Last OT until maybe the 3rd round. This is why the Bears couldn’t pass on the position.
I can see the Steelers looking for a guy to pair with Fast Willie, Mendenhall would be a great fit, but you don’t see many teams taking a RB in the first round when their current starter is young and was 2nd in the conference last season. Figure they might look to get a beast in the middle rounds and get one of the WRs in the first instead.
They didn’t give up a ton. They gave the 2008 #22 and the 2007 2nd rounder for the 2007 #22. Dallas wouldn’t have made that trade if they thought that’s what the result would be.
Edit: Parker is coming off an injury and is somewhat one-dimensional. I could see them going RBBC and it scares me. Unless there’s some hidden boogeyman here, it seems like he’s clearly BPA.
If you’re a GM, what is your strategy for the draft? Are you a “best athlete available” guy, do you draft based on what position you need to fill (and pick the best player at that position), or do you make picks to counter those of your division rivals (i.e. they pick a wideout, you pick a corner)?
Yeah you’re right on both counts, just thought the Steelers might have greater needs, especially at WR and CB/S (hello Anthony Smith!) and both those positions are looking to be great values here.
ETA:And Mendenhall is the pick. The AFC is in deep shit.
Sigh…he will be missed, glad he’s not in the NFC North anyways.
If I was a GM, I’d focus primarily on my team’s most obvious primary need. If a player that fits our style falls to us, we take that player no question. Otherwise, I’m always trying to stock picks. I’d be looking to trade down and acquire extra picks, especially from teams that can’t seem to get it going or are facing big salary cap problems a year or two down the road. If I can trade a 1 for a later one and a future 1 or 2, I’d be ecstatic. I’m looking to draft my depth in later rounds, and stockpile picks for other trades and for use in really loaded drafts (unlike this one).
Damn it.
I’ve heard some people claim he’s the best back in the draft (of course some claimed last year that Lynch was better than Peterson)… how does he drop to #23?
Gah.
People passing first round RBs because there’s enough depth to snag a good one in later rounds.
That’s the worst guy that could’ve fallen to Steelers. I was afraid the Bengals would get him 15 picks earlier.
