The problem with many of those who think that there is a “true” right or wrong also seem to think that they can determine that truth from bronze age folklore.
The Muslims who oppose LGBTQ+ books are not Moral Relativists, they do believe that they are standing for what is true and right.
That’s also an issue, the idea that we need to harken back to the morality of thousands of years ago, as if we haven’t improved as a global society in any way since then.
Things are far from a utopia, but what was everyday existence back then would be horrific today.
Strictly speaking, I suppose we should say that Muslims are following the ravings of a lunatic from the dark ages, who tacked his lunacy onto bronze age folklore.
Correct - while moral relativism is harmful bullshit, it is impirtant to realize that without perfect information (which we will never have) it is impossible to have perfect knowledge of the truth. So we should use our knowledge to do the best we can, and constantly reevaluate our position.
No, but the guy defending them in the linked opinion piece… well, he probably isn’t one either, but he is constructing his argument in the framework of moral relativism.
An 11-year-old student, described as an A student who never got into trouble, has been kicked out of a Catholic school. Because, you see, his parents dared to disagree with the new homophobic priest who yanked books from the shelves, among other actions. Doesn’t matter that the parents are staunch volunteers at the school, or that the boys father and his 15 siblings all attended the school.
Should we be worried about our fellow Dopers in Hawaii? WBC says:
The controversial Westboro Baptist Church, based in Kansas, claimed that Hawaii will be “utterly destroyed” on Sunday.
“The churches of Hawaii have doomed the inhabitants with lies about the eternal God,” Westboro Baptist Church said in a statement announcing a protest at three churches in Hawaii. “The watchers must (and will) publicly pronounce the warning on Sunday.”
The Westboro Baptist Church said its members will picket outside of Grace Bible Church and King’s Cathedral in Kahului as well as Wailuku Union Church in Wailuku.
Yeah, that’s my idea of a vacation in paradise, too.
I wasn’t sure where else to put this, so I’m pitting “pregnancy crisis centers”. Not because they’re new, but so I can share this good news: the Governor of PA has cut their state funding.
Christianity Today Editor: Evangelicals Call Jesus “Liberal” and “Weak”
The editor in chief of Christianity Today is warning that evangelical Christianity is moving too far to the right, to the point that even Jesus’s teachings are considered “weak” now.
Russell Moore resigned from the Southern Baptist Convention in 2021, after years of being at odds with other evangelical leaders. Specifically, Moore openly criticized Donald Trump, whom many evangelical Christians embraced. Moore also criticized the Southern Baptist Convention’s response to a sexual abuse crisis and increasing tolerance for white nationalism in the community.
And here’s part of what’s got him worrying:
Moore told NPR in an interview released Tuesday that multiple pastors had told him they would quote the Sermon on the Mount, specifically the part that says to “turn the other cheek,” when preaching. Someone would come up after the service and ask, “Where did you get those liberal talking points?”
“What was alarming to me is that in most of these scenarios, when the pastor would say, ‘I’m literally quoting Jesus Christ,’ the response would not be, ‘I apologize.’ The response would be, ‘Yes, but that doesn’t work anymore. That’s weak,’” Moore said. “When we get to the point where the teachings of Jesus himself are seen as subversive to us, then we’re in a crisis.”
