On behalf of the human race, I apologize

Gaybashing.

To all those who have ever been descriminated against, I apologize for those who do this. I apologize that there are those who think that your sexual orientation is a reason to beat you to a bloody pulp. I apologize that there are people out there who think that to be homosexual is a biblical sin, and act upon that belief by commiting a moral sin. I apologize to you, and hope that one day, these people will figure out that all they are doing is promoting the loss of human morals, without which this would surely be a much more common thing, especially to all of you minorities.

Sometimes I wish I were a member of a minority group, just so I would know what it’s like. Then I read threads like the above mentioned one, and I am glad that I am not. I would not be able to handle it. If I had to go through what they go through every day, I would not survive.

To all of you minorities, I just want to be the first to say:

You are heroes.

You are some of the bravest people on the planet for putting up with what people do to you. You should be recognized for your bravery, but if you are, all sorts of descriminators will know you and beat you all the more. You live with the knowledge that at any moment, some crazy person could leap out from behind the bushes and beat you to death because you are different from them.

Yet you keep going.

I don’t know how, but you do.

And for that, I salute you.

On behalf of the human race, I accept your apology.

I think it’s great that we’re all going to get along now. I’m really looking forward to that.

All of them? Through a simple accident of birth they become “heroes?” And finally, although I should probably have asked this first, define “minority.”

Everybody is a minority somewhere. If you want to experience this then go live in another country for a while. Vacation trips don’t count. Or seek someone different than yourself near where you live and try to fit in when they are meeting with their friends. The first time I felt as if I were a minority was when I was at a friends party that consisted largely of Latinos. I was welcome, but as soon as everybody started speaking in Spanish, which was perfectly natural, I felt like I didn’t even exist. This feels strange enough. Then try to live in a country where you don’t even look like others or speak the language. It’s not exactly the same, because normally as an American (I’m making that assumption) you’ll be richer or have more power than that person might have in your country. But you will be excluded, possibly endangered, and almost definitely discriminated against, even if you don’t realise it at first.

Er, accident? Um…

And re: this …“I apologize that there are people out there who think that to be homosexual is a biblical sin, and act upon that belief by commiting a moral sin.”

Mortal sin. And, at least according to Catholic Doctrine, if they’re never sorry for it, they ain’t going to Heaven.

One hopes God can show them why it’s a Bad Thing to beat His children.

More of a species, really.

Yet another person who doesn’t actually know Catholic doctrine, yet feels obligated to post his or her incorrect statements.

Then I can be a hero- rather than those glory hogging police and firemen!

Yeah. You have no control over where, or to whom, you’re born. Therefore, accident. Probably not the best word. How 'bout we call it “random chance?”

Rather than pick apart the OP for its broadness, I’d like to point out that the purpose of the Straight Dope is to eradicate ignorance. In reading Anubis’s post, I’m thinking here’s a person who really had no idea how badly some people are discriminated against, and who has taken the time to make a kind gesture to those people, along with an implied promise to not perpetuate this kind of discrimination himself (or herself.) I’m betting Anubis’s ignorance of the facts of discrimination has been somewhat diminished, if not completely eliminated. In that light, I’d say it was a well-meaning post and a definite step in the right direction. It’s not very nice to belittle the gesture.

Well…let us never forget the copiousness of male’s discrimination against males…themselves.

Every damn thing is a competition.

Height.
Weight.
Education.
Gross annual salary.
Who is losing hair and who isn’t?
What does the body look like?
What is the market value of your home?
Do you drive a Mercedes or a Geo?
Does your wife inspire lust or sympathy?

You testosterone types beat yourselves up with any and/or everything with which you can ‘best’ one another.

Discrimination?

Discrimination is being either a woman or a child.

Male children will eventually be enjoined to partake of the games.

Women and girl children never will.

In every country - in every culture - females are discriminated against.

Ah, come on …guys, fess up.

As much as you love your wives, children and girlfriends…you’re still pretty damn secure that men still ‘run’ the world.

Right?

I’ve cut women too much slack, myself. I’m going to work on being a little more misogynistic for a while.

Well then you’ll want to run up to Portsmouth Abbey School and St. Marks Catholic Church and let them know they’re wrong because you say so. Or do you have anything to back this up?

FWIW, I was raised Catholic and was such up until less than a year ago.

My father, who’s a monk, will probably also be interested to know that one can get into Heaven in a state of sin, especially mortal.

UB, I think we’re seeing eye-to-eye:) I just had a slight problem with the word choice.

Being that this is thread is already here and all:

I must apologize for the statement made by the religious zealot on FOX news (I know, what the hell was I doing watching that) I saw last night.

He said he thought that homosexuality was neither caused by genetics nor “by choice.” He confidently asserted, as if he were the expert in such matters, that it was caused around the 5 y.o. age when boys don’t break the bonds with their mother and start bonding with their dads. He was talking about homosexuals in general, and he didn’t even pause to think about how this can possibly apply to homosexual women. It was as if the only people he considered to be homosexual were men or something.

Is this type of stupidity common? Do homophobes have no problems with lesbians?

Volitare, homophobes usually have no problem with lesbians as long as they are blonde and busty. If they aren’t, then they have a problem.

Next time you meet a homophobe, ask him if he watches lesbian porno. Odds are he’ll say yes.
