FWIW, whoppers are a Hershey’s product. They are sorta obscure, not many places have them in their candy display but when you find them, they are fun. Crunchy malted milk center balls covered in chocolate. They may be a midwestern thing.
So TGoL had Shaggy sent to Surepost, to be Scooter’s problem, and Panamanian Vince was back, so it went well today. Apart from it being cold. I did my Senior Day shopping.
I did have to break into a girlfriend’s house once, after the grandkids locked her out.
I’d be suprised if there wasn’t
I knda do.
After a pandemic, and 30 years of retail, I have great symapthy and understanding for the characters that sell out humanity in alien invasion movies.
They’re available hereabouts also. MetalMouse seems to live a sheltered existence. And FWIW, we always called them malty balls.
Tomorrow is FCD’s b-day, and on Sat, we’re taking him to Texas Roadhouse to celebrate. If SIL’s workday starts later, we’ll do lunch there. Otherwise, probably supper. Waiting to hear back from Daughter.
Nah, we had 'em in Texas. I only saw them around Halloween, though, in those mixed bags of tiny (“fun sized!”) candies.
So during the big Halloween storm (which also ruined my plans to paint whiskers on my face!) a mulberry tree in the backyard became … uh, no longer a tree. About three quarters of it is on the grass, and what scares me is that if those branches had fallen a few feet (a couple of degrees, in a circle) over, it would have landed on the roof, and an already day would have gotten so much worse.
I just submitted a maintenance request with pics.
I imagine they’ll cut the whole thing down. There’s little of it left.
Cat Glove, I wish Hubs and you all the best in the weeks and months to come. As I always advise people taking care of a sick loved one, don’t forget to take care of yourself too!
Shoe, glad you got your power back. In SF, we’d lose power just about every time the wind got up to 20 mph, which was often. Where we live now, the lines are all buried, and they tell us we’re on the same grid as the Vegas Strip, so there’s a lot of incentive to keep the electrons flowing. Not sure how true that is, but it’s been almost 9 months and so far so good.
Had a fairly lazy day yesterday after traveling Tuesday. Did a bit of laundry and finished submitting my hours and expenses for the week. We did take a nice long walk around the neighborhood - temps in the 70s! - and I ended up with almost 14,000 steps for the day. I’m still below my yearly average goal of 11,000 per day, since I didn’t put in a lot of walking in Arkansas (except that one day). Most of the work required standing in one spot for a while, then moving to another spot to stand for another while. But it still tired me out enough that I didn’t feel like getting the steps in the evening. So I’ll try to push my average back up to 11,000 by the end of the year. We’ll see.
Good news bad news on the leg front. Good news is the x rays showed no break. Bad news it may the collateral ligament which only an MRI can show. I’ll have the MRI next week (insurance checking etc). In the meantime I am on one crutch with instructions to rest
I’ve been dragging my feet here on the tail end of my mid-life crisis and things are getting down to the short strokes, money wise. I’ve got to find a cheaper place to live and to that end, I have to find a job so applications don’t get shot down.
So, the good news is, after a successful Zoom meeting yesterday, I’ve been invited for a face to face meeting with the hiring manager next week for the position of Canine Coach. Basically, doggie day care attendant. It doesn’t pay a whole bunch, but about as much as I was making in the warehouse at Beans. The job entails playing with dogs all day. And cleaning up after them, and feeding them, and medicating them and stuff like that, but hell’s bells … my job will be playing with dogs all day and Bob can come to work with me. Win - win.
If that all falls through I can start at the Fed-Ex warehouse pretty much whenever I want.
We left early so I could go thru the car wash before meeting Roxy’s bus. Except when we got there, one car was being washed and 3 were in line. So my car is still filthy. Dammit. Maybe on the way home?
Speaking of my car, it’s been doing disturbing things. Twice within a week, it acted like the battery was dead tho it eventually turned over and started, most recently today. And today, as I was backing down the driveway, it was running rough and the ABS light came on. So I pulled back to the garage, shut it off, then started it again, and it was fine.
Worrisome. I think I need to have Paul look at it before I spend $800 on new tires. If the car is in its death throes, I have some tough decisions to make.
We’ve already decided that once I’m done caring for the kids, when my car dies, it won’t be replaced. We can get along fine with one car and the pickup. But I need the car to last till June. So we’ll see what Paul has to say.
The gutter guy came by. He says it will be $1,100, and that he can install the gutters Saturday. Mrs. L.A. had previously called Leaf Filter. They’ve been calling four to six times a day. Today she answered the phone and told them we’ve found someone else.
Went and got our RSV shots today. Managed to get lost on the way, but figured it out in time. If someone offers you the RSV, should you RSVP? Asking for a friend.
Leftover kebab and rice for dinner. I think some popcorn later this evening.
I’m back in Seattle. I was able to get answers from the ortho doc, so yay for that. The big bump on my knee is bursitis. He said about 1 in 5 knee replacement patients get it. It’s from all the cutting, etc. they did during surgery, and aside from elevating it, there’s nothing to do but wait for it to go down on its own. He was VERY happy with the flex and extend of the knee, predicted they’ll kick me out of PT soon because I’m basically there, and said I was excellent, and that he’s proud of me.
The poor Uber driver. After the itch shots, I summoned an Uber, and a few minutes later realized it was sending the car to a cigar store a mile away! I texted the driver, but I gave him the wrong address (Right number, wrong street.) Ugh. Poor guy. He said the cigar store was closed and dark and empty. Because I sent him two miles the wrong way, I gave him a very generous tip.
It rained and rained last night, but right now it’s sunny and very windy, the kind of weather that has me longing to get outside. However, I’m waiting for the electrician or someone like him. (Any Firesign Theatre fans here?)
My son-in-law and I LOVE malted milk balls. Once we had the triple-dipped kind, Whoppers didn’t quite cut it any more, so don’t let those kids know there’s such a thing as triple-dipped.
Cupcake, so glad Mauser is on the mend!
I was thinking more of the doomed Scott expedition but like yours better.
Shoe, yay for the power coming back on! And we love you even though you don’t like pickles.
Once when we lost power during a June blizzard ('Twas Wyoming, after all.), I took the kids to BK, which had power. They had to talk me out of asking the manager if I could stick my feet in the fry warmer.
FCM, I’m sorry about FCD’s brother. I hope it’s a peaceful passing. And I’m sorry about the drama at your daughter’s school. I hope things settle down soon. Your daughter doesn’t need any more tempests in that particular teapot.
What are you going to do with all those adorable crocheted animals? (Sorry if you’ve already said and I missed it.)
Pilot, thank you for your kind words. It helps that part of me refused to leave childhood.
Whoops. Electrician just pulled up. More later, I hope.
Afternoon all. I checked the Kroger site and yes, Whoppers! are available in North Ali-bama. Just never have been on my radar. Might try a package sometime, but still coming down from the last couple of week’s chocolate high, so don’t want it to become a habit.
Went to the gym and didn’t realize until I had disrobed that I forgot my t-shirt for sweating in, so ended up with 35 minutes in the sauna to work up a sweat I could shower off. Will rely on the kids tonight to get me some exercise.
FCM, a happy early birthday to FCD. And good idea getting the car checked out, might be the starter or alternator (in truth I know nothing about cars, but those two things tend to be blamed when cars don’t work right, so I’m running with it… )
wet one, glad there is no break, hope the healing goes well.
J-Bats, sounds like a job that was made for you. They just opened a Dogtopia near me, wonder if they need an old guy to take care of old dogs…
flyboy, I’m still getting promo stuff from Champion Windows 4 YEARS after I choose another company to replace them, so I feel your annoyance…least they don’t call.
Nellie, good news on the knee progress, I thought UBER had some sort of GPS system to locate you?
OK, my laundry load for the day is done, so need to transfer it to the dryer. Take care all.
Whoppers are great. The fact they come in a milk carton-like container makes them kinda invisible in the candy aisle. You just don’t expect to see that container and you eye just jumps past it. Or at least mine does.
The electrician came. I swear I tried to flip the breaker to the Off position, and it didn’t work. He flipped it off, flipped it on, and abracadabra! it was fine. I felt schtupid, so instead of the company sending my son and DIL the bill, I paid it. After all, if I’d done it right, there’d have been no need for an electrician. The bill was well into YIPES! territory. My son insists he’s going to pay me back, and I’m insisting he not, so it’s a war of wills. Stay tuned.
They do, but it’s a wonky system. If I’m on the east side of my apartment when I use the app, it locates me deep in the woods behind my building. Because who DOESN’T expect a car to drive into a densely forested area? If I stand outside on the west side of the building, it will send drivers to the complex across the street, even though it’s about two blocks from my door. (My building is at the far end of the complex.) I bet if I moved east a few blocks, it’d locate me at the White House.
Howdy Y’all! I did the things and we had N.O.L. at the hog trough GC. We still didn’t get shorn. Maybe tomorrow. Or sometime soon. Perhaps. Then we accomplished nappage and day drinkin’. Soon it will be time for Netflix and chill. We’re watchin’ Six Feet Under which is entertainin’ yet mildly disturbin’.
Nope. West coast resident my whole life and knew of them as a kid (like most kids, I learned a lot about candy varieties at Halloween). I like them.
It’s not at all unusual to see them in grocery stores, in a milk-carton-style cardboard container. A movie-theater-candy box is also not unusual. Quick checks of my usual grocery sources show Amazon, Walmart, and various supermarkets (via Instacart) all have them. Amazon even offers a two-pound bulk bag.
