(Old) When Mom's Away...A Coasterless MMP

pilot Sorry to hear about the situation, but it sounds like both of you are handling as well as you can. IMHO, it’s better to get it over with rather than letting it fester.

Heaving was slightly better today, as the the only mouthbreather I had to deal with was Shaggy. I ordered a new mattress and box spring from OMF, since my current one is A. Old and B. one side looks like it was chewed by rabid dingos. Spot is in the sunroom, looking at the fuuds through the sliding glass door.

Sorry, Pilot. I hope the healing doesn’t hurt too much. {{{{hugs}}}}

I’m glad for your friend & his mom.

Sounds like me.

In my case, the reasons are: it’ll happen anyway, or it won’t; I’m paycheck-to-paycheck as it is, there’s nothing I could change via “planning”; once that happens, I don’t give a shit any longer anyway.

Hon, from how you’ve described your current day-to-day, and from the brief glimpses into your previous life with your late wife that you’re mentioned … I am utterly unsurprised.

This sounds like everyone who remembers an ex fondly while also telling you it’s good they’re not together anymore.

I rather suspect she feels the same.

In which case, neither of you is up for doing the persuading.

I’m struggling to comprehend. Do you mean you left it too long, like, in the oven and burned it?

Ah. Thank you.

Sounds like a whole lotta "If you’re a decent human being with two brain cells to rub together, you already know/do these things, and if not, well … "

Her husband may have some … ideas … but let’s keep it civil, shall we?

How does one make the mini version? Using quail eggs instead of chicken?

Ah, you were just combining Tai Chi with aquaerobics class.

Not even noon yet! Up at 11 a.m. on my Blessed Day Off; what a buncha bullshit!

Well, okay, “up” as in “awake,” not as in “vertical.” It is my day off after all.

Still have a few items on the To-Do List from earlier, but as per my usual, I’ve knocked down the low-hanging fruit and accomplished the easier/quicker tasks. Now all that’s left is the crap I really donwanna do.

Narrator: "She is already firing up Plants vs Zombies. Oh, look, most of a pre-roll … "

Not burned, just a little too long. It loses sweetness that way.

Poor Monkey managed to entirely miss today’s installment of The Dance Of The Sugarplum Fairies Flying Fud. Much earlier, he was sitting by the side window where I’d tossed out some seed yesterday, but it was pre-dawn and the lil’ birds were not yet stirring.

Hours later and the driveway and side yard is a-flutter and a-twitter (plus bonus black squirrel!) … and Monkey was sound asleep on a pile of quilts in my closet.

The Autumn Pumpkin

Mrs. L.A. bought a pumpkin, close to a foot in diameter, in October as a front porch decoration. It needed to go after Thanksgiving, because that’s when Autumn decorations come down and Christmas decorations go up. I told her I read something about someone putting their pumpkin in a yard and just leaving it. It rotted in place, and the next year there was a pumpkin patch. So Mrs. L.A. put the pumpkin in the side of the back yard.

And there it sat, a big orange globe. Eventually it started to get patches of black mould but it kept its shape. Two weeks ago the weather went from unseasonably mild to a hard freeze with temperatures as low as 6ºF. Last week the snow came. The orange ball in the yard became a white lump. Temperatures rose back into the 40s, and the rain came – and the rain is still coming. The snow melted, and the pumpkin was still intact.

This morning I looked at it, and it has collapsed. Soon, I think, the seeds will be exposed. I have little hope that anything will grow, as its resting place is covered with cedar bark and litter from the nearby cedar trees. Still, I find it an interesting experiment.

My experience in the PNW is that if you drop anything on the ground, something will grow there. I used to have to clean moss growth out of the metal seams on my car. I’m betting you will end up having to take a flame thrower to attack what’s going to come from that “experiment”.

snert It hasn’t happened that way yet, but he’s so literal minded that it wouldn’t be that surprising.

I wasn’t mathing right yesterday, which is why I always use a recipe for cheese. It takes three gallons for one wheel, I will only be starting two today, not five. I have no idea where I got those numbers, but I suspect the glass of mead I was enjoying might have had something to do with it.

Getting the sausage to stick to full sized eggs is already a bit of a faff, using quail eggs would be a serious bother! But they do sound tasty.

They are very convincing, aren’t they? I mushed the tip off of one of my red pencils and gave that to GG. When I heard him rolling it around on the floor, I searched the area he was using and found my laying tool under the loveseat. Little jerkface.

Oh, I really do not miss that yearly part of government work. You have my sympathy.

Pilot, I am really sorry this is going on in your life, but am also not really surprised because you two didn’t seem to have many common interests. I hope this is as painless as possible.

I do wonder if you really need an apartment now that you can spend more time traveling. You don’t have a lot of “stuff” and it sounds like what you do have is easily replaceable. There are some very nice extended stay motels now that business travel has become a thing again. The one I stayed in while I was in Boise would have made a very acceptable one bedroom apartment and had a functional kitchen. You could rent a climate controlled locker for your stuff and be free to fly away on a moments notice. Just a thought.

The produce truck got lost this morning, so I had plenty of time to sit and think while watching the birds. Today we got eggs, grapefruits, sweet potatoes, green apples, white onions, bread and a bunch of small bags of BBQ chips. Also some sort of carbonated, flavored energy drink that I will give to TC friend when I see her next.

TC is cancelled tomorrow because she has the flu. Or something that presents as the flu, so it could be RSV or COVID, who knows? I just do not understand people who like being sick*, I had the flu once and I hated it so I take steps every year to avoid it.

Have you done any cooking with corn flour? If so, how did it work? I’m trying to find non-wheat flours for hubs, but they are pretty pricey and I can’t find small one pound bags to experiment with.

Its getting on time to start delivering food, so I’ll check in later.

Have a great what is left of your day!

*yes, that is me harshly judging people who refuse to get vaccinated.

Well, I now have a functioning second bathroom, so that has been accomplished. I also showed that I could do something constructive by changing the light bulb for my front door light. Still need some cosmetic stuff done, will contact Mr. Handyman about that once the bill for the plumbing is paid (still waiting for that call). Rain is continuing and probably will do so for the rest of the day according to the Weather Wizards. Debating about getting my swimming in now or keep to the night owl schedule of the past 2 days…will give the plumbers another 25 minutes and then head off to the gym.

FCM, not sure if you have a tour scheduled in Ushuaia or not, I was there for a couple of days, it’s a nice town with several museums, but like many port cities, it gets very steep and hilly once you get off the beach, so it you and FCD are going exploring on your own, be aware it might be a bit strenuous. But still a lovely place, it’s the major jumping-off point for ships sailing (and landing) in Antarctica.

doggio, enjoy the new, unchewed mattress.

Flyboy, intriguing, be sure to keep us informed of the Zombie Pumpkin Patch.

JtC, Sherlock Holmes has got nothing on you in solving mysteries.

OK, need to change for swimming (I put on the swimmin’ trunks at home and carry my U’wear in my gym bag, just because that’s how I roll). Have a good afternoon/evening all.

Just got a text from my uncle that my other uncle died last night. He had Alzheimer’s, and we expected him to die last year. Out of my grandparents’ five kids, only Uncle George is left.

Only in combination with wheat flour, I’m afraid. But I know that arepas are made with corn flour or corn meal.

Ouch there Flyboy. Even expected death is still bad. I too will be interested in your impending pumpkin patch.

Thanks all for the supportive thoughts & hugs. I think Shoe really nailed the reality. She’s a wise woman. I’ve been stewing over this for a year now, and at least today I can feel the healing starting. Tomorrow might be a little different.

So far we’re starting amicably and I expect that to continue. She calmly asked me if there was another woman waiting in the wings and I truthfully said “No, and no plans for any any time soon. This is time for me to be solo.”

Right now I’m sitting outside in my shorts in the sun having a cigar & a bourbon on the rocks at a cigar bar.

That plan had occurred to me. Or other variations on the theme. I’ve got some leads to run down in those directions later today.

A bit to my surprise Her Ladyship offered that I don’t need to bail out of our shared place right away despite my having ambushed her. Not a long-term solution, but that takes the immediate pressure off. The fact we sleep such dissimilar schedules helps.

Jane, as to corn flour go to a place the Mexicans shop. They’ll have it in usable quantities and probably in multiple grinds.

Cheers all.

There really aren’t any Mexican shops out this way. People with dark colored skin try to keep a really low profile in redneck country.

It’s different in the valley, but I wouldn’t want to make that drive for just a few things. I’d end up at the needlepoint store just to justify the gas and I can only buy one more piece this year. I was saving it for Dallas in April, because if it is overcast I’ll need some retail therapy to make up for the disappointment.

I’m glad you can take your time moving out, that will help you make your plans.

When the boss who pretty much kicked me out of her department messaged me to ask questions about my former position, I politely suggested that she ask someone who works in her department.

I’m sorry to hear of your uncle’s passing flyboy.

Irked, came home in 60F rain. Hard to believe that last Monday and Tuesday were snow days.

Stay safe and healthy y’all!

Wicked burn!! (as the kids say). Nicely done.

MetalMouse, we’ll be in Ushuaia tomorrow and we’re taking a catamaran trip to see wildlife, including a penguin rookery. Weather permitting, of course. Our tour of Punta Arenas was nice, tho not nearly enough time in one museum. I posted some pics on your FB that I thought you’d enjoy.

We’re underway again, cruising the Strait of Magellan. It should be a calm trip, tho they’re forecasting a windy tomorrow.

Chillage ensues.

I’m reading, I’m feeling you all, I am too exhausted to give much right now. I’ve oscillated today between nausea from the intensity of my anxiety to resigned acceptance that the next several days are going to suck.

It was a very busy day and I ate too much sugar.

I got a little bit of a reprieve as I vented for twenty minutes during my development meeting, when I told my boss I had to drive out to the office tomorrow for a single meeting and then drive home again for another meeting she said, um, no. So my office meeting is cancelled, which means I save a bunch of time not coming into the office, and tomorrow after our appointment with the financial advisor I get to come straight home and spend most of the day working on the grant I’m stressing about. Big win. I don’t think I’m getting out of working this weekend, but oh well. This couldn’t be more last minute. I hate doing things last minute. I am trying so hard to keep it together.

That spill my MIL took that I mentioned before? She met with her dentist and the news is not great. She has fractured the bone that connects her jaw to her teeth and has to get at least three teeth replaced and has a lot of oral surgery and wired jaws in her future. She’s held up surprisingly well with this news.

I had to teach my husband, in college, to add soap. Even throughout college his mother did his laundry on weekends. Don’t even get me started on his cooking skills (or lack thereof.) His mother has apologized to me profusely, lol.

Lovely pics, I rode a Narrow-Gauge railroad near Ushuaia while I was there, but didn’t have time for the catamaran trip. Sounds like a lot of fun.

Flyboy, sorry to hear about your uncle, but as time passes, all good things… My condolences.

Pilot, glad things are going amicably so far; hoping that they remain that way.

red, well-played.

Spicy, glad some of the worry besetting you has been lifted, I’m sure you’ll come through this just fine (exhausted, but fine). And MIL…OUCH!! Hope she has a real good dental plan.

Got my swimming in (did a mile in 800, 760, and 220year chunks with whirlpool in-between) and sauna time. Still raining and the way the weather map looks it’s likely to continue into tomorrow, there are flood warnings out for some locations. Still 60F outside, so there is that.
Dinner has been consumed and sloth will now occupy the remainder of the evening.

Howdy Y’all! We procured and stowed provisions this mornin’ then promptly slothed the rest of the day away as is our wont. Leftovers got finished up for sup. We napped and day drank. Now chillage (cause sloth is very tirin’) ensues.

{{Pilot}} sorry this is happenin’ but it reads like it’s been a thing that’s been comin’ on for a while. Hope things continue amicably.

FlyBoy sorry about your great uncle. Even an expected death can be hard to deal with. I, too, am interested in what happens with the zombie pumpkin. That would be a great band name!

Spicey my mom taught my sibs and me basic domestic skills for which I am truly grateful. It truly amazes me that I have friends who still are baffled by laundry, basic housekeepin’, and basic cookin’ skills. Glad you’re teachin’ some of that to your son. He may grumble now, but in years to come he’ll look back and be glad you did.

Uncle. He was the ‘cool uncle’ when I was a kid. Funny, establishment-groovy in the early-'70s, had a ski boat, lived in Oregon… He and my late aunt (his wife) sold their house and lived in a 5th wheel trailer in Arizona. Lost track of him, and didn’t see him until my recently-late aunt’s 96th birthday party. Looked a bit Trumpy. I know my cousin and her husband are Trumpists. (Cousin-by-marriage disappeared fromFacebook, which is unsurprising considering the Trump stuff he posted.) I’ll behave myself if I’m invited to the funeral. I have the day off Friday, so I may buy a suit.

It would! As I said, I’m not hopeful because of the cedar bark; but Chefguy says it might grow.
