(Old) Tying up loose ends in the MMP

Quite certain I was using a 2-cup Pyrex measuring cup for both parts, and a 1:1 ratio is correct for Instant Pot, since you’re not losing water to evaporation during the cooking process. My rice came out fine, there was just a good deal more of it than makes sense to me.

Howdy Y’all! We’ve been home from men’s night road trip for a little while now. A good crowd on hand and as usual we solved all the world’s problems but no one ever listens to us. One keeeyooote dawg named Scooter got his fill of steak from probably everyone.

Tomorrow mornin’ I will serve at a funeral for a long time church member. She had been ill for quite a while and was in hospice care. Still sad even though everyone knew it was just a matter of time.

JtC glad y’all experienced good quality care. That seems to be a rare thing these days.

Are you a pallbearer? Some older people have few relatives left to see them out. There was a lady at my folk’s church who had only one blood relative left and he couldn’t get there in time. She died the day before 9/11 and the planes were all down.

A little slower today, We were wrapped up by 0630. I went home, showered and had breakfast. It was dreary and cold, so I was done in the dumps. Literally. I took some stuff down for disposal to the landfill, then did my Aldi run.

  • Cocktails
  • heaving
  • laundry
  • Spot eating my hand

So you’re say she has a comcept of a plan?
: d&r
But good luck to nellie on finding something.

{{{{JtC and Hubs}}}}

That would be so cool

Ditto

I love it! And the card is cute as well

My Secret got her package already and has made a nice happy post. (I always start second guessing myself as soon as I hand the box over the the post office.) Hawaii is 5 hours behind us so I doubted the USPS tracking thing when it said it would get there by 2100 today. I sent my mother in Idaho a similar package at the same time and for about the same money. That one is stuck in CO for some reason.

This is why I refuse to give the post office extra money in the hopes that things will be delivered when promised. They often aren’t and you can’t get any money back for postage and have to provide receipts to get reimbursed for lost items.

Go you! I always forget that sort of stuff which is sad. It is very important.

I gotta ask, though. How did you end up with 7 loads of laundry as a single person? That’s a lot of clothes for just one closet!

One of the many reasons that man is going to end up at the bottom of a mine shaft is because he told his medical team that I can’t drive after dark.

I’ve seen him after a heart cath before, I knew he would be able to drive when he was released but they were required to restrict him from driving for 24 hours after waking up from sedation. The restrictions are normal and we knew about them going in. My plan was to just be there when he was released and drive to the Gino’s a mile away for dinner and more time for him to recover.

Once he opened his mouth, those plans were trashed and he ended up waiting over an hour for the taxi to arrive and paid twice as much as he should have just because they didn’t have change or take plastic and all I had was a fifty.

The poor man was starving when he finally got home. I had taken him a burger while he was in recovery, but he just nibbled because he didn’t want to have to poop in a bedpan. He gave GG a head rub, picked Jolene up for brief cuddles and then went to the stove for a bowl of stew.

When he had open heart surgery, they sent him home with a few pages of instructions and told me that I needed to take some PTO to take care of him. Getting the FEMA paperwork filled out took much more time than it should have.

Today a nurse called me and went over them and gave me her cell number in case I had any questions or problems later. I really do hope to get the same quality of care when he gets his stents.

That just sucks for all of you. It used to be that renting was cheaper than buying, but those days are long gone.

We got out of our old place just in time. The unimproved land at the end of our street was bought by a developer to put in rental units and RV lots. When a home is built for sale, it must have a guaranteed water supply. When they are built for rentals, they don’t have to prove that, but they can still use the same groundwater that the homeowners depend on.

The drought is real, TC friend’s water bill is now two hundred a month and her trees are dying. My garden and trees would have required probably closer to 400 a month in the summer.

The smoke shop by the Junction has been held up so often that they went out of business and the guy who took care of the little community park half a block away was almost beaten to death by some of the party of law and order. Apparently he told them that the park closed at sundown and they took exception to his request because their free speech rights were being denied.

Things are much more civil out here. My “JD Vance puts his cast iron skillet in the dishwasher” sign didn’t cause any problems at all. I certainly wouldn’t have risked it back in AZ, I liked having unbroken windows.

@purplehorseshoe I have taken your advice and have been pretty much ignoring my lemon tree. You are wise in the way of trees. I just spent some time looking it over and there are new leaves and maybe little branches or thorns sprouting all over it. I am seriously happy about this, if I had known how easy it was I would have gotten one years ago.

Most plants don’t need to be fussed over every day, or even every week.
Some of them will give you the side-eye if you so much as look at them every month. Depends on the species.

I saw a post a while ago from someone who was having the worst luck propagating succulents.

Then she mentioned going into an unused guest room that she hadn’t walked into for months, finding some forgotten petals in a soil-filled dish on the window … that had sprouted roots & were growing like gangbusters!

{{{JtC & Hubs}}} I’m glad today’s procedure went well enough that Hubs was able to come home and that the medical personnel allayed your fears. Did they give you any time frame for when the stent procedure would be scheduled? Keeping you and your Hubs in my prayers.

Loose ends - seems I’ll never get rid of the loose ends with Hubs medical issues. Today we saw the Stem Cell Transplant Dr and she reduced the dosage on the 2 steroids he’s taking. Last week he was taking 29 pills on M,W,F and 28 on the other days so this week it will be 26 on M,W,F and 25 on the other days. Needed 5 refills this week, one of which has to come from somewhere other than the hospital pharmacy. So, when I went down to the pharmacy, there were 4 scrips to pick up. When the young man brought them to the counter, I said, would you please bill us for them (because their card reader won’t accept our benefits card). But young man said “There’s no charge”. WHAT!!! Apparently Hubs hit the max on copays for the year. I don’t know what that amount is but I’m going to ask for more resupply before the 30th. Then he had his blood draw and after that we went to the hand specialist. After he had the cortisone shot in September, it took about 5 days before it kicked in then he hasn’t had any pain in his hand since and his thumb is no longer triggering. Although his hands cramp every night starting around 10pm. The Drs think it’s because of all the pills he’s taking; perhaps the steroids.

This Sunday will be the 9th anniversary of my Mom’s passing so I requested that a mass be said in her memory. Our daughter is going to come then after mass we’re going to go to brunch. I was looking for a new brunch place because the place that we really liked in October hosted a person that will be moving from Florida to Washington,DC on Jan 20 who will be living in a house that is white. So after the appointment with the hand specialist we went to a new place that is advertised as a Yemeni-American Brunch House. Hubs and I split Lahm Sigar which is minced beef sauteed in onions, peppers, garlic and Yemeni hiwaij. It’s served with sahawik and khuba. I asked for mild spice. It was delicious. So that’s where we’re going on Sunday. The Ashta & Pistachio pancakes look intriguing.

Loose ends include finishing addressing Christmas cards (we mailed 5 more today but there’s 3 more to do). And of course, wrapping presents and mailing a few. Then there’s the storage unit. Received an email today that they’re going to increase the rent again; 2nd time this year. I’m going to have to do something about clearing it out, the pricing is getting ridiculous.

Once home I swiffered the bedroom and the stairs to second floor, then stripped and remade the bed. After which I refilled 2 weeks worth of pills in the pill boxes. Dinner was knockwurst and potato & onion pierogi with peas & carrots & corn.

Holy cats, mine’s like 25 a quarter. I do live in an area where all the water goes back into the lake.

It was dark by the time I cleaned out the fridge and then took out the trash. Because I had to haul both trash and recyclables, I didn’t use a flashlight. (My vision is better except at night.) I therefore missed seeing a curb and fell. Luckily, I landed on the most maximus part of my gluteus. However, my “good” knee got twisted under me. Luckily, it’s just a little skinned up.

In my perfect world, all curbs would be painted with glow-in-the-dark paint.

A friend in Wyoming sent me an apartment listing. It’s in an older home and had such cool features, plus it’s half the rent I’m paying here. But…isolation from family (and everyone else), the political climate, the ACTUAL climate, having to drive 100 miles to a specialist…And it’d be sad to live there and not teach, but I don’t think I could handle all the awful changes to the high school since I left. My classroom doesn’t exist. :frowning: Old Flame would be happy, but my family would have me committed.

JtC, SO glad hub’s surgery went OK and that he’s home now. Fingers crossed on the stent surgery.

That’s so sweet.

That would be my mother-in-law tongues. They also tell me I should dust inside the china cabinet and iron my underwear. (My sister’s late MIL used to chastise her for not ironing my BIL’s undies…he wore jockey shorts.)

I retired as a renter, but now I have to go back to work, so same here, except I’m older than all you youngins.

Oopsie, I REALLY hope you get picked. That would be SO COOL!

I also loathed them. We had a principal who thought it’d be a swell idea. I was SO tempted to write, “I’m not a perfect teacher, and that’s OK, because I’m good enough, I’m smart enough, and doggone it, people like me.”

Morning, mumpers! It’s currently 7c/44f with a predicted high of 9c/48f and cloudy. Weather app agrees and just tells me it’s “Cloudy as fuck”. Yes, it’s true, I know 'cos I went outside earlier.

That’s a good place to be!

That’s good news for you, and for him. Definitely a relief to know he’s reasonably safe.

It’s good to know that people have the time to explain everything to you, especially when everything seems like such an important and serious procedure to you - it might be run of the mill to them, but it’s a massive thing for you both.

Appendages crossed for you!

I have to write those for my staff - I hate doing them too. How many ways are there to say that we’re all great at what we do and the world would stop turning without us?

Well, it is bin day! Mine got collected before I was even out of bed this morning

shoe nice little gift to yourself!

I’m sorry for the loss, I’m sure you will do a fine job for her.

Ouch! I hope you’re ok - rubbish collection is a dangerous business!

Yesterday was a busy day, I had a lot of bits and pieces to do, and also had to attend an hour-long training session on automating one of our processes via workflows and Power Automate. I kind of get the idea but one of my minions was messaging me during the meeting having a total meltdown about it. I’ll see her on campus tomorrow so I am sure she will be bending my ear about it all day.

After irk, I had some administrivia to deal with and also had to go round emptying all the bins in the house as today’s our last normal rubbish collection before hexmas. Next week it’s recycling so I needed to make sure the biiiiiiiig bin got filled up and hauled out to the kerb before I went to bed last night.

The binmen had already emptied it by the time I got up, so I went out and hauled it back to where it lives. That was enough proof that it was cool and cloudy out there. Now I’m having a cuppa while my hair dye does its thing, then I need to wash that off, dry my hair, and then I can get some breakfast. I also need to empty the litter tray in the bathroom because Cherry has left something very stinky in there.

Fun times, right?

Good Mornin’ Y’all! Up and caffeinatin’. YAWN ‘Tis 56 Amurrkin out and clear with a predicted high of 73 and mostly N.O.S. As I mentioned last night, I shall serve at a funeral this mornin’. CupCakes I will serve Chalice for sure and possibly be Crucifer. I am prepared to do both. Ruth was cremated, so no pallbearers. Today is also laundry day. I can hardly contain myself. OYKW will handle that while I funeralize. Sup shall be grilled poke chops, peas ‘n carrots, a spicy rice dish from a box (don’t judge!), and rolls.

Now I need more caffeine and to feed rumbly tummy. Then I suppose I should purtify to funeralize.

Happy Tuesday Y’all!

Good morning!

I’m a bit out of sorts today because I have to go to work 1/2 hour early because I’m leaving early for a dentist appointment… So, I’ll just say HI! And then I’ll catch up with y’all later.

I have to wonder how much of this is due to dealing with so many geriatrics. I feel like when the in-laws were in FL, they were treated like commodities to be processed and sent on. But here, there seems to be much more care and compassion and recognition that the patients are actually people. I dunno, maybe I’m viewing thru biased eyes.

That must be why I couldn’t keep a jade alive… dammit.

MIL said she used to iron FIL’s boxers back in the day. I’ve also heard of people ironing sheets. When I was a kid, my mom taught me to iron starting with handkerchiefs and pillow cases, tho once on my own, those things never got ironed again. Come to think of it, on the rare occasions I pull my iron out, I need to dust it before I use it. I don’t even iron my tablecloths any more.

I wish I had some magical advice about your living situation. If you lived near me, I’d let you crash at my place so you could have time to search and save up, even tho that automatically adds yet another move to the situation. Keeping my fingers crossed for you. :crossed_fingers:

We need a Mumper retirement village where we could all live reasonably and comfortably in our golden years. Of course, the likelihood that we could agree on a location is probably close to zip. But can you imagine??

In my last squadron in the Navy, apparently each pilot was “singularly responsible” for keeping the nation safe. That was the phrase that pays that year. FCD and I used it as a running joke for years.

I’ve got a reminder set for 8AM to call and reschedule FCD’s dermatologist appointment from this afternoon. He and SIL made plans to go look at some cars, (It’s SIL’s last day off till next Moanday) but that didn’t happen till after the doc’s office closed, so I’ll catch them when they open. Then we need to leave here a tad after 9 to meet with our money guy and settle BIL’s inheritance and get the checks for TX SIL, her son, and Daughter. Then we’ll transfer our share from her account to ours. After that, the only things left to do will be contacting SS and the folks paying out FIL’s pension bit to MIL, but we can’t do any of that till we get the death certificates.

While we’re with money guy, I recommended SIL go to a local car lot that seems to specialize in used SUVs. I saw a couple on line that might have promise, and it’s close to where he lives, so it’s an easy errand. And assuming he doesn’t find anything worth considering, once we’re done, he and FCD will head to Woodbridge, VA to look at a couple of vehicles he found on line. There’s no way on earth that they can afford a new vehicle that will be comfortable for all of them (recall that SIL is a big guy, plus there’s Trevor) so they’ve asked FCD to help them find a decent used one, especially after their last 2 fiascos in car shopping. It’d be great if they can resolve this today, but I’m not optimistic. We shall see.

I may or may not have to pick up the grands after school. Meanwhile, today’s high will be mid-60s, and by Sunday, the high will be low 30s. I dunno…

Anyway, Happy Tuesday!

Good morning.

It’s 42F, and a light rain is falling. We’ll have periods of rain throughout the day, with a daytime high temperature of 51F. An atmospheric river is moving in later today and overnight, so it will be pretty soggy tomorrow. And, of course, tomorrow is the day I must commute to Olympia for work. Ah well.

Paintcharge, fingers crossed on the museum job.

JtC, I’m so happy your husband received compassionate and good care! I hope the next part goes just as well.

Jeesh, Nellie! I’m glad you were not more seriously hurt.

I don’t have to write self-evaluations; I have to write up my quarterly accomplishments and submit them to my boss for quarterly “conversations,” culminating in the final performance appraisal at the end of the federal fiscal year. It’s much the same, I think. I hate writing them.

The new steam cleaner arrived yesterday, and of course, I had to test it out because my great room carpet was filthy, except for the portions I had cleaned before the old machine broke down on me. Holy schneikes! This machine does a fantastic job! The carpet is 21 years old and shows it, but it looks so much better than it has in a long time. I can’t wait to see what it does on the pile carpet versus the stupid Berber in the great room.I may go over the great room carpet again, but man, I was tired last night.

I worked all day, came downstairs, watched two shows, and ate dinner. I then unplugged the TV, and my husband helped move the TV console out into the middle of the room so I could properly clean behind it. I untangled all the cords, and we took the TV to the garage so we’re not tripping over it. I vacuumed the great room and then busted out the new steam cleaner. The area behind the TV looks brand new, but that’s because it never receives any traffic. By the time I was done steam cleaning the carpet, it was 9:35 p.m., and I was done. I had been up since before 3:00 a.m.

I work until 11:30 today and have a hair appointment at 12:30. The furnace people may or may not come out today for the service. They called me last night wanting to reschedule again, but said they’d call me around 8:00 this morning to let me know for sure. Their guys called out again. It makes one go, hmmmmm. They were supposed to come out last Friday.

The new TV is to be delivered sometime between 3:00 and 5:00. After my hair appointment, I need to go to the store to pick up ingredients to make something for tomorrow’s potluck. I have no idea what I’m going to make. I’m not really excited about it, but whatever.

Today is my SiL’s 40th birthday. My daughter turns 35 the first week of January. Where does the time go?!

My dad was in the U.S. Army when my parents were first married. My mom ironed everything, including his boxers. Back in those days (early sixties), fatigues were ironed.

I used to iron my jeans (remember the 80’s crease?), and my blouses. I rarely iron anything anymore; occasionally, I’ll bust it out to iron something that folds creases, like my Christmas tablecloth.

Okay, I need to get those dishes washed! Wishing you all a good day.

I don’t know why I slept at least 8 hours.
I’m impressed. Of course, weird dreams.
No precip today, about 40.

Back in my early Navy days when we wore Seafarers (essentially bell-bottom jeans) we had to iron them inside-out for some reason. And, of course, the chambray shirts needed to be ironed with spray starch. I do NOT miss those days.

I’m clean and clad and we need to leave in about half an hour. That gives me time to empty the dishwasher, not that it will take that long.

The current spam I keep getting on the email attached to our broadband account:

I found a few errors on your site.

Would you like me to send a screenshot of those error lists showing you 3 or 4 things that can help you improve your Google rankings?

May I show you the Number of error lists and the website No-obligation report for your site’s review?

This has to be the 8th or 9th message of its kind, tho the subject line varies. For this one, it’s “Yes…//” Um, OK. And, no, I don’t have a website of any flavor.

OK, off to put the clean dishes away.

Being quilters we spend a lot of time ironing. Sunflower has a large and a small iron on her cutting table and one in the bag with her traveling sewing machine. I had a small one with my sewing machine and a second small one in my travel bag. I am sure my daughter, who lives in our basement, has one also. This means we have six.

Good morning all. Up about 7am, have broken fast and done my morning internettin’, later on I need to get some cash from the bank (my total liquid assets right now are $1.62 in change) and pay my credit card bills a couple days early. Might have rain this afternoon and tomorrow, but the temperature will be in the 60’sF both days so that will help manage the heating bill.

What is this ironing thing and why do you need to do it to clothes? (life-long bachelor here).

FCM, hope they have good luck on the car search. My car buying time will be this coming May as I have a CD I put away several years ago for it coming due.

nellie, wish I had some better advice for you on apartments, but the ones down here are probably more costly than yours. And hope your owies aren’t too bad.

swampy, glad you will be there for your church member’s departure; I’ll probably go out quietly and with few if any in attendance, and that will be ok with me.

JtC, glad Hubs is home and I hope the level of care there stays at a high level. And your choice to move is looking better and better…

Cat Glove, that’s a lot of pills. Hope things settle down for Hubs soon or is this regimen likely to be long-term? Enjoy brunch.

VanGO, mine’s ususally bwtween $20-30 most months.

Boofae, good luck with minion meltdown.

Cherry: Well, so do you…

Taters, glad the steam cleaner works so well, will have to give them a look post-Xmas.

For me (when laundry day comes once a month), it’s polo shirts, then tee shirts, the undies, then sweatpants/sweatshirts, then blue jeans, then towels, and then sheets/pillowcases. The shirts are done separately because since going to the gym I go through a lot of them in a month.

Onward!

Glad to see I’m not the only one that dreads writing self evals. My company stretches the process out unfortunately so it almost seems to never end. One-on-ones with managers won’t happen until March. Goal setting for the year won’t be until May or June. “Mid year” check-ins will be around September, with the dreaded self evals due yet again in December. Corporate life…

That sounds like something that would be really neat to see! I hope you’re able to get in.

I personally will never buy another Nissan. Come to find out that their CVT transmissions are trash and they just never manage to actually improve them.

as i had about 4 unmentionables in the drawer… it was about 3 weeks worth of laundry. i go into the office every day, thankfully we can wear jeans now (thank you covid dress code) that adds things up a bit.

started off with mini washes of new items; 1 light, 1 dark. then 2 loads of regular dark, 2 loads of regular light, and 1 mini cat load. 5 of the loads i put on “heavy” wash which gives and extra rinse and takes 43 minutes; the new items went in “light” wash that takes 28 minutes.

good times. i haven’t unpacked the laundry as yet.

i use marshals/tjmaxx/ikea bags to take the laundry down to the laundry room. i have one of those really helpful separated hamper bags that i can use to carry the laundry around. none of those very dangerous laundry baskets here!
