(Old) Trying To Reason with Hurricane Season - A Hockey MMP

JtC how does one get kicked out of The Pit??? Did you not swear enough?

I’m waiting with bated breath for this.

Whew! Quite a morning/early afternoon. I swear, my neurologist makes me feel like I’m inconveniencing her. When I asked her about reducing my dosage or getting off the meds entirely, she asked why. Um, because I would rather not be taking pills I don’t need. So starting tonight, I do 50mg at night and 100 mg in the morning. Then in 3 months she wants me to get an EEG. So we’ll see.

I lunched at Cracker Barrel - grilled chicken salad and diet Coke. I even got a drink to go, and I had enough points to get my drink for free. We don’t go all that often, but I guess often enough for a small freebie.

Aldi didn’t have my preferred cereal, dammit, but I got most of the rest of the stuff I wanted there. Half a gallon of skim milk is now $1.91, up for about a buck anna half (can’t recall what I paid last week.) Then a quick (WOW!!) drive-thru at CVS for my sweetie’s meds followed by my Food Lion shop. All told, including the copay at the doc, it was a nearly $200 outing. Everything’s been unpacked and stowed.

The lilac I got from Lowe’s less than 2 months ago is dead. Dammit. So I’m going to get a refund and find something else to plant in its spot. I love lilacs and have had zero luck with them. Dammit.

Meatloaf is thawing for supper. Not sure what I’ll do now - it’s too warm to rake and, frankly, I donwanna. ATTITUDE CHECK!!!

Maybe I’ll think about sides for supper.

I’m a nag of the first order. Good news is that it’s back up. For how long is anyone’s guess. Spent some time after exercise explaining to other residents how the system works. Most of these folks don’t even understand how the thermostat works in their apartments (poorly, truth be told) and have even been told that broken ones can’t be replaced because they’re not made any longer. What bullshit. It’s a simple differential stat. It wouldn’t work with newer electronic ones that require signal wiring and the like, but another simple version would work just fine, it would seem. Supposed to hit 85 today, so I’m just glad it’s running.

Looks like some rain in the near future, which is good.

It’s been a rainy day. I have a puppy pile going on again. Even Pugsly, Nelson’s shy brother/ cousin has joined in. That’s about the most exciting thing that’s happened today.

Both suddenly and finally, The Day is nigh: the movers will be here sometime between 8-9am tomorrow, and will start packing me up!

I worked from home for a few hours this morning, using my work cell phone as a hotspot because Verizon had turned my FiOS off sometime in the wee small hours – as planned. I took my router and met a tech at the new house at around 3pm, and soon the new place had connectivity. I’d been hoping to put the router in my home office (top floor) and use an extender to get wifi in the TV room (basement), because I like having my work laptop hard-wired for Teams meetings, but I had to work with existing connections/outlets: I wound up putting the router on the main floor, in the kitchen. The wifi signal seems to be plenty strong both upstairs and downstairs; we’ll see what happens once all of my stuff is connected. If I find that the wifi isn’t good enough for work, the tech said that if I upgrade my router I can get a wireless extender (which just needs a power outlet, vs a wired extender that also needs an active coax jack and a cable). Might be worth it, if I wind up needing it.

I did some other stuff at the new house while I was there – assembled two kitchen stools, put up a shower curtain in the hall bathroom, etc. I also moved the contents of my fridge/freezer and pantry. There are other things I’ll be moving myself; I’ll pack them in my car sometime before I go to bed. I also still need to disconnect all of my electronics, finish taking pictures off the walls, etc. I’ve been back at my current house for a couple of hours, and – while I eat some dinner and take a break before doing more stuff – I’m using my personal phone as a hotspot for my MacBook (which I’m typing on) and my work phone as a hotspot for my iPad Pro (which I’m watching old episodes of Elementary on).

I haven’t moved in 12 years, and had forgotten just how ridiculously stressful it is. I love the new place, though; it’ll be worth it. The final cleaning at my current place will be a week from Friday, I’ll haul the biiiiiig trash can to the curb one last time a week after that, and I’m waiting for my lawn company to let me know what day they can come clean the gutters (as required by my lease): after those three things, I’ll be able to schedule my move-out inspection. I’m not worried about anything at this place, but I’ll be relieved when I’m free and clear of it.

I’d been hoping to return to my interactive ways this week, but apparently my brain won’t function properly until after the move. :joy: I’m reading, though, and keepin’ tabs on y’all!

Howdy Y’all! We accomplished all the things today. Go Us! Plus we had a good lunch at the not frequently visited Mexican place. We should go there more often, but it’s a bit more of a drive than to the one we usually go to which is also really good and our favorite. OYKW had a hyuuuge margarita and I had a smaller one as I was the driver. I made up for that later by quaffin’ two gin ‘n tonics out beside the cee-mint pond. I felt a touch of malaria and scurvy comin’ on and thus needed to medicate. Oh and nappage also took place lest y’all think we slacked on that. There’s a cooler and dryer than usual air mass hangin’ around which really makes bein’ outside pleasant. Makes for some good quality cee-mint pond time.

MOOOOOOM glad the doc agreed to a lower dosage. Hope it works.

Cookie that’s ridiculous about the a/c. Good for you for talkin’ to the other residents about it.

MetalMouse I believe it was you that asked about the Lutherans Mollie spoke of hangin’ out with. There are several flavors of Luterun, but the big two are the ELCA and the LCMS. The ELCA is, I am guessin’, is the one Mollie mentioned. The LCMS is probably the one your brother and sil attend. I am most familiar with the ELCA as that’s the group that has been a part of my church for the past twelve years. The ELCA and The Episcopal Church have a concordant that says we can share Rectors/Pastors and are in full Communion with each other. The LCMS is a much more conservative church. Here endeth the lesson.

You are so very lucky we don’t have any newspaper handy!

But yeah, the stitches are to repair the damage the stitching caused.

Is she less troublesome when she’s not telling you why she’s in a snit? She sounds exhausting.

I was thrilled when my prescription became simple enough to shop at Zenni. I bought two pair for less than what I used to spend after insurance for one pair. AND they are cute

I’m not a big fan of their food, but at least the service was always decent when we ate there. FIL loved hamburgers and Black Bear did do decent hamburgers.

All of the big carnivores in WV died off when they clear cut the forests so the deer have no natural predators anymore. Hunters are the only reason we don’t have deer starving to death every winter. Someone’s gotta cull the herd. (Of course, trump fucked that up too by shutting down most of the game inspection stations and bovine wasting disease is a real threat to humans.)

I could easily survive the rest of my life without ice cream, a life without cheese wouldn’t be worth living. IMHO.

Those are some cute little babies! I’d have stopped to watch as well.

We as a society need to bring back some of the old customs. The french did know how to treat despots.

Not entertaining enough. It wasn’t a board decision, it was a junior mod complaining that nobody wanted to hear about my boring first world problems, I should go away and post in the MMP instead. So I did and never looked back.

You shouldn’t have to deal with this sort of thing. Bastids.

Moving sucks. Doesn’t matter how much you love your new place, the actual process just sucks. I’ll be happy for you when it is finally over.

So much excitement is happening here, the across the street neighbor has a crew out tearing up their driveway and there are strange vehicles in our driveway. That didn’t bother the fuzzbutts until they learned that the neighbors would be driving their quads down the mountain and into our yard. I don’t know why they object to that so much, but cats.

Yes, GO you! All of your daily goals were met, sometimes that’s hard to do.

Hello, hello. A lovely 66F day here with a skiff of rain but mostly just cloud cover. Ollie be chonking away on a Kong with a treat firmly stuffed inside. This will, if I’m lucky, bring an hour of peace.

It sounds weird, but the banana flavor is very subtle. The cookies are moist but still have a nice bite with all the other stuff in them. They’ve become a favorite to keep on hand.

taters, I was never a Black Bear fan, either. But I shouldn’t really offer an opinion since I haven’t been to one in more than a decade.

This, exactly. I once came across a starved-out deer herd. Made me a supporter of responsible hunting instantly and forever.

Good luck with the food adjustments, cookie.

doggio, the Canadian cobra chicken parade is cute, if a bit intimidating! Thanks for sharing the pics. Did you hiss back?

Add me to the list of The Curious!

Hope the move goes smoothly, oopsie! The place sounds great. And agreed, moving is always is very stressful. I’m not sure I have another one in me.

swampy, thank goodness you had the presence of mind to avoid that impending bout of malaria and scurvy – a close call! You’ve undoubtedly avoided weeks of illness.

Tsk. What a party pooper.

This was a day of Best Intentions with very little follow through. I did get started on one chore that’s been nagging at me, though it’s not finished. But at least it’s started. I haven’t felt quite up to scratch today, so I was happy for an uneventful day. I’ll have to make up for it tomorrow.

One good thing I did get done is to finally find the little wooden buttons cabinet makers use to hide the hardware the holds a piece together. I have a wonderful butcher block that is the anchor piece in my kitchen. It has had about 10 of those buttons. Sometimes when there is a significant temperature change in the house from warmer to cooler, a button will pop out of its assigned duty station. I heard one go the other night and made a mental note to push it back in place when I next went into the kitchen. And then promptly forgot to do that.

Unfortunately, the Lord of All Things on the Floor immediately found it and chewed it in half before he figured out it wasn’t close enough to food for consumption.

I had already lost another one a few years ago, so I’ve been looking for replacements. Never found any until today. Cost to replace the buttons: 20 ea. for $3.25. Cost to ship: $8.95. Worth it. I hope I got the right size. I did measure! Twice.

Have enjoyable evenings, all!

And a good early evening to all. Shopping and gym were both accomplished successfully, Dinner is being ingested as I type (well, TBH, between types…). Nothing else is planned for the remainder of the evening, may watch some of the basketball later but we’ll see. Weather remains gorgeous, about 78F now and no rain clouds in sight.

FCM, only guess I have is that the neurologist was asking thinking that you were having some reaction to the pills, but at least you got what you asked for.

Cookie , am less and less thrilled by that place your at; keep up the good fight.

red , puppy piles are on my list of things I’d love to have done to me. Closest I came was having a full-grown English Mastiff thinking he was a lap-dog…

Oopsie, hang in there, moving day Will Not go according to plan, roll with it and it’ll get done. Haven’t moved myself since I got back from overseas in 2003 but the day will come that I’ll be looking for an apartment ala Cookie for my elder days, and already not looking forward to the hassle.

swampy, your always so good about taking your medicine…  And yeah, I think the Luther-ands have three major ‘synods’, and whatever is the most conservative is the one they belong too.

JtC, we don’t have the Black Bear restaurants, there is a Black Bear Brewery not far away from me, I do have to try them one of these days. And while that Mod was a bit presumptuous, we do owe them the favor of them sending you to us.

Bright Tree, enjoy the cookies. Glad you found the buttons your needed.

And onward into the evening.

Big doings at casa Paint tomorrow. Starting a new roof on the garage and getting the septic tank pumped. I’m a bit stressed out by the whole situation. The roof guy asked if I could get rid of the trees that overhang the garage, couldn’t get to that until today, after a full day of moving wheelbarrow upon wheelbarrow of mulch for the science park. I’m whooped, and there are still 3 felled trees in the back yard I need to deal with. Fortunately the town has a place to drop off yard waste that is about 1/4 mile from my house. Unfortunately, I no longer own a truck.

Considering what you have shared about your diet and eating preferences, that is a shame. I think you would really like Black Bear fud. Besides good burgers, it is all comfort food and is very predictable.

So most of the jack-hammering across the street is over, thank goodness. It was VERY noisy today, or maybe it wasn’t that noisy, maybe we just aren’t used to city noises anymore. The entire project is expected to take three weeks (I suspect they padded the estimate to cover their butts if the contractors have delays.) I really want to ask how much they are paying to do this (rip out old driveway and put in a heated one) but talking money isn’t done out here so I guess I’ll have to ask Harry instead.

I can’t see the activity from my desk, but Hubs has a good view and says that the workers are hustling. I suspect they want to get the concrete poured before it gets hot. They aren’t going to be fast enough, it will start heating up tomorrow.

We don’t really care, there is lots of room in our driveway for two more vehicles and as long as they are mindful of their parking not even the UPS driver will notice.

Speaking of UPS, TC friend wants me to ship her vase by UPS because she thinks they are more careful than the USPS. It would probably break her heart to hear some of doggio’s daily reports.

I know how to pack fragile things and I also know that her vase is a very common piece and I’ll be able to replace it if it gets broken…it will just take a while because that’s not something you can buy at Walmart, its gotta be a yard sale or antique shop.

I can remember buying them at the local hardware store, times they are a’changing. Are you going to need to stain them?

We lose small things if they are left on the floor as well. Not because they get eaten but because they go under the fridge no matter where they have been dropped. Every six months or so, I’ll pull the fridge out to dust and sweep. I am always horrified by all of the stuff I find under there, rotten cats!

I like that I’m back on part-time glasses use. The only issue is that I’m having to relearn to use progressive lenses.

Yeah, it’s weird. The staff here, in general, is excellent. They don’t skimp on personnel hires like many of these places, and it doesn’t have that “warehousing the dying” feel to it at all. But they have a blind spot when it comes to maintaining the facility, mainly because they don’t really understand what it takes to keep it running or what kind of person they should be hiring. The present building administrator tends to hire the first person who walks through the door; for instance, we’re on the third chef since he took over because the first two were complete duds. Food and comfort should be their primary concern, ya know?

Happy Wednesday! I’m waiting for the dryer to finish tumbling.

My son said he hasn’t heard from the imaging place to schedule his x-ray. I HATE the way medicine is managed these days: “We’ll refer you, and they’ll call when they get around to it.” He first developed asthma at eight months old, I think partly from heredity, partly from bronchitis and pneumonia, and partly from his father’s smoking (a battle I fought long and hard and only intermittently successfully). There were many ER trips, including the one that landed him in the ICU. I try not to worry, but he’s got scarred-up bronchial tubes, and it’s hard to stay serene when he’s been sick so long.

Oh, no, no, red. I’m not against hunting. Did I sound like I am? I lived long in Wyoming and Montana and learned about preventing overpopulation and the other benefits. Preventing overpopulation of ducks isn’t the primary reason hunting is allowed at Nisqually, though. It’s that the fees and the sale of stamps help fund the refuge.

Even understanding the reasons for allowing hunting, the term refuge still strikes me as ironic, considering the definition of the word. It’s a language thing, not a moral stance. Hope this clears that up.

Cookie, what do you like best in a salad? Do you make your own dressing?

Doggio, thanks again for explaining. Also, GOOSES!

Molly and doggio, I had to laugh at headbangers yoga.

I love them, too, and miss them. Aren’t they hard to grow in areas with hot summers and mild winters? My cousin in LA tried and failed to grow one, and I think that’s what she said. Maybe there’s a variety bred for heat tolerance? You have such a green thumb, if you v=can’t grow one, nobody can.

That’s so adorable! I love the way puppies will pile on each other and suddenly plop! they’re asleep.

The idea of slacking on nappage made me smile.

Our first winter in northern Montana was a hard one, and north of town, a large herd of deer were starving. Hunting them was the kindest option. My ex was a crack shot, but he had no gun then, and there were plenty of volunteers.

Agreed. I’m glad we only have benign curmudgeons up here.

Up from naptime. Having a martini, cheese tortellini with meatballs, and spinach with basil and tomatoes.

I’d like a day like that.

It’s been 17 since I last moved. It would be stressful to rearrange everything in a new floor plan, even if everything went 100% smoothly.

Indeed.

Me: “HONK!”
Goose: “Your hovercraft is full of eels?”

Lots of packing and tape, and the minimum size box that will fit the vase. That will maximize the chance it gets through.

Getting near 10pm so just a late-night final. Have done nothing constructive since my previous report except watch You Tube videos and eat an apple for dessert. Also filed a report with Amazon, was supposed to get a package yesterday that they claim was delivered but didn’t show up so we’ll see how long the replacement takes.

Van Go, hope you get a good night’s rest, sounds like you earned it.

JtC, hope things quiet down, jack-hammers are never fun, and I should know, some of the plumbing work in the past years needed jackhammering to get to the pipes buried in the slab concrete, which I hope the rerouting has solved. Good luck on the shipping/packaging.

nellie, best wishes for your son and {{hugs}} to you. I’ve been pretty lucky with my timing and referrals, but then again I haven’t had the long-standing issues your son is afflicted with.

And heading off to slumberland. Catch y’all tomorrow.

Busy day. The guy who was hired a week after I was, stopped working there (I don’t know whose choice) weeks (more than a month?) ago. So the ‘senior’ Member Service Representative (‘teller’) has been filling in; only she’s been out sick the last couple of days, so the manager is filling in. Today started early, 08:00 instead of 08:45, because we had a training session on the new authentication protocols (OTP) we’re implementing next week. I had a rush after lunch, and of course my computer was being balky. It took forever to print a receipt, and the signature pad wasn’t working. Had to do paper receipts, and have the members sign them with a pen, then scan them into the system. Oh, and there was an issue that needed a Financial Service Representative, but they were all either engaged or else out to lunch. Drive-up (where I went after the manager took her lunch at 14:00) was busy, and I had to help out in the lobby when I was able. And a guy in the #2 lane stuffed $1,831 into the pneumatic tube container. I had to count it (twice, using the bill counter) and do the deposit; and then, later, I had to count it by hand for my drawer.

Went to Chef’s Store after irk and bought a five pound block of Tillamook Medium Cheddar, a five-pound block (120 slices) of American cheese (pasteurised process American cheese, not ‘cheese food product’ or whatever), and a one-pound can of crab meat.

Don’t forget (WELS) about the Wisconsin Evangelical Lutheran Synod, even scarier rigid and conservative.

Hey, man. I’m just a Quaker who married into the Episcopal Church. I just show up where asked and know silent meetings are too wierd, even for me.
