A few years back, I read the report by a guy who wanted to see about dental costs, etc. He started out with a dentist he knew and trusted who knew what he planned to do. He had no major issues and I think one minor thing that should be fixed eventually, but nothing critical.
He then set out across the country, going to various dentists as a new patient for a preliminary exam. I don’t recall all the specifics, but he was told everything from “No problem - it all looks good” to “You need crowns on all your teeth and a deep cleaning and it’ll cost $$$$$” I believe the highest cost/most work quote was in LA, but honest and crooked seemed to be evenly spread across the country.
Moral of the story - beware and don’t be afraid to get a second or third opinion. Dentists are not universally honest.
As for today - it rained most of the night and it’s still coming down, but temps are in the 60s. Not sure what my plans are. Not sure it matters.
Y’all are reminding me I still need to call the dentist and schedule a crown. And call the nearest eye doctor to set up an exam because I might be getting towards The Time of Needing Bifocals. And find a gyno that accepts my insurance because my IUD needs replacing at the end of the year. At least I got my annual scheduled.
I turn 40 and everything starts to fall apart. I was warned.
The Irish went to Myrtle Beach yesterday so I’ve got all five cats hanging out with me full-time. They’re taking Seasonal’s dad for a beach trip because his health is failing. I trust they’ll be doing the distancing and masking but I’m still going to greet them with a dollop of medical-grade hand sanitizer when they get back.
Anyone have experience giving cats canned unsweetened pumpkin for diarrhea? Little Connor has the runs and Seasonal recommended I try that if it doesn’t get better.
Rainy morning, not too many showed up at the park.
Wussies!
I wish I had worn something warmer though, wet and 66 degrees is not too comfortable when you are wearing shorts and a t-shirt.
Molly and Roxy came this morning, Molly has some kind of cattle dog in her, first dog I’ve seen who can run faster than Urban. Molly can be a little grumpy sometimes, she doesn’t like for other dogs to play with Roxy. However, those two, and my two really had a good time together.
Stormy’s people never showed up, so I didn’t get to ask them what they thought of the house.
One of my clients used to give her cats canned pumpkin for diarrhea. I think I used to put out a heaping tablespoon full and she had 5 cats. Her cats just ate it like cat food, and it won’t hurt the ones who don’t have diarrhea, Cat.
Lawn guy is supposed to come today. I’m not sure what he plans on doing. I kind of hope he doesn’t come, I’m tired. I woke up at 3:30 and couldn’t get back to sleep until about 4:45. The alarm goes off at 5. I feel like laying around and doing nothing today.
If he does come,
I want the pocket doors to my son’s room fixed, so my son gave his room a long overdue thorough cleaning.
Have fun at the service Swampy.
Today is the first day in a long time that I got caught behind a bunch of people turning into a church parking lot. I’ve gotten very used to no traffic on Sunday mornings. I guess that is coming to an end. There are a whole lot of churches up here.
I’m doing that too. Mostly to deal with starting to get a little stir crazy with the quarantine homeboundness. Her books are the best for that. I always felt like I was in that National Park with her. Dana Stabenow’s are set in Alaska which is also interesting and she is a prolific writer so there is lots to read. Paul Doiron’s books are a game warden set in various places in Maine-interesting stuff.
True. If it is any comfort I’ve found that falling apart starts out sudden but the rate slows down quite a lot after the first 5 years or so. I’m at 70 now and nothing new has fallen off or shriveled up lately. I don’t do much self-maintenance except doctor check-ups, vision and dental check-ups. Who am I kidding, I don’t any healthy wash, wax and shine stuff; eat, drink and be merry! is my modus operandi. So far, so good.
Off my granddaughter wrangling for the day. It’s the only thing out of the house I do. My daughter, SIL and I do a really strict small bubble so it is very low virus risk. If I ever have to give up my weekly Hattie I’m going to ask if I can start a circuit visiting all you Mumpers. At each stop I will ask one of you to act like a 3 year old who is smarter than me. I figure we’ve shown that you guys are off to a good start. I’m trying to keep up.
Hope churching and cement ponding goes well for every one. I’ll have good food at my daughter’s-she’s a good cook and ultra healthy at menu planning. My SIL is excellent at his grill so grilled meat and vegetables will be involved. They keep their wine fridge full of sparkling flavored water so Hattie and I can have tea parties with her little tea set-she always pours. I have to drink fast to keep up. Popsicles often happen if it is super hot. I dribble more popsicle juice on myself than she does but what a way to go!
Afternoon, mumpers and happy Sunday! I’ve had a busy and very fun weekend but I’m tired now so today has been declared a day of sloth. I’ve been a little bit productive in that I changed the bedding when we got up so that’s in the wash now. Other than that, I have no plans.
The trip to Northampton on Friday went well, got there in reasonable time and met up with a friend (we have a ‘social bubble’ now!) to go to an outdoor acoustic gig with a couple of bands playing. One of them we’ve seen several times before and the other were new to us, I’ve had their CD for a while but not had the chance to see them play live. The pub where it happened has a massive beer garden with a custom-made marquee, and a load of tables/benches that seat six people so it was perfect for keeping your distance. We stayed overnight and went for brunch together before going our separate ways. Got home, and had cocktail night yesterday while watching a couple of films.
So today I have laundry on, and I suspect I’ll be spending the afternoon on the sofa with a good book. I have a large pile of unread stuff, mostly historical fiction and fantasy, with a few non-fiction books thrown in. And then there’s the stuff on the kindle…but today is a day for real paper books.
Morning all. Didn’t sleep well last night so I made it up by staying in bed until 0730, about 9 hours. We’ll see. Still sore from refereeing yesterday, but need to keep moving around. Nothing much planned for today, it’s heading to 89F and they say a 40% chance of rain (in reality, they haven’t a clue except when they know it won’t rain or are positive it will–the rest is a crapshoot).
Dot, I’m with everyone else, 20 grand sounds exploitive, see if there are other options, the dental school sounds good if there is one nearby.
Boo, me act as a smarter-than-average 3-year old? Ah, nope, they’d run rings around me. Enjoy dinner.
Sari, I feel like I’m getting to know all the dogs at the park. One of these days we’ll need you to give us a list of names/types just to keep up.
Shoe, enjoy the rat relocation.
OK, have retrieved the Sunday paper, on to the day. Have a good Sunday all.
After no raccoon sightings all day, Mrs. L.A. said I should button up the hatch around 10:30 or 23:00 last night. She held the flashlight, and I put the excluder on. Shortly after, she came inside to say she saw four raccoons crossing the yard.
Half past six of the clock. I think I’ll make SOB for breakfast in a couple of hours.
cat, while not a cat, I’ve given my (15#) dog a tablespoon of pumpkin for diarrhea. I’m not sure if it was the pumpkin or just a short lived belly bug, but it firmed things up. In any case, it was something nutritious and fairly bland. He likes it (tastes a bit like sweet potatoes, which he loves in raw form), so I have made a few treats with a pumpkin base from a recipe I found on Pinterest.
Up, caffeinating and fixing to do KP. Other than the usual Sunday chores, not a lot on the agenda today.
Up earlier than I want to be. Can’t even blame DH, the cat, or the neighbors, either. Two grocery deliveries on the agenda before 12noon, then might just sleep a lot if possible. It’s going to be a busy week, need to rest up.
Not even 7:15am yet, and it’s in the mid-80s, with up to a 40% chance of rain. Ugh. Predicted highs are triple-digit for over a week yet.
Dot, add me to the chorus suggesting a dental school.
Boo, I actually was a smarter-than-average three-year-old, but my earliest memories are from when I was four so I don’t remember how to do it.
Can’t remember if anybody mentioned Sherlock Holmes upthread. Misty Lackey has been writing a fantasy series set in the latr 1800s; most of the books are inspired by fairy tales, but the last four have included John and Mary Watson as major characters. (Holmes makes a brief appearaance or few in each book, but he’s still in hiding while the rest of Moriarty’s gang are rounded up.) I’ve thoroughly enjoyed the books, and am hoping she’ll write more.
70 and mostly cloudy out, with a predicted high of only 71. <happy dance> On the other hand, there’s a 60% chance of rain, increasing to 70% tonight. 75 tomorrow, and then back up into the 80s…
Fed and working on caffeinatiion; first load of laundry should be ready to go into the dryer now. Would like to get something done in the yard before the sky starts falling, but that probably won’t happen.
I couldn’t say, because the clippers I bought are labeled in mm only and don’t have the typical English guard sizes. I used something between a 5-6 on top (5 is 16 mm, 6 is 19 mm; I used an 18 mm guard) and a 4-5 on the sides, but after some clean-up on the back of my neck, got the wrong guard back on and wound up having to go very tight on the sides to even it out. I’m not unhappy with it, it’s just not the beautiful fade I was working toward.
Up, caffeinated, and sheveled. Off today, so i shall do a load of clothes, and shevel the apartment. Gordie started to whine about going out right while I was cooking breakfast, then had to be dragged out the door when I was finished. He almost tripped me with his leash, and plowed into a parked car. Alex Catt tried to leap on my desk, and missed, but got 1 claw into the back of my hand, so now I’m 1/4 way to a set of Stgmata. Anybody want fuzzy morons? I’ll ship.
Read that as seared tuna dinner and kittens
Cats, I was falling apart more at 30 than I am at 49.5. : knocks on Gordie’s head :
I went all over town trying to find unsweetened pumpkin for Connor. Apparently everybody’s pet has the runs right now because there was nothing except Libby Libby Libby pie mix which is very much not unsweetened. Guess I’ll add some to my Walmart order for tomorrow.
Well, dang. Yesterday I started having a pain in the vicinity of my upper left back tooth. Actually, there’s not a tooth there anymore-- I already had a crown, and then a few years ago, the tooth behind the crown got magically (HA! $3,900 worth of magic out of pocket, no insurance) turned into an implant. The pain seems to be right between the two. It’s that pain that feels like an exposed nerve… like when you suck in air and it stings. Rats. I’m going to have to call the dentist tomorrow.
Other than that, got up early (5 am) and walked at 7. Had my coffee and toast and been perusing the web. Nothing scheduled today. Did laundry yesterday as I do every Saturday morning.
My life’s currently pretty uneventful- I picked some blackberries in the local park yesterday, today I haven’t even made it outside.
At least the weather’s cooling down now, so I may actually be able to sleep at night and have energy during the day, which would be nice- it’s been so hot 'n humid it’s felt like having a warm drink every time I breathed for the last few days…
Weather’s ambiguous at best at this point today. Still warm and humid, mostly with dark clouds and wind, occasional sun.
Both grocery orders arrived slightly before the specified 10-noon window, but not enough to be a problem. Still gotta go out for a couple of items that were out of stock at the Walmart that delivered to me, and I’m at a loss as to why the Instacart guy thought one can of corned beef hash was a reasonable substitution for the specified four cans of roast beef hash. I did approve the corned-for-roast substitution when placing the order, but I’m baffled by the quantity adjustment. No communication on supply issues to explain it.
Howdy Y’all! We survived deheathenization this mornin’. Well, OYKW survived one and I survived two. One kinda curious thing is that there were more folks at the first service than the second. I would’ve thought that would be the other way around. Anywho, all went well, IMO. I got back to da cave, changed into shorts and tshirt and assisted with gettin’ N.O.L. ready which we then et. Nappage occurred afterwards. Not goin’ to the cee-mint pond cause 'tis all cloudy out. Little to no chance of rain predicted so we shall see what happens.
Dots count me in with the get another quote or if possible find a dental school. That is way excessive!
BBBOOO I’m not sure I can do a three year old, but eight year old boy is a specialty here.
BooFae glad y’all had a good time.
Cat yep. Forty is fatal. You will begin havin’ aches and pains in places you did not even know you had.
Afternoon all. The Texas Roadhouse provided dinner (11 oz. Sirloin, Steak fries and Salad w/ranch washed down with sweet tea and water with three rolls) so I am agreeably stuffed. It’s 91F outside, so not motivated to head out again anytime soon.
swampy, glad services went well.
Thel, first Dot now you. Hope tooth problems don’t come in threes…
doggio, ah, but what would you do for entertainment if you didn’t have the fuzzy morons??
