I’m trying to figure out the photo included in that link. The players seem to be flashing the L (for “loser”) hand sign, either directly at other players or symbolically to all their opponents, or something. If that is the sort of sportsmanship fostered by that coaching staff, it’s not surprising that some of the players carried it further on their own. (edited to add: or it might just be for Lowell, in which case, never mind on that point.)
Also, it appears that many of the players on that team are of Asian extraction. Which is interesting only to show that this was not unalloyed white-supremacy racism. Lowell High is elite academically, not for sports, admission is academically merit-based, and competition to get in is fierce. There are probably a lot of elitist attitudes at that school that aren’t being addressed.
First, good luck identifying them accurately; you might get a few but others would certainly get away with it. Probably not a good basis for punishment, nor for building better attitudes.
But more importantly, I think it is appropriate at this age to hold their coaching staff accountable more than the students, who are emotionally and intellectually unformed at this age, and are likely the recipients of bad leadership. Team and individual behavior should be monitored going forward, as well as coaching leadership, to make sure that lessons are learned and followed.

So your contention is that high academic performance correlates with “elitist”/racist beliefs? 
It looks like close to 1/3 of Lowell’s admissions have non-“elite” grades and test scores, while coming from socioeconomically disadvantaged backgrounds and/or groups historically underrepresented at the school.
Maybe the problem isn’t so much “elitism”, but rather jocks behaving badly, which occurs in lots of settings.
Really? Doesn’t look obvious to me that “many” are.
What’s the first part of that passage? Anything temporal? Maybe something like “in/on that day you shall surely die”?

Full disclosure: I like sports. I despise school sports programs. There is zero incentive for the staff to instill the values which are the supposed goals of the program nor for the students to make those values part of their own character.
No, just that people being people, those selected for merit-based admission after tough competition are more likely than regular students in regular schools to feel special, to be encouraged to feel special by their parents and possibly even the teachers.
