tada:

Thanks, but I’d never be able to install anything like that on either laptop. However, a couple years ago I bought a Logitech keyboard and mouse that connect to up to 3 devices via Bluetooth. The only downside is that they have to be switched separately: sometimes I’ll switch the mouse but forget to switch the keyboard and wind up accidentally typing in – or, more often, deleting something in – the wrong place, but on the whole it’s a great combo and tons better than having separate keyboards/mice. I mostly work from home, but I take them with me whenever I go into the office.

Welcome back!

I know absolutely nothing about this stuff, but I’ve always heard that the air in AZ is very dry: could WV’s relatively (and possibly only slightly) higher humidity possibly be a factor in 70 feeling warmer there?

Sounds like a plan.

Whew!!

Hi guys!

MetalMouse, I loved the picture of your painted beard!

We are back from Cleveland and now I’m just sitting here with a loving poodle on my lap. Apparently there was a hunger strike while I was gone.

Howdy Y’all! We have worked on honin’ our RDOS skills today. Nappage and day drinkin’ were the highlights. Also we had an early sup. Productivity consisted of haulin’ the biiiiiig trash can back to where it lives durin’ the week. Soon it will be Netflix, chill and popcorn time.

Lucky I remember seein’ The Fly as a little cub and as I recall was skeerd. Wonder if I would laugh at it now.

Yanker Yikes! Glad the fire wasn’t too bad. Glad y’all had a good trip and welcome back.

WetOne* you give out the good candy! Hope you’re feelin’ better.

MOOOOOOM we roamed all over the area we lived beggin’ for candy as we got older. We would leave the house around six-thirty. We were told to be home by nine. We’d have quite the haul!

Wheelie welcome back. Enjoy the visit with the relatives.

Coppertone I like “sipper.”

Doggio I am very jealous of your sticker.

Legend hope daughter has an easier time and hubs is doin’ better.

Cookie hope wife is better soonest.

Rocker yay for Lager feelin’ better!

Oopsie glad you had a good time with your friend. I would have giggled and taken a pic as well.

My apartment complex is mostly one bedroom and studio units and definitely skews middle aged and older, so, even when I’ve had treats ready and the light on, I don’t get any little ghosts and goblins.

You are one of the good houses. :mage: :broom: :mage:

Glad you’re not all burnt up,yanker!

That was me when I moved to Tennessee. I still don’t like it.

You Tar Heels get the good stickers!

Went in to a mess at irk this morning. The prep that I did for the weekend cycle count got messed with. We got it straightened out, but I’m going to propose that we place our drop off rack outside the room and close up our doors.

Stay safe and healthy y’all!

In grade school (the 60s) we wore our costumes to school in the afternoon. Ran home, grabbed our paper bags, and t and t til dinner. After bolting dinner we went back out til 8 or 9 ish. Mom had to go through our haul, not for safety, but to take the Butterfingers for herself. I had my tonsils out in fourth grade right before Halloween and was crushed that I could not go out trick-or-treating.

Evening all, swimming and sauna were completed, but the whirlpool/jacuzzi is still broken, it’s been over 3 weeks now but they promise it’ll be working again by next Monday…we’ll see . Dinner cost me and additional $52 since the traffic was heavy so i decided to stop at Duluth Trading and got another pair of blue jeans. Dinner was Krystals (the South’s answer to White Castle) so I am well-filled. Might head over to the gym and watch the baseball and tackleball games while either pedaling or walking on the proper equipment. Won’t feel so guilty then about all the Tootsie Rolls I’ve been snitching (hope the candy holds out until Thorsday…). Down to 70F and another good night for sleeping seems to be in the offing.

rocky, good news on Lager, enjoy the party and survive the certification.

Oopsie, nice that you could get to see your friend and score some goodies at TJ’s. And the promptness in whihc your getting your door installed contrasts to the long delay the property folks provided you…

I think you may be right on that.

red, not sure what the work problem is, but I am confident that you’ve provided them with an easy and logical fix…now, wether they will do it or not…

And dinner is just about finished digesting, so I need to go get a pair of gym shorts and tee shirt on and head over to the sweatin’ place. Have a good evening all.

Just finished my shoulder stretching and bike riding, and I had my evening snack of a Gala apple with PB. Yum. I watched a documentary on Scott’s ill-fated trek to the South Pole. Now I’ll chill with yarn. It’s been a good day.

Happy Moonday!

Life has been rolling along. I feel busy, but nothing is getting done.

It was chilly, 36 degrees, at the park this morning. It was only Petey dad and us. It was nice, we were able to talk and catch up. Petey seems to like Misiu, so they will play a little.
Petey seems to have no trouble telling the boys apart.

We won’t be doing anything for Halloween. I don’t know if we will get TorTers out here. The houses are pretty far apart. We’ll have the lights off, we always do as we barely use the living room anyway.
My son asked me why I wasted money buying living room furniture since we never sit in there. Nothing is stopping him from sitting in there. He hangs out in his bedroom and I hang out in my office. Since the main reason I hang out in the office is to be near the door for the dogs, I could sit in the living room since the dogs can use the doggie door.
We’ve been here a year now and I’m still making some adjustments to where I want stuff.
I wish I had done some other things before we moved in, but I think it’s good that I waited for others since I have a better idea of what I want.
I really wish I had bought a new fridge. I hate the one we have, but I have a hard time justifying replacing a working appliance just because I don’t like it.

My son is making me crazy.
He used the last of something and said we need more. I ordered from da jungle. Then he pointed out that we are almost out of something else. So, another order to da jungle. Then again tonight. Three jungle orders in two days. I’d rather do one big order than three small ones.

Time for bed. I’ve been having trouble sleeping unless I turn the heat up all the way. Otherwise, the shivering wakes me up. I don’t know what is up with that.

Like Bubble Tea?

It sounds pretty intriguing and I have never heard of such a thing before. Thank you for sharing.

Do remember that all Halloween costumes look better after dark, so don’t stress if your daughter’s isn’t perfect in the light of the day.

I read your submission in the other thread, I sure do hope that things get better for you soon.

Do you have a piece of string? If so, cut a length as long as your daughter so you don’t have to keep poking your ribs while she is at school.

Did you have lines of kids coming to your house first?

Back when we were ToT, we had a certain order of houses. The big bar houses first, the popcorn ball houses never and the house on the corner where the woman made beautifully decorated cupcakes for special kids was last so we could sit on the porch stairs and eat them instead of risking dropping them on the way home or having Dad eat them while we were asleep.

I’m glad you have time to hang out with your siblings, I hope a good time will be had by all.

Man, that sticker is so much cooler than mine!

We’ve agreed that changing feeding time will be risky for Hubs health. (I have many, MANY good reasons to not be the designated gooshy fud delivery system, this just another one.)

Oh, that poor woman. I don’t know what would be worse, puking or itching all the time. But, she’s over half the way through this journey and then she will get a brand new baby with no instruction book.

I’m guessing that you don’t miss having FIL in your driveway that much?

All is calm in WV. I don’t think I’ve seen a trump truck since we’ve been here. I’m so glad we left AZ, the maganuts were all over the place and always mad and shouting.

I do wish that the act of voting would make the political calls stop. I’m blocking begging calls from one particular politician on a daily basis.

I like Beerman as well, but I’m not the one who’s going to be wearing the name. I think Chance or Random would also work considering the other meanings of Skud.

Good job!

Your costumes sound fab, and Go Lager!

I’m thinking that while being without power that long for a test would be annoying, being without power because the system failed due to the lack of testing would be even more bothersome. At least now you can find out if lager’s food dish works like advertised!

That is SO cute! Jolene is a very helpful kind of girl, it stands to reason that she would be a great TJ’s crew member!

“Oh, sorry, don’t mind me. One of my imaginary internet friends has an imaginary cat named…oh…where did you go?”

I hope you enjoyed watching the interview.

Oops, missed that. Dang about the plague. May you recover quickly and with no long term effects.

I know absolutely nothing about it either, but that’s all I can come up with. The humidity is noticeably higher here. We both suffered and sweltered during the heat wave which confused the locals. “You just moved from 110 to 90 and you are suffering? How does that happen?”

We used to fight over the AC, he wanted to live in a meat locker and I wanted to be able to feel my fingers. Our compromise included space heaters and strategically placed fans.

It is so much different here. I don’t feel nearly as cold inside even when he has the AC cranked and now that the temps have dropped, I can really feel the difference.

I’m so happy we don’t live there anymore.

I cried with his wife when she had to do that thing with the button.

The ending of the War of the Worlds gave me nightmares so Mom didn’t let me watch the Day of the Triffids. I still haven’t forgiven her for that! I should probably call her and remind her again, she always laughs at me when I remind her how she ruined my life back then.

I’m hoping it will be easier now that I’m a RDOS.

Put it in the freezer. That adds another step or two before making the choice to eat it. It sometimes works for me.

This afternoon a very interesting smelling (if you are a cat) package from @FairyChatMom arrived in our mailbox. Thank you so much FCM, the fabric is lovely and I will share pics of the chair when it is completed.

I used to have your mailing addy but it got lost during the move so I was waiting for the package to arrive so I would have your address again. When I opened my contact list and started typing your real name, your address popped right up. I’ve since fixed that, now you are FCM because that’s what I remember you as.

When I told Hubs that I wanted a check to send you money for postage, he realized that not only did we only have one check left, it had our old address. Good reminder to deal with that, thank you. The checks in the mail!

Besides the cats getting smells from the package, I also bought them a new bed to sniff and kneed. I bought them a dog bed because they don’t fit on cat furniture anymore and have learned that they have rules about this stuff.

Jolene owns everything. If she’s in a bed, that bed is hers. If GG is in a bed and she wants it, she climbs on GG and then pushes him around until she’s comfy. Sometimes that means GG has limbs or head sticking out and isn’t as comfy as he would like to be and he kinda falls/slithers out and goes elsewhere.

I thought that was because we didn’t have a big enough bed for them. WRONG! Jolene owns everything including GG and they both know it. (and Hubs, he’s such a sucker for her).

So you could have stuck with calling her Bellatrix.

You are so right! I almost posted that they were in a Dom/Sub relationship because that is just what I am seeing on a daily basis!

Up from naptime, having an Old Fashioned and watching late night hockey.

< crosses fingers >

Yay!

Yep!

105 and 0% humidity in Vegas is less uncomfortable than 90 and enough humidity to make a 105 heat index here.

Evening all. Some baseball and tackleball were watched as I pedaled and tread-milled my way to taking off a bunch more calories. Since i eat out on Mondays it is usually one of my calorie-plus days, but enough exercise got me into deficit territory today. Nearing 11pm so once this message is finished I’ll be heading off to dreamland.

FCM, just took my Cosmic Crisp apples out of the refrigerator so I’ll start on them tomorrow. Never cared for peanut butter, however, but the apple will do fine.

Sari, I seldom use my living room anymore either, it’s furnished well-enough, just no reason except for the occasional TV program I watch to watch. And maybe just add things he mentions to a list and order that list at set days 2-3 times a week.

And so to bed. Catch up on 2sDay.

My friend created a gmail account with that pseudonym as a joke; I called him on it and have adopted it.

Also, one does not sip scud. You gulp it down in large quantities, because it is weak beer (usually)

I forgot to mention one thing: you need to shake a scud before you drink, all the crushed sorghum grains settle to the bottom. So the other nickname is shake-shake.

One remarkable beerhall just outside Harare famously had “draught” scud - not quite on tap, and gravity fed from a huge tank in the roof. They had a fairly interesting device to pour. It was like an hour-glass. 2 litres went in the bottom, it was inverted, and flowed down “shaking” itself in the process, and then into your drinking bucket.

Oh, and I forgot. My stoner friends and I managed to gatecrash a prison officers* beerhall at a small gaol. They had 5 litre buckets there, the special was 4 litres scud and a 750ml bottle of Old Brown Sherry, mixed together.

It was as tasty as you can imagine. Still, we drank it.

* aside from times I have been arrested by the police (drunk in public), I have had remarkable success drinking with the police and army. With underage friends. Spectacularly, with Robert Mugabe’s personal bodyguards, in their supposedly highly secured compound, while stoned. I mean, 4 young white guys turn up at the gate to a secure military establishment in a run-down VW beetle, and the best they can do is salute and let us in? No questions about “what are you doing here” or “why”.

It became something of a favourite local bar.
