I thought it was some pretty awesome detective work. Something about bodybuilding forums is familiar to me, like someone was talking about them several months ago.
I don’t understand why people waste so much energy with posters like Minnesota whatever. The one about the friend and the Nigerian is such an obvious troll post.
One reason I made this my only messageboard a decade ago is that the halls here are pretty clean. When someone starts littering, a kid with dorky glasses (with a cool canvas sash and a badge on it) sneaks up and kicks them in the butt.
Honestly, that was the post that pegged him as a troll to me. Not the opinion itself, but the spammy way he presented it. I avoided every other post from him after seeing that one.
Right there. You admit you were making fun of him for the action. That means you didn’t support it. You’re still even trying to paint it in an unfavorable light.
FWIW, I don’t so much conciser my latest results to be “hall monitoring” but a puzzle to be solved. Similar to when someone asks about some fact they can’t track down about something I’ve never heard before, I take it as a challenge to go down rabbit holes and google it up myself. I’m not a gamer–tackling obscure information is my World of Grand Minecraft.
I agree it’s not “hall monitoring” and your description of your behavior seems to me pretty much what I read SDMB for: “a challenge to go down rabbit holes…tackling obscure information”. Keep up the good work!

It’s taking far, far, longer than we thought. In fact poking around the internet as a whole it looks like we’re getting behinder, not aheader. Oh well, at least that’s job security.
No, that’s how you chose to read it. My intention was to rib him. He can finger trolls to his heart’s delight. I don’t expect anybody to stop their vigilance just because I made a smartass comment. Sheesh, chill.
Without a smiley, it sure looked like you were insulting him. And his links were helpful. Detective work to track down a troll isn’t “stalking.” If it is, I do a lot of “stalking” myself.
I read your post as a most likely a joke, but it wasn’t exactly clear. Always best to err on the over-communicate side when writing. We can’t see if you’re giggling or not.
You still keep saying it. You still keep saying you were “ribbing” him. That means you were teasing or making fun of him for what he said. You still keep saying he was stalking people. Unless you think stalking is a perfectly okay thing to do, then you are still saying he did something bad. You have communicated that you think what he did was bad. That means you want him to stop it.
I could actually believe you were joking from the original comment, if not for all your subsequent comments doubling down on saying the same thing. You do not react like someone who made a joke and was accidentally misunderstood. Not a single apology. Just doubling down.
And is there a more meaningless imperative verb than “chill”? It just means “I’m gonna pretend you are too upset so I can dismiss what you have to say.”
