Well, she was matched up against Streep ( and another fine actress, Julianne Moore ) in The Hours and she was the one who walked away with an Oscar ;). I’d have to agree with Fiver - she has shown rather more versatility and range than just the upper-class Ice Queen ( which she does play to a tee ).
Oh, piffle. I mean, sure, granted - but being a freak doesn’t stop me from watching Tom Cruise in film ( Far and Away did kinda suck, though ). Even poor Katie Holmes was good in Pieces of April :).
Well, fair enough. We all have actors we don’t cotton to. I think Leonardo diCaprio is talented, but he somehow creeps me out on some undefinable level. And Jan-Michael Vincent used to make me shudder with horror :p.
Leo creeps me out, too.
I doubt I’ll get much chance to see To Die For–it’s from 1995. My local video store doesn’t tend to keep older films unless they won Oscars and/or were very popular. I do wish (having looked it up) that I had seen it, since I like satire. Then again, NK seems to be ice bitch queen in TDF as well, no?
But I cannot watch Bewitched. 1. I loathe Will Ferrell and 2. I loved Elizabeth Montgomery so much that I don’t want to see anyone play her.
I liked her best in Cold Mountain. Renee Zellweger got more buzz, and she was fantastic, but the character of Ruby was custom made for chewing scenery. Kidman did just as good a job with a more understated role.
I also think Eyes Wide Shut was a high point. She managed to be dreamily seductive yet cold at the same time. Too bad the script for that movie fizzled; it was a real attention-grabber most of the way through.
I see a movie yet to be mentioned is “Malice” (1993)
Oh she is a conniving ice princess in that one, as well as “To Die For”.
Yes, she is incredibly beautiful and I know she is a natural redhead because I’ve … uh … slept with her … several times. Yeah that’s the ticket.
I trust that some of you will remember that Jon Lovitz compulsive liar character Tommy Flanagan, whom I was imitating.
I thought she was great in The Human Stain. She played beautifully off of Anthony Hopkins And she was waaaaay out of her element and pulled it off perfectly, in my opinion.
I find her positively stunning as long as she’s not wearing that godawful tight hair. That’s just NOT cuttin’ it. It doesn’t cut it with anyone, as far as I’m concerned, but on her, I just want to go up to her and loosen that fuckin’ ponytail. Sheesh.
“Dusting off her mum skills”? wth? Where are her kids? I can’t figure out if the article is trying to get a dig in re her parenting or if the “journalist” has forgotten that she has at least 2 kids already.
Agreed about the botox wax museum effect. She’s overdone.
Also, the dyed blond hair combined with naturally pale skin washes out her features making her look oh-so-bland. Exactly what the hell are fair-skinned redheads thinking when they go blond? It looks horrendous and a good majority of us pay big money to go red.
IMHO, she looked her best in Dead Calm, when she was natural and un-Hollywood.
I don’t see a film because she’s in it, I’m indifferent. I also agree about the too much botox, she’s getting scary looking. I just don’t see why we need a Nicole Kidman when we have a Cate Blanchett. Beautiful and talented and not weird enough to have ever married Tom Cruise. She’s my new girl crush.
Her current plastic looks actually seem to be an advantage as in Fur: An Completely Bogus and Inane Portrait of Someone Who Isn’t Diane Arbus. She had that so-retro-she-looks-artificial appearance.
No love for her looks in The Hours?
But, her best performance will always be as a bridesmaid in the “Bop Girl” video.
In all fairness, she was also about 23 in that movie. Hollywood tends not to like their 40 year old women to look 40.
Kidman looks good in her films, but she looks freakish in interviews. It’s kind of like when Meg Ryan went from being America’s sweetheart to “that weird lady with the grotesque lips”.
Well, I’m not about to join Netflix just to request this film. I am perfectly fine with the opinion that she shows more range in films I haven’t seen. I can only hope it’s true.
I agree re the hair and the skin–and she is very striking in her natural coloring.
I haven’t seen Meg Ryan in a long time–she has scary lips now? Gah.
