Not a specific eligious fuck, and not exacty in the NEWS as such, this fairly thorough Medium article suggests that religion, in general, seems to fuck things up. Things we consider not-so-desirable tend to correlate with areas of greater religiosity.
Replying to myself once again: The shooting had nothing to do with Greg Locke’s preaching. It was aimed at his stepson, who’s been in other kinds of trouble.
Not in the news, but I don’t know where else to put this. I can’t find a recent, relevant “crazy religious shit” thread.
In the mail today, I received the short book called National Sunday Law by A. Jan Marcussen. I searched and it doesn’t appear that this book that has supposedly been printed over 40 million times has ever been mentioned on the Dope. Sounds like the federal government will soon be mandating we go to church and then relax on Sundays. That sounds goofy, but with the current admin…maybe not.
BTW, anyone else receive this in the mail? Anyone want my copy? ![]()
No can do; jail please.
But…but, Sunday is the day I go whoring ![]()
He’s a Seventh-Day Adventist, so he thinks that would be very bad thing, since the real Sabbath is on Saturday and observing it on Sunday is the work of the guy with the horns and pointy stick.
I could see where some people who hold to a strict Saturday sabbath might be a bit freaked out at the thought of mandating Sunday church attendance, as some of the more RWNJ folks in the current administration think they can do. Is it this book? Do you have any idea how you got on a mailing list for something like this?
I also heard earlier today that Jay Bakker got a call from a TMZ reporter wanting to confirm a rumor that his father, one James Orsen Bakker AKA Jim Bakker, was deceased. As I write this, he is not.
You have such a slim chance of picking the correct flavor of religion and if you pick wrong, you go to hell. “Die, heretic!” as Emo Philips would say. That’s why I don’t even try.
The reason this has been printed over 40 million times isn’t because folks are paying $10 for it on Amazon. Someone is buying them in bulk and mailing to everyone. It was addressed to “current resident”. Maybe Gideon doesn’t just give out Bibles?
If God expected us to rest on Sunday He wouldn’t have invented football.
Amen!
Or hiking!
Praise the Lord and pass the football!

That made me LOL as well! Your award nails it.
First published in 1983, apparently. I was hoping for 1883 (or even 1933) so that $5 would be a significant sum and the book was just never updated.
Last fall, one of my Facebook friends got a mass mailing from IIRC Boys Town that not only included a calendar, mailing labels, and notepads, but, as she put it, A FREAKIN’ PAIR OF SOCKS! She has no idea how they got her address, because she had never donated to them, nor had her parents, to her knowledge, whose house she inherited.
FWIW, I finally got one of those random Jehovah’s Witness handwritten letters, which they were doing since COVID instead of going door to door, a few months ago. I put it in the recycle bin.
I donated $500 to MSF/DWB after the 2004 tsunami, and I even remember doing it on the evening of December 31st, so I could get the tax deducation. I started getting big press packs with things designed for triptych displays and the like, and after the 2nd or 3rd one contacted them and told them to use their money to help people in serious medical danger. Never got another one (and I’ve donated smaller amounts a few times since).
I’ve stopped donating to several orgs that then go full-press court on you for more money. I feel like some of them pert near spend my entire donation trying to get me to donate more. Thanks, but no thanks.
Ha, I also had that same thought. Nope, 1983. And to my 13 year old self at the time, $5 was really cool (that would fill up my dirtbike fuel tank!). But, you know, I was 13.
I donated about 10 years after that, and for the next few years I received enough reusable shopping bags to ensure that every vehicle in my household now has at least three of the things stashed inside. I think they were some significant percentage of recycled plastic, so I guess that’s good?
I donated to some U of Minnesota fund (forget which one) in memory of my uncle. After about 4 years of updates on what good work they were doing I finally called them to let them know it was a one time thing. The mail stopped, and I think they ended up money ahead on my donation.
Several years ago, a relative by marriage who was a deacon in the Catholic church requested memorial donations be made to a certain Catholic charity. I, too contacted them and told them the same thing, and haven’t seen anything else since.
