Just the smell of the yeast working in the rise was mouthwatering. This loaf (a batter bread) is made with dried oregano. I used both parmesan and romano cheeses. Toasted up a couple of slices to go with shrimp scampi. Tomorrow I’ll toast up some more to top with fried eggs. Been a long time since I’ve had good bread. I’ve yet to find anything decent here.
The storm finally moved on, but MSP got over an inch. Nothing to shout about, but fun to watch. There are a lot of tree limbs down because of both the snow weight and the high winds.
I have not yet consumed anything. I know I need to, but I keep putting it off. And I’m not hungry. I know! I’m resting my digestive system. Yeah, that’s it! I should drink water, though.
VanGo, that sounds beyond horrific. I’m retroactively appalled that this happened to you. I did get a chuckle out of you scaring off the JW’s, though. A friend of mine got a visit from them when he was very hungover.
“Have you thought about death lately?” they asked.
“All…the…time,” he said as he swung the door closed.
Should you be nervous? (Just kidding. You two seem to have a wonderful marriage.)
My dentures are to be finished and there in 12 days.
So warm out tonight. I saw a few trick or treaters go down the street and it really took me back; how much fun it was.
Sounds delicious! I always end up making potato bread with (cheater) store bought mashed potatoes in them. Then I decide if it’s going to be a loaf, pepperoni bread, or cinnamon rolls. I don’t veer too far off track of that.
Boo
I thought of you today when I was cruising through Michael’s looking for clay! They had the eyeball molds in the clearance section.
It was a long day, but a good one. I did go see my friend and I’m glad that I did because she looked so sad and disheveled. Apparently both of her legs are broken. Also, she’s taking it really hard about our other friend that passed away. Here’s the pasta princess that I ended up taking.
It was a good visit all around, though, because my mom had been told by a local doc that she had the beginnings of glaucoma. This doctor, who she’d been going to for years, said that she could potentially have it in the future, but that she’s ok for now.
So many horror stories were very tragic back then. The original Frankenstein was very sad as well.
Thanks, it would have been a super PITA had the disposal been running. Or if he had dropped it in the other sink because he refuses to leave the strainer thingy in that drain.
That does sound rather dangerous!
Sounds like how it was in AZ every year. Amazingly enough, here in WV, it was warm and sunny enough that if we had gotten any ToTers, their costumes wouldn’t be covered by heavy jackets.
Thank you for caring so much for your neighbors. You are one of the good guys. I hope you cool off soon.
That does look yummy! Kroger?
BAD! BAD! BADBADBAD!!!
Pics please. I never know how to look like that.
I was a trendsetter and did mine yesterday.
Welcome and how optimistic of you. Our housekeeper made a special trip to bring his little monsters over before they went to the big thing at the school. No other monsters have been seen and probably won’t because we are in the wrong area. (houses far apart and no children, just old retired folks)
You are a very good wife.
That sounds like wonderful storm food! Do you have a nice bottle of wine to pair it with?
I’m happy with you. That looks like the storm door we had put into one of our homes, great choice!
I’ll bet it looked amazing! I kinda stopped baking when we moved here because we don’t live close to his family and didn’t know the neighbors. Now we do know the neighbors and I have made a few friends.
That means I have people to give my excess baked goods to because we really do not need to be eating a whole batch of cookies three times a week by ourselves.
Baking will commence tomorrow.
That sounds like a good reason to go to the sto and buy peaches. A just cause peach cobbler would go down nicely in this weather.
At least try to sip some lukewarm water. I really hope you recover soon.
Of course. Why would the universe not take one more kick at you while you were down?
It sounds like a horrible experience, I hope the compression socks help.
Oh yeah, the sigh and disappointed look was guilt inducing from the start and then they would tell me that they didn’t understand what I was thinking because I was such a smart girl. Dad would make chocking noises and turn colors when I was honest about it “It seemed to be a good idea at the time” or “I’m 12. I don’t think” or the time I thought he was going to just explode “It looked so easy on TV.”
Yeah, I was the kid who tied a towel around her neck like a cape and ran off the roof, why do you ask?
Happily, they didn’t ever restrict books or library access so being grounded wasn’t so bad. It was the fear of The Talk and maybe giving my father a heart attack that kept me on the straight and narrow until I was no longer living in the same state as them.
I hope your cats don’t starve or dehydrate tomorrow.
I will also start baking bread again. WV bread is not very good IMO.
I do have a list of things I miss about AZ, but when I ask myself if I want to go back, my answer is always NO!!!
That’s pretty wonderful!
I’m sorry about your friend, I hope she starts feeling better soon.
That sounds just delightful!
So, I had to post and run because Mom was calling. She was worried about our storm damage. I think I should fly out and see her soon. Now she’s making me sigh.
Hubs has ordered some cams for the back yard. Not because of the ever constant paranoia he had in AZ, but because of the SFS and bats. I think he’s been checking the SFS nest box cam more than me!
I’m so happy about his comfort levels here. He puts outgoing mail in our mailbox instead of taking it to the post office. There are no cams in the front yard, no ring bell on the door.
What a wonderful outfit and I just love the mask!!!
Was in the 80s today, but I slept most of the afternoon instead of going outside to enjoy the weather.
The black cat has been hanging around the house. I may have to buy some food for it. I’d like to know if it belongs to anybody. I’m a little afraid for it, it runs across my driveway in front of me. It also shows a bit of interest when I open the garage door and the last thing I need is for it to run into the garage.
Nothing much else goes on around here. Everything is nice and boring right now.
Although the ToDo List is always looming over my head. My son is not going to be happy when I pull it out tomorrow and say we are going to start at the top and keep going.
Late Night Final report. Had my first trick or treater at 6:02pm. At 6:05pm it began raining hard and has rained on and off since then. In the past I could count on 30-40 kids, tonight I got 5 more after that initial one and they were being transported by car door-to-door. Just shut off all the exterior lights at 9pm, and if anyone needs some extra candy, just let me know…
Cookie, read your bread description and began to do my Pavlov’s dog interpretation.
nellieyou should drink water, maybe some soda, something light.
Sticky Buns, two broken legs will depress most anyone; I’m sure your visit did her good.
doggio, I remember watching Johnny Quest as a kid and the ‘reveal’ of the Invisible Monster was the scariest thing in the world to 11 year old me. Still a little creeped out by the photo you put up…
lily, great mask, looks like you’re ready for Día de Los Muertos.
Sari, how do the dogs feel about the intruder? Good luck with the to-do list.
May be off to bed early tonight, feeling a little weary. Have two soccer games to referee tomorrow evening (5:30pm and 7:00pm) and want to be ready for them. Have a good evening all.
Rodent, I have plenty of excess of my own, since DH reported ZERO T&Ters (typical in this complex, sadly). I’ll probably be taking the majority to irk with me tomorrow. DH is diabetic, I have an A1C in the pre-diabetic range, we really don’t need to keep it all, and there are plenty of people at irk who will be happy to help disappear it.
Fair warning: I may not even be able to read the MMP between Sunday morning and possibly Wednesday evening, let alone post. I think I mentioned upthread that I’m currently on a temp gig with the county elections department (it’s phone work, but much less unpleasant than most such jobs I’ve had). I’ll be working 8am-8pm both Sunday and Monday, then 6:45am - God only knows how late on Tuesday. Once the phones shut down on those three days, I shift over to the warehouse to help sort out incoming ballots (pre-printed, printed on site, conditional registration votes) and possibly other tasks on the “as needed” plan. Nice paychecks, and I’ve been assured that overtime crews also get fed (we had Costco pizza tonight, which is always fine with me), but my family won’t be seeing much of me for a few days. A certain Siamese princess will have to accept having supper served by DH those evenings unless she wants to be eating around 8:30pm (they do have free-feed kibble).
I do hope we can sort out the male household members’ fondness for disrupting my ability to sleep. I seem to be having more difficulty with that than usual without their input, and this morning was the worst yet. Alarm goes off at 6. I was up before 4, “thanks” to DH snoring and Buddy throwing a howling tantrum about wanting OUT. I dearly love everyone I share living space with, but by the time I left this morning, about the only one I actually LIKED was Allie. Even Misty decided to be annoyingly noisy. I will get over it, especially once I get some useful sleep. Took one Advil PM, along with a dose of chamomile and a 1mg melatonin (more gives me nightmares).
She is fun! I think I forgot to mention how much I liked your peas. Thank you for sharing pictures of your art.
@susan I think the mask is beautiful. And the shirt reminds me of the Camino path, which is known as St. Jakob’s Weg in Switzerland and uses the same shell pattern.
Had a busy week at work. To add to the fun, on Wednesday I fell backwards off of an exercise ball and slammed and slightly injured my tailbone. Worst part is I slammed my shoulder into the edge of a power plate platform. Which hurt. Did do it in front of the owner of the place, so I got a complementary consultation with a physical therapist. Because of that, I woke up the next day with very little pain.
However, this morning I opened the drapes to find somebody threw 2 eggs at our living room. Not happy. Have to clean up the egg stuff - at least it’s not too high up.
When it’s brighter, I’ll take pictures and inform the neighbors.
Oh, and today’s a holiday here. So no work.
ETA. Went outside and neighbors were also outside. They got a got more eggs than we did. And they heard it happen last night.
Morning, mumpers! It’s currently 10c/49f with a predicted high of 13c/56f and cloudy. Weather app is short and to the point - “No fucking sun for you!” Obviously not, since it’s overcast out there today.
Now it’s 12hrs later, I hope you’re feeling a bit better now. Shame about Ms Dog, and her person as well. I hope everyone’s on the mend.
Very wise, especially since “official” should be taken with many grains of salt. Do what’s best for you instead. Hope you feel better soon.
You didn’t borrow some of those “No snow” signs from swampy?
I’m sorry to hear about your friend’s broken bones, but I hope you cheered her up with your visit. I’d be smiling like a loon with a pasta princess for company!
I know, so far I’ve booked two gym sessions and an eye test!
How very uncivilised! Sorry to hear that, and also for your neighbours too.
I’m pleased to say that the Travel Gods were smiling on me this morning but that probably means they’ll do the complete opposite when it’s time to go home. I got to campus in good time, and have to deal with some fallout from an incident yesterday. We had some class tests going on and one student has some very special need so was in a separate room with an invigilator in a different building to ours. I was in a meeting with the ADHD Squirrel at the time too.
The fire alarm went off in the other building, the invigilator emailed to ask a couple of things, mainly about extending the room booking past 4pm. Sadly my newbie read it and did nothing, didn’t even mention it to the other two people in the office, and didn’t message me or come to find me. I wasn’t aware of it until half an hour later when I came back to the office, just before 4pm. Anyway, I booked the room out for another hour and it seems that everything got sorted out in the end, but now I have to have a Serious Conversation with the newbie about it.
Other than that, I’ve got a reasonably quiet day, I hope! And 'im indoors should be on a train to Scotland by 11.30am, so I will be going home to an empty-ish house. Just me and the mogs for the weekend.
I haven’t got much planned, our local football team has a home game tomorrow with a 5.30pm kick-off so that means town will be full of footie fans all afternoon. I have to go into town for my eye test and a couple of errands but will be making a speedy exit as quickly as possible. That kind of crowd is one I can do without. I’ve booked an appointment for someone to come and measure up for some made-to-measure curtains for the living room, and I might also get a quote for some blackout curtains for the bedroom, and some new curtains for the big landing window. Currently that window has a pair of door curtains that my mum gave me when she moved into her flat, so they’re at least 15 years old and have some water damage. I might consider blinds for that window instead. We’ll see what the curtain man has to say when he comes on the 11th.
Good Mornin‘Y’all! Up and caffeinatin’. YAWN ‘Tis 61 Amurrkin out and clear with a predicted high of 83 and N.O.S. High RDOS inactivities are the plan of the day. Long John Silver’s will provide N.O.L. and today’s main need to feed. OYKW will go pick it up which means I don’t have to put real clothes on at all today. YAY!
Now I need more caffeine and to feed rumbly tummy. Then onward into the day! Rah.
This is batter bread, so it doesn’t require kneading, just thorough mixing of ingredients.
4 ¼ cups sifted flour
2 pkg. active dry yeast
2 TBSP sugar
2 TSP salt
1½ TBSP dried oregano leaves
½ cup plus 1 TBSP grated Parmesan cheese (or combine with Romano or Asiago)
2 cups warm water (110 deg.F)
2 TBSP softened butter
In a mixing bowl, place three cups of the flour. Add salt, yeast*, sugar, and oregano and mix on low speed or by hand until blended. Add the water and softened butter to the dry ingredients and mix thoroughly. Add the ½ cup of Parmesan cheese. Continue beating for 2 minutes until the batter is smooth. Add the rest of the flour gradually, either beating in by hand or with mixer at low speed. The batter should not be too wet. If it is, add a bit more sifted flour, or you’ll end up with a dense product.
Cover the bowl and let rise in warm place for about 45 minutes until double in bulk. Preheat the oven to 375 F. Beat the dough down for about 30 seconds, then transfer to a well-greased 2-quart casserole dish.
Sprinkle the remaining TBSP of cheese over the top of the bread and bake for about 45 minutes or until nicely browned. Turn out immediately onto a wire rack.
*Alternatively, activate the yeast separately in warm water with some sugar, and then add
