One Song

…which led me to Death Cab for Cutie and “Grapevine Fires”.

Neo-psychadelic club music by Charlatans UK, “The Only One I Know”. It’s a love-it-or-hate-it genre, I think. I’m a fan of the wall of sound and the throwback keyboard/organ in the mix.

Turn it up. Burn a spliff if you’re so inclined. Take some X. Dance or stare at your shoes. (Now we know what my college years were like…)

“The Patient Ferris Wheel” introduced me to The Gaslight Anthem. Not very often do you like every single one of a band’s songs. From their first 3 albums anyway, I don’t care much for “Handwritten”. (Sorry no link, can’t get YouTube at work.)

Shovels and Rope - Gasoline

Sburban Jungle (Percussion Ensemble)

The original is great too, but if I only get one link…

King Crimson - “The Night Watch”

Easily the best song ever written about a Rembrandt painting

Newest singer/songwriter to capture my attention: George Ezra - Budapest.

When I heard this song on the radio the last thing I expected was this slim young English lad. His other songs, *Blame It On Me *and Did You Hear the Rain (to name two) also showcase his incredible voice.

I’m on a Rodrigo Y Gabriela kick right now so, Hanuman. Gabriela Quintero is also mucha caliente and makes my pathetic attempts to play guitar look truly sad.

I would sound like a broken record (pun intended) if I post my very favorite again on these boards, so I’ll change it up and mention “The Ballad of Lucy Jordan” by Marianne Faithfull.

I don’t understand it (it’s in Japanese), but the singer has a great voice:

“Shizuku” by Kagrra,.

Shatter by Shelleyan Orphan. Just perfect dream pop.

I like The Church too, but Under The Milky Way is, for me, a much more interesting song. It’s one of those “I remember where I was when I first heard it” type of songs.

A lovely piece to be sure, but I’ll see that and raise you the third movement of his sonata no. 14 (the ‘Moonlight’, Op. 27 No. 2), played by Daniel Barenboim. Yes, the third movement - his rendition of the first movement has never been bettered, of course, and is great in itself, but the third is sheer pianistic brilliance, and unsullied by hideous muzak versions.

Statesboro Blues. There are many great versions (Taj Mahal, Alice Stuart, and, of course, Blind Willie McTell), but my favorite is the one by the Allman Brothers Band.

The Grateful Dead - Ripple

Very catchy new song from The New Pornographers - War on the East Coast

I could give a different answer every day of the year (for the next several years), but for today, I’ll say "Clouds"by the Jayhawks.

Modest Mouse - Dramamine

We Live Together by New Palace Talkies

Trivia - former flatmates of the above mentioned George Ezra. Different feel though.

You Go Down Smooth - Lake Street Dive.
