(Old) Who, me? I started the MMP today!

I got out of that one by virtue of going to Catholic school.

Up, caffeinating, breakfasted and fixing to do Sunday chores. It’s colder today than it has been and is slated to get below 40F tonight. Not much shakin’ at CasaRoja otherwise.

Stay safe and healthy y’all!

Morning everyone.

It is 64F and RAINING! Its coming down at two inches an hour with accompanying wind, lightning and thunder. It is magnificent! It was even better an hour ago cause the morning fog was still lingering in the forest, but it is still wonderful.

There are also a couple of cardinals taking shelter on our front porch. GG is losing his fuzzy lil mind over them and Jolene has turned into a self aiming catling gun again.

The power has been flickering a little. Not enough to convince me that Hubs should be allowed to turn the genny on but enough to warn me that I shouldn’t type up a long post because I don’t want the interwebz to eat it if the internet drops. I guess I could probably force my stuff to use my hotspot instead, but then I’d have to remember to let change the settings later…

I like the new avatar too, FCM!

For a long time mine was the Metro rail map, zoomed in to show just the stop nearest to my house. But at some point – maybe around a year ago? – I decided that was too close to revealing where I live, so I changed it to the blank red nametag (another Doper had used a similar avatar in the past, but changed theirs before I changed mine). I haven’t had any avatar ideas since, so it’s likely to stay like this for the foreseeable future.

It’s currently 64°F with an expected high of 68, but it’s overcast and windy and it’s gonna storm later: The Weather Channel says “Thunderstorms possible around 12:30 PM. A few storms may be severe.” It should all be over by dinnertime, but it’s perfect weather for staying home and doing very little.

I  Wallace & Gromit!

Definitely not…I hope they’re able to figure out what’s going on tomorrow!

Yay!

But here is where I show my complete ignorance of your industry: I’d assumed that people got their tips at the end of each day…how does it actually work/how often are you tipped out?

Ha! :joy:

Me, too! Dad is 100% Irish, and Mom was 100% Italian.

Good morning.

It’s 40F and damp outside. We’ll have a steady light rain until about 10:00 a.m., and then afternoon showers and a high temperature of around 49F; typical PNW early spring weather

I’m glad to read those of you in some of the states affected by severe weather are okay. I was a little worried.

I did not attend Catholic school, I attended a plain ol’ public school. I was baptized Catholic, but never even had First Communion, so there you have it. I did attend Sunday School for some years at a non-denominational church. They had a bus that picked me and my sister up. I didn’t believe, even then. Oddly, I always say a little thank you when the lights are all green, or something has gone my way.

Not much on the agenda for today; I did all the laundry except for our towels yesterday. I’ll have to wash some clean towels in the linen closet with the dirty towels because I don’t have enough for a full load. This serves two purposes, it keeps the towels in the linen closet fresh after sitting in there for quite some time, and of course, washes the truly dirty towels. The towels we use on the daily are the newest and most plush, that’s why we like to use them.

Sticky, I’m sorry to read that Annie will require the surgery, but am glad they know the cause of her problem and it’s fixable. I hope both her surgery and your nerve block go smoothly.

Okay, I need to dust. Those pups churn a lot of it.

Thanks for the birthday wishes. Ended up buying chocolates and Bricelets (Bretzeli in German, similar to the Norwegian Krumkake) made with Gruyere double cream. Didn’t have time to go through the dairy, and we can buy Gruyere at home.

I’ve been curious about the H.R. Giger museum, so now I’ve been there and bought a t-shirt for hubby. All in all, it was a good day.

And now I know what to do with the leftover buttermilk in the fridge. Thanks for sharing the recipe.

That’s a fun set. I saw the movie when I was about 10 or so, at the neighborhood library. Probably most of it went over my head.

Beeeeeeep. The cruelty of this administration knows no bounds. Good luck to your nephew and Lucy.

Looks at date. Happy (belated) birthday to you and your mom! :birthday_cake: :balloon:

:crossed_fingers:

I’m not sure which side to root for. A new leak or a bad repair. Both seem bad. Hope it’s an easy fix.

Had a yoyo for a long time, but then the string stopped retracting. Put my badge on a carabiner, which usually hangs from a belt loop. If I don’t have any belt loops, I have a lanyard as a back up. Belt loop is easier, since the door locks are at waist height.

The landscapers at work do this for the first few mowings. We have lawn daisies (Bellis perennis - Wikipedia) in spring. Not supposed to be spring for another week, but the flowers have decided it’s full spring. We only have crocuses in our lawn, so we wait until they finish flowering before the first mowing.

Thank you nurse Boo for the vaccination overview. :blue_heart: I’m not quite geezer (Shingrix is only for 65+ here in Switzerland), but I can use this with my parents and make sure that they are up to date. I know they got their flu and Covid, but I’m not sure about the others.

Glad Shadow’s back home again. :people_hugging:

:people_hugging:
This really doesn’t seem real. I do hope it’ll get better. Soon. :worried:

Quoted for truth.

I’ve been posting a lot of kindness things on FB, and I guess it’s spreading. Gift from my parents, “In A World Where You Can Be Anything, Be Kind”.

While I may not want to hear it, I will read it. And I thank you for saying it, and for giving us the option to decide.

Do you have eastern redbud and flowering dogwood trees? So gorgeous. I have a picture on my desktop at work of spring flowering trees, which don’t grow here.

I think I wrote a book, so maybe I should go do something productive. Or just find something else to read on a drizzly Sunday.

There’s a thunderstorm going, with a frog strangler of a rain band, and a flood advisory. Spot took a dump, and sang a little song about it.

Not me, I stick to Jameson, Guinness, and poor decisions. :tumbler_glass: :four_leaf_clover:

Okay, I LOL’d.

Thigh was roas-- … uh, baked, and consumed. Clean sheets on bed accomplished, hot shower for me, full tummy. Much deep sleepage occurred.

A who in the what now?

Tonight oughta be “fun.” Man am I glad I was early out last night.

Thank the gods we’re closed tomorrow.

CCD as a kid, Catholic school as a teen.

I should’ve gotten hazard pay or something.

That’s quality entertainment!

Most restaurants and bars, sure.

But places where not every crew member interacts with customers directly, while also busting ass for hours on end, tend to work differently. The tips are compiled & then distributed according to internal rules, which vary wildly.

Dispensaries, coffee shops … anywhere there’s a “tip jar” by the register (typically) handles things differently.

Lotta places tally up your hours and then tips go out by % of that, which to me is the most equitable process. Work more hours, get more tips. Call out (and thus everyone else has to work harder) and you get less.

At my current job, they wait till there’s enough for everyone to get fifty bucks, and then everyone gets theirs. It’s probably my least favorite thing about this place (I get the same tips as people who work half my hours ) but it’s an entrenched thing at a long-time mom’n’pop family biz, so there’s nothing to be gained from grousing about it.

But it does mean if I work the fryer for seven straight hours (and thus never so much as see a customer) I’m not left out of the tip pool, either.

Guaranteed.

That’s, uh, going to become more common, in the coming years.
For not-good reasons, as you surely know.

Was tossing Monkey some treats as I was reading/typing, and he caught one in midair and ate it directly out of his paw.

What a monkey!

Now he’s lounging on the edge of my circle-chair with me, having investigated the option of going outdoors (the starlings are going nutz, and he wanted in on that party) but it’s SNOWING Y’ALL so he noped out of that idea pretty quickly.

So after nearly 70 F (sunny & sticky) on Friday, it’s snowing … and as the kids say, or so I’ve heard, I am here for it.

Clearly your new avatar should be a Lego of distinction.

It snowed this morning. The roads and streets are wet but clear. I think I’m gonna hunker down today. Not slothing since I have roll sucked and cleaned the humidifier. Artichoke and cod for dinner. I want to like chicken thighs but they creep me out.

Pretty chilly this morning. We had to do laundry, so we fortified ourselves with pancakes and sausages.

A good visit from eldest son and his kids yesterday. We scarfed 5 Guys and then just BS-ed the afternoon away. It’s interesting how tiring having company can be, though.

Finished the crosswords, Wordled, solved the Spelling Bee.

Got in some guitar practice yesterday, working on Neil Young’s “Old Man”. Simple chording, but my hands don’t want to do what I tell them to do. The fingertips are toughening up a bit, so that’s good.

Hi, everybody. It’s just after 1pm where I am. The last of the shows Erin is in will start at 2pm. Should last three hours, plus the aftermath. So around 7pm, Erin will get the news. Shit. Her parents must feel like they’re in the crow’s nest of the Titanic, without binoculars.

We went last night, to the final evening show. Did I mention it was Mary Poppins? I adore the books, have since I was a kid. Liked the Disney movie slightly less, but this was the stage version. Actually, I’ve never seen a stage version, so I don’t know if anything was further changed, relative to the London and Broadway versions. Neleus, the statue who comes to life, was included, and he was in book 3! A lot of canonical stuff that Disney didn’t touch on. Anyway, it was top-notch! The singing, the acting, the dancing, and the crew’s efforts. Seriously, there was a lot of scenery-switching, and a lot of complicated lighting, all professionally done. Only one thing went a tiny bit wrong. When Jane, and then Michael, hugged Mr. Banks, they somehow both came in contact with his body mike, resulting in loud crunching sounds. But that being the only error sort of proved it was a pretty tight show. Oh, and Erin was one of the unchosen nannies, then one of the dancing ladies in the park, and of course, a dancing chimney sweep! And yes, we gave her flowers. “Just not roses, or anything red that might look like roses,” I was told. So Erin was smiling when we left. :face_without_mouth:

Me too-not quite sure why, but I know I dislike gristle and gnawing on bones-except for wings of course. I’ll eat thighs if placed before me but don’t prepare them for myself at home, character flaw I guess.

We are now under a tornado watch, it is very exciting.

Other than that, it is nice and sunny with a gentle breeze. I spent the last hour just sitting on the porch and listening to the forest. It is never quiet, not even in the middle of winter and I had no idea it was like that.

I’ve seen pics of power poles blown over up north but the radar map says there isn’t really anything to worry about. We can close the blinds and move into the back hall if need be but historically, this area doesn’t really do weather attacks like are happening elsewhere.

I’m glad you enjoyed the show, also sad for Erin and her parents. What a tough time for everyone.

I use a lot of thighs but as ingredients for other things, not as the featured meat. We think the meat tastes better in soups and stews.

I start getting peopled out after a couple of hours no matter how much I love them.

It was the highlight of my day

I didn’t think your store ever closed, is this normal and I just don’t pay as much attention as I should?

lights just flickered again. ttyl

Sorry - VRBO is an acronym for “Vacation Rental By Owner”, which is pretty similar to AirBnB, except that VRBO leans more towards stand-alone vacation homes, and AirBnB lists more apartments and condos.

After one too many experiences with noisy and even dangerous hotels, we gave up and nowadays pony up a bit more money to stay at a VRBO. It’s far more comfy and homey and you can recoup some of the cost by preparing some of your own meals in a kitchen.

We’re now here at our favorite Sonoma County VRBO, and we’ve stayed at this place a dozen times through the years. The hostess is a terrific woman and knows us well.

It’s been enough years since I’ve worked in restaurants, like back when most transactions were done in cash, that I’m curious how tips added on the tip line are handled. Same way as you describe?

That’s what I do. I always have several packages in the freezer.

I made Italian wedding soup for Sunday dinner. I used ground turkey for the meatballs and that’s a mistake that I won’t make again. There wasn’t as much flavor and they fell apart when I dropped them into the broth. I’ll stick to pork or beef in the future.

Working on the coloration of the Xmas card set today. Once that’s done, I’ll do the assembly.

Ground turkey is such a delicate meat, I learned to never use it as a sub, it needs it’s own way of spicing and handling.

I was just thinking about that today. We used to get a lot of ground turkey in our surplus boxes and now all of those recipes I have are just taking up space.

I do miss the surplus boxes, they made me be flexible in the kitchen. Now that I’m back to just shopping for food, we are getting into a rut.

I have looked around, there aren’t any gleening programs in this part of the state and I’m not willing to drive a couple of hours for a box of random veggies. There are many food banks here but of course I won’t go to them, we aren’t eligible for that sort of thing and that would be taking something that other people might need.

Tonight we are having Mexican Tortilla soup, featuring chicken thighs! There will be grated sharp cheddar, diced chives, sliced tomatoes and avocados. If I was cooking for myself, there would also be fried tortilla chips, but hubs is now Mr. Lo-carb and I’m not going to bother. I will bother with a prickly pear margarita or maybe a couple of glasses of sangria, I haven’t decided yet.

The night is young, both is also an option.

There are lines down up north which are making our lights flicker but watching the radar shows the storms parting around our area and rejoining around Charleston. I’ll bet they are getting hammered. the king clawed back the infrastructural money Biden gave to the state to improve the centuries old flood systems and it seems as though unfinished projects are worse than no improvement projects at all.

How far away do they live? Can you take your laundry to their place and visit while it’s washing? After all you’ve allowed them to do plenty laundry at your place back when they were young. Heck, I was washing my big things at Mom’s house when I was thirty, LOL!

I know that politics are not welcome here, this is a safe place from all of the ugly.

However, my life is now surrounded by the ugly and it really is pretty consuming. I’m fairly sure I’m wasting a lot of time and energy and stress by leaning around with my protest sign and hearing the hate on both sides is pretty wearing as well.

This is the only safe place I can vent, I was firmly told in the politics thread that public protests are a waste of time and if I choose to put myself out there…well, I deserve what I get.

The surprising part in the middle of all of the shit are the fires raging across Oklahoma. I’ll bet they would just love to get some of the rain that is pounding other states cause dang! I’ll bet they wish FEMA was still around, but hey, they got what they voted for.

:joy:

Howdy Y’all! We did not go and form adults (that sounds creepy, I like it!). We went to Jack’s and broke fast instead. Then we deheathenated. Then nappage and day drinkin’ were accomplished. My RDOS cred is back! BLTs were eaten a little bit ago and the biiiiiig trash can has been hauled all the way down to the road for pickup tomorrow. Tomorrow night is men’s night over to the church house, so steaks are marinatin’ and beer is chillin’.

It’s about a 40 minute drive by freeway. My wife would never agree to it.

You are married to a fuddy duddy.

Mom stayed with us during the dark winter of Covid and she said she got a lot of joy over using our washer/dryer and detergent after all of those years.

It’s more a matter of toting the laundry down in the elevator or driving to Wisconsin. Not really a contest.
