Once Upon A Time - Season 5

Season 5 starts tonight!

As they’ve done in the past, there is an hour-long review/preview special that airs tonight before the first episode.

I’m not even going to try to give a full recap of the end of last season. Things got all crazy with the alternate reality, evil characters were good and good characters were evil, dogs and cats living together!

Ultimately, the darkness was removed from the dying Gold/Rumple and it got loose in Storybrooke. Emma sacrificed herself to the darkness to save Regina and the season ended with a shot of The Dark One’s dagger now displaying the name ‘Emma Swan.’

Oh, yeah, there was mention last season of Merlin being The Sorcerer, so I’m guessing he will play a part this season. From one promo I saw, I think we’ll be seeing Ariel (the mermaid) again. I’d love to see Red back as a recurring character.

Which big Disney characters have we not seen ? They haven’t done Aladdin and Jasmine yet, have they?

I think I saw mention of Camelot, Arthur, the sword in the stone, which would go with Merlin.

Ah, of course–Merida. First Pixar character in OUAT? The actress was okay–not great, but okay. But her dialogue was terrible. It was basically all “Remember me from the movie with the bears?” without actually showing us any of her backstory.

For most of the episode I was thinking, “Emma actually looks a lot better like this.” She was in the woods with kind of wild hair and a more natural look. Then, ‘six weeks later,’ we get Evil Emma with white hair in a bun and bright red lipstick. :smack:

Man, this show likes to play around with time jumps!

A disappointing start. Didn’t we already do villains who are heroes? I guess we’re just reversing that.

I wasn’t impressed. It’s definitely not appointment tv, but not so bad I have to turn it off. I don’t know what is missing, but something’s not clicking.

‘i’m so mad at you all and will punish you for the things you did to me that I made you forget!’

I grew tired of this show mid last season, and its a bad sign when the commercials are better.

My favorite line was when the voice of the Dark One/Rumple said that he couldn’t understand Merida’s Scottish accent.

I imagine that usher in the movie theater is Merlin.

I liked it until the end. Oh, it’s six weeks later and they lost their memory. Hmm, sounds kind of familiar. I was Lukewarm the first time they did it, and it’s very annoying that they’re doing it again.

Usually I’ll start a season doubtful it will be good, and it ends up being fairly decent. This season I started out hopeful but lost it at the ending and at the preview for the next episode.

I did like the shout out about the dwarves missing all the adventures. I would like to see the giant again from the Jack and the Beanstalk arc, and you’re right, we haven’t seen Aladdin and Jasmine yet. So Jafar can be another villain! I also heard Ruby is coming back.

I love this show. It’s definitely appointment TV for me.

So it looks like Merlin’s first love being killed by the Dark One is true. From a certain point of view.

^In a Darth Vader kind of way.

This week we saw the return of Ruby! Yay! I should have seen it coming when we first saw the wolf–but it didn’t occur to me at all so the shift surprised me.

Merida has grown on me. I didn’t like her introduction in her first episode, but I’ve liked her more the more we see of her. And there was some good costuming/makeup to make some of her clansmen in this episode look like the characters from the movie.

With Ruby, Mulan, and Merida teaming up… that’s some nice eye candy!

Sometimes it annoys me, but generally the way the show alternates between the past and present storylines (with additional flashbacks thrown in for good measure) is used to good effect.

My main complaint this season is not enough Rumple. Maybe he’ll have a bigger role in the second half of the season.

Yeah. That was the joke.

Also, nice that they referenced Tiny and his attempts to grow more magic beans.

The dream catcher thing is kind of hokey.

I liked Merida’s witch. Her hair reminded me a bit of Yubaba in Spirited Away.

Aladdin vs Jafar was a key part of Once Upon A Time In Wonderland

Jafar was the main villain, but Aladdin wasn’t there at all.
