On the clock - 2008 NFL Draft

Is that the last of the top OL?

Might push the Steelers into Mendenhall. You say they don’t need an RB but they’ll take one - they want more than what Parker offers.

I’ve heard great things about Mendenhall so this really concerns me. I hope they reach for a third tier OL.

I agree. If the Steelers can get Mendenhall that’d be a good complement to Parker. They really need to find a replacement for the Bus.

Cowboys on the clock.

Thomas at 22 and Jones at 28? Trade the 22nd pick to my Bears…not likely.

Yep. I’m hoping the Pack aren’t planning on reaching for one in the first round.

Although, I’m loving the fact that Brohm and Henne are still available. The Packers might get some suitors to trade up and grab one or the other.

My dream is that Mike Jenkins continues to fall.

SenorBeef, what did Cleveland get for this pick again?

Wasn’t that the trade where they gave up a ton to get Brady Quinn?

Last OT until maybe the 3rd round. This is why the Bears couldn’t pass on the position.

I can see the Steelers looking for a guy to pair with Fast Willie, Mendenhall would be a great fit, but you don’t see many teams taking a RB in the first round when their current starter is young and was 2nd in the conference last season. Figure they might look to get a beast in the middle rounds and get one of the WRs in the first instead.

They didn’t give up a ton. They gave the 2008 #22 and the 2007 2nd rounder for the 2007 #22. Dallas wouldn’t have made that trade if they thought that’s what the result would be.

Edit: Parker is coming off an injury and is somewhat one-dimensional. I could see them going RBBC and it scares me. Unless there’s some hidden boogeyman here, it seems like he’s clearly BPA.

Cowboys take Jones as predicted. I think he’s a better match with Barber than Mendenhall even though Mendenhall is a more complete back.

ETA: The only hiccup is that Felix Jones almost certainly would have been there at 28.

If you’re a GM, what is your strategy for the draft? Are you a “best athlete available” guy, do you draft based on what position you need to fill (and pick the best player at that position), or do you make picks to counter those of your division rivals (i.e. they pick a wideout, you pick a corner)?

Okay, you’re right. I remember thinking it was going to be a much higher number in this draft before last season and how good the Browns did.

I’m pretty worried about Felix Jones going to the Cowboys. They already ran the Eagles ragged with Julius Jones, Felix Jones has to be better.

Yeah you’re right on both counts, just thought the Steelers might have greater needs, especially at WR and CB/S (hello Anthony Smith!) and both those positions are looking to be great values here.

ETA:And Mendenhall is the pick. The AFC is in deep shit.

Sigh…he will be missed, glad he’s not in the NFC North anyways.

Right, but the Lions got who they wanted anyways. Teddy Lehman actually has some skills, he’s just been injured a lot.

Can I just say Deon Sanders is STILL a complete waste of flesh? God, he is annoying as hell.

If you don’t have any glaring needs, I’d think you HAVE to take the best player available now.

If I was a GM, I’d focus primarily on my team’s most obvious primary need. If a player that fits our style falls to us, we take that player no question. Otherwise, I’m always trying to stock picks. I’d be looking to trade down and acquire extra picks, especially from teams that can’t seem to get it going or are facing big salary cap problems a year or two down the road. If I can trade a 1 for a later one and a future 1 or 2, I’d be ecstatic. I’m looking to draft my depth in later rounds, and stockpile picks for other trades and for use in really loaded drafts (unlike this one).

Time to see who’s going to get antsy and trade up to get one of the QBs remaining.

Can I say that I love that they have cut back on the pointless player interviews in between picks! Lets talk football!

Damn it.
I’ve heard some people claim he’s the best back in the draft (of course some claimed last year that Lynch was better than Peterson)… how does he drop to #23?

Gah.

People passing first round RBs because there’s enough depth to snag a good one in later rounds.

That’s the worst guy that could’ve fallen to Steelers. I was afraid the Bengals would get him 15 picks earlier.

Hey, the way DBs are sliding the Steelers might be able to get Kenny Phillips or Tyrell Johnson in the second round!

The AFC North looks to be getting really good this year.
