Howdy Y’all! The funeral was well attended. The church was pretty full. I felt like I walked five miles back and forth at the Communion rail. Ruth had a lot of friends! I got back to da cave and achieved nappage. Then we day drank. Then sup got cooked and et. OYKW did all the laundry by himself and even put it all away. Thus he got excused from kitchen duty. I foresee Netflix, chill and popcorn in the near future.
I just downloaded the Meijers app last week.
I did not buy that much and I see I had 10,000 perks. This meant I got 10$ off.
So I went and got ( for free) a Penny Press Variety Puzzle book!
Now I’m thinking, man, I could’ve gotten shampoo or vitamins.
Ah, next time.
Just had some sage stuffing. I added a small amount of chicken broth but its not as great as I thought.
I am so happy for you, its great that some places haven’t been overcome by greedy rental businesses. It hasn’t been that way anywhere I’ve lived in decades.
Back in AZ, rooms were 800 a month while our mortgage on a three bedroom home was 650 a month. Renting a three bedroom home was around 2 grand a month. Apartments were slightly less and usually had water included in their rent, but often required renter’s insurance.
I had clients tell me on a daily basis that they couldn’t afford to save a down payment on a home because their rent was so high and they showed me the documents to prove it (ex-food stamp worker)
Of course homeownership does come with extra costs, a year’s insurance is about a month’s mortgage as are the taxes. If a pipe breaks, I can’t call the landlord, it’s on us.
Had we gotten a mortgage on our current home, it would have been around 1300 a month with a fixed rate. If we had been renting all those years, we wouldn’t have owned our last place out right, which is why we don’t have a mortgage to worry about now. The peace of mind is amazing.
Our water bill in AZ was never less than a hundred a month, but I wanted to look outside and see plants and bees and birds. If you want an oasis in the desert, you gotta pay for it. If we had gone with Hub’s landscaping ideas (three tons of river rock and a hummingbird feeder), it would have been much less.
I used to do a lot more laundry when Lucky cat was still alive. He had been declawed before showing up on our doorstep and went blind in his old age. I think he got a little senile as well but he started peeing on all of his bedding instead of using the litter box so everything in his small world got washed on a very regular basis. I’d do it again without hesitation if only I could.
Somehow I thought this was a song about baked potatoes…
Doggio, this evening arm licking was a plenty.
I am so ridiculously tired. It’s freaking annoying. I was having issues like this awhile ago and got better and then here I am again. Oh, and speaking of annoying, after work today I went to the dentist for an ‘emergency appointment’. Now, what do you think they’d do during an emergency appointment? Maybe fill the cavities, fix the bad fillings, something like that? NOPE. This was an appointment to pinpoint what the problem is. I have to wait until freaking January 7 to have a root canal. They even made a point of telling me that I might end up with an infection and if I do, then just call them and they’ll prescribe some antibiotics for me.
Um, yeah, sure.
Ok, done complaining. Off to find dinner. Hopefully I’ll be more awake in the morning.
I just found out that an old book of mine may be worth around $200+ dollars. It’s a young adult sci fi novel from the mid 60’s, titled The Happy Planet. I had been considering giving it, or another copy. to a young person who I think would enjoy it. So I went to ABE books and could not find a single copy available, in any condition. Going to Google I found a proof copy that had already been sold. I also found on copy for sale on Amazon, saying it was a rare book. They wanted $224. For a book in my junior high school library.
I could be seeing misinformation, so I’m going to search some more to see if this is real. I enjoyed the story and now don’t think I’ll give away this copy, unless I get lucky and find a cheaper copy, maybe at the library bookstore. They get all sorts of stuff donated.
If my Babcia had made them, I would call them EXTREMELY Delicious!!!
They are pastries.
This makes more sense to me. I never heard them called Angel Wings until sometime after Babcia had passed because we only called them chrustchiki. I saw them in a bakery labeled as Angel Wings.
I wish I knew exactly where my Babcias and Dziadzias were from. I think my maternal Dziadzia must have been from the part of Ukraine that was part of Poland in the late 1800’s because when we were cleaning out the farmhouse, we found a document that showed that he was conscripted into the Russian/Soviet??? army in the very early 1900’s.
A former boyfriend’s mom used to chastise me for not ironing his jeans and tee shirts. I told her that she should have taught him how to do it himself if he wanted sharp creases in either.
Appendages crossed for the museum gig, VanGo.
You’ve put me to shame. I have a steam iron for clothing that gets used rarely (I just don’t dress up like I used to) and a mini-iron for the studio for ribbon and sometimes as a heat source for a few other things.
Dang! Mine’s the minimum of $76 a month.
Yay!
That’s only about $100 more a month than my 560 square foot apartment in a working class neighborhood.
That’s what my family always called them.
That’s about where my g-grandparents and grandfather emigrated from.
Today was aggravating at irk. The restroom remodel that was supposed to be finished by Thanksgiving is still going on. This is the third one in the 19.5 years there and the most poorly managed one. Previous ones got most of the work done requiring water shut off to other restrooms overnight on the weekends. Right now, the one that they’re working on, they’ve managed to shut off H2O to the other set of restrooms in the production area for an hour or two at a time, meaning that people in some areas are walking over a quarter mile to the head. and then stand in line.
Today, they didn’t do that, but they shut off water to the production break room and the water coolers. I sent an email to my boss, my grand boss and great grand boss and Shazam! We had water in 10 minutes. I’m just ready for it to be over.
Good evening all. Had a soccer meeting to ‘draft’ kids for my U10 indoor soccer team, got a couple of them who I coached outdoors before so not all strangers. Home now and trying hard not to over-snack (it is accepted truth here that I will snack) but it’s a tough battle.
Got my mail in when I returned from the soccer meeting and besides all the people wanting money for their causes, I also got info from the Church of Scientology…why, I do not know, I have absolutely no interest in those wackos, but if they want to waste money mailing me stuff, I can throw it out pretty easily.
Thanks for the info. I was considering a Nissan Murano, but may give it a pass.
Love it!
Hippie, no idea what all that means, but if it makes you happy, then Hooray!
shoe, hope the long shift is not to onerous…
FCM, making a decision on a car that fast is not a good thing, IMHO. Still, a minivan does make sense for a 4-person family with two growing kids, so fingers crossed it’s a good deal.
Cat Glove, thanks for the update, that’s a lot of stuff to remember. And a pretty hefty work-load, take it easy tonight.
Knotty, hope the ear heals up soon.
Sticky Buns, I guess you can be grateful they know what the problem is and plan to fix it…but yeah, calling it an 'emergency appointment doesn’t make a lot of sense.
Cupcakes, I have a few old books that I sometimes wonder about, are they worth anything or not. May have to do some research one of these days.
red, sounds like the plumbers are named Larry, Curly and Moe…
And that’s about all the energy I’ve got for typewriting tonight. Take care and I’ll catch you on Hump Day.
Are you also paying pet rent? When I was doing food stamp work, I read many rental contracts and I was always silently outraged that people had to pay a large pet deposit AND a monthly pet fee. I understand the extra damage deposit, but rent on top of it was not right IMHO.
I kinda doubt this because of the numbers. FL has the largest percentage of old farts in the country, WV is second. Hubs was still working as a auto body repair guy back when he had his surgery.
I’ve gotten more follow up calls from our vets than I did when I was caring for him after he was released from a week in the hospital.
I will confess to starching Hub’s unders once or twice, but I can be a real bitch when it is needed. Mom used to “let” me iron sheets and pillow cases with the TV on, but I think that was mostly because she wanted to keep me busy while she was taking care of my younger sisters. She thought that too much TV was bad for us but I got extra TV time while I was ironing in the afternoon.
I have a steamer, an iron and a flat iron. The flat iron is the only one that has ever been used on clothing and that has been rare and far between.
I am so happy for you! Good tools make all the difference and you deserve the best! Happy cleaning
I still see older men with white crease marks on their jeans at times.
You win!
Last class I went to, I had to borrow a small iron from my table mate because I forgot to pack mine.
You don’t have a change jar? I thought everyone had a jar or bowl they tossed spare change in when they emptied their pockets. I know that they probably aren’t a thing now in the days of plastic, but you are my age. You use cash for things. How do you manage all of the pennies you get without a change jug?
nellie I agree that all curbs should be painted glow in the dark colors. I’ve never lived anywhere with curbs, but I have always made sure to put white rocks around the edges of the culverts for just that reason.
That’s really all I wrote. I didn’t care if anyone hated me, when you work for the government, many people hate you and some of them are your co-workers so you got used to that part.
I agree that all of that stuff should be addressed at the moment, saving it up for a year and then dumping it on someone is not good management at all.
Go Sadie! Good girl, you are not only making your corporal slaves happy, you are making some incorporeal ones happy as well!
Don’t wash them together, the towels can hurt your other clothes.
I have no opinion as to the nomenclature so will just settle on delicious.
It is a catchy song after all.
(Yes, I do follow bad comedians)
NEAT! I hope you are right, every one needs a book like that.
Which is why oopsie’s post made me happy. At least some renters are being charged a reasonable amount of money.
That’s insane, is that even legal? Back when I was working for the state, if the water was off for an hour, we all got sent home unless they managed to get porta-potties and hand-washing stations delivered first.
Copying in agreement, mostly because I missed quoting on my way down the list.
I am super happy for you and Sunflower. I hope you still have many happy quilting decades to share.
Don’t do that. Those things always come with a return envelope, stuff all of the garbage back into the envelope and drop it in the mailbox. Then you can waste their money twice.
And back to the cats yammering…there were deer in the back yard and one of them was looking in the window at the yelling cats. Jolene was standing on her back legs and beating on the window with her front paws and GG was all fluffed out behind her.
Mom has been forgetting so much lately. I am very sad about this, but ain’t a one of us getting any younger and she’s old enough to be my mother.
After I took my shower, I laid in bed for about an hour resting.
Nice evening - we watched the Spartans defeat the Golden Grizzlies 77-58.
Finished addressing Christmas cards.
Well I can’t believe what happened. I said that I was going to cut down on sending them out. We’re sending out a total of 36 cards, Hubs addressed 9, I addressed the rest. Last year we sent out 35 cards, so an increase of 1 this year. I guess last year was when I cut down; in 2022 we sent out 44.
So that’s one loose end tied down. Tomorrow I will take boxes to the Post Office.
ok, this is a sexist comment. Moms can also be rich.
He could contribute a lot more than that if you’d get him his own Instagram account. I understand those pet Instagrams can do allright for themselves through associations with pet products and also get a fair number of freebees. Spot could be an influencer.
Got a box at work for my Secret Santa stuff, and it fits the largest item so perfectly - like it was MADE for it - I actually showed it off.
(Okay, we were slow & bored.)
But seriously, anyone with OCD (or CDO) would be pleased.
Time to start painting!
I paint the box, something I’ve done for years - looks festive, won’t rip in postal machinery, and covers barcodes & old shipping labels.
Needs a day or two to finish it all & for the paint to dry.
My baked potato leftovers were delishush. I oven-fried some bacon & onion for toppings0, and then reheated it with more cheese.
Then, when I reheated again what was left of THAT I added more cheese & onion, so the last of it was basically melted onion-y cheese with occasional whispers of potato skin.
Gawds was it good.
Tossing Monkey some treats now, gonna smoke & kill a few zombies, then start paintin’!
Morning, mumpers! It’s currently 12c/54f with a predicted high of 13c/56f, and mostly cloudy. Weather app says “This weather fucking sucks more than Martin Shkreli, the fucking Pharma Bro. Oh, wait. Nope, fuck that guy.” OK, I have no idea who that is but it seems like a fair sentiment.
Doughnuts! Cookies are baked in the oven, if it’s fried then it isn’t a cookie
Much the same over here too, renting is often significantly more expensive than buying property. It used to be the case that most people rented when they were working away from home and didn’t want to live where they worked. Now it’s much more common for people to rent because they can’t afford to save the ridiculous amount of cash you need for a deposit, or they can’t get a mortgage.
Yesterday had a quiet end, I logged out of irk and made my campus food for the rest of the week. Did a bit of administrivia and then had some sofa time while 'im indoors made dinner. Today I was up stupidly early to come to campus, it’s very windy out there which means the trains have to run at slower speeds through some areas. Naturally that means everything’s late but that is pretty much usual. I’m hoping for a quiet day, but it’s going to be one of those days when very little gets done because the ADHD Squirrel is in today along with her bestie so they’ll be yapping all day.
I’m off to the pub with friends tonight so that is something to look forward to
All these prices are part of why we got a ramp and will look for other ways to add on to our home to make it more mobility friendly. The mortgage for our approximate 1700 sq ft home is around $815/month. We certainly couldn’t afford a rent or mortgage now on a one story place. But, there again, this place is 150 years old and the upkeep is sneaking up on us.
That was… Interesting?
Today I’ve got physical therapy and then I’m going to try to force myself to clean the floors. Otherwise nothing too exciting happening here.
PSA levels 6.0 and above are bad. My cancer was diagnosed by biopsy when my level went to 11.0. The drop from 11.0 to 0.04 indicates that my radiation and then later medications have worked and that, as of now, my Prostate cancer is in remission
