Right now I am totally in love with Renegade, by Styx. Love-love-love-love.
Just one?! Jeez.
OK, let’s let iTunes decide. The song with the highest play count at the moment is Flyby Blind Guardian. Not only is it ironically awesome for a heavy metal band to be singing about Peter Pan, but there’s a point about two thirds of the way through that always triggers an emotional reaction. (In context, from 2:55 to 4:10, peaking at 3:37).
Ooh, and this lets me cheat, because Dead Sound of Misery is the same song remixed, and with different lyrics. Hah!
Octarine, it would be fun if you could also give some brief “hated/loved” feedback ![]()
Here’s my oddball…Danielle Dax - “Id Parade”. Much of her stuff blends India-flavored sounds with great electro-pop hooks.
Red Wanting Blue - Finger in the Air
Honestly, I love these guys. They often say that they are from Columbus, Ohio, but they formed in Athens, which is right near where I grew up and currently live. I remember listening to them from a very young age – Velveteen was released when I was 10. I think that over the years, they have remained my favorite bands. Check out other things by them if you like it, but this one is one of my favorites.

That’s one of my favorite songs from Southern Rock Opera. Here’s one from Brighter Than Creation’s Dark.
“A Ghost To Most” by Drive-By Truckers
Love both of those. On a related note:
Jason Isbell, “Songs That She Sang In the Shower”
I can’t get the damn link to work.
To me, Tribal Seeds represents the best of what’s being done with Reggae these days. While some modern Reggae acts tend more toward hip-hop than I like (Capleton, for example), and others lean more toward alternative rock than I like (Iration, for example), Tribal Seeds has struck the perfect balance between honoring the roots of Reggae while still making it sound current.
I also love the line:
“Sinsemilla is a gift from Jah,
I will not follow your man-made law,
Me nah cause no trouble with Jah herb in me pipe,
Yes me fire up and yes me feel all right.”
“Bridge to Nowhere” by Sam Roberts has been a favourite of mine for awhile. I often feel like I can identify with that feeling of being stuck in life, and wanting a better life.
Bonus point: cool video to go with the song.
Bonus point #2: It has a time signature of 6/4 (it’s in 6 instead of on 2 or 4 or 3), which won’t mean much to most people, but it’s unusual and I like unusual stuff like that.
I could go with my namesake, but that would be foolish.
Ok, mushy time…
I love Kermit the Frog’s Rainbow Connection from the Muppet Movie. For three minutes the simple pleasure of a simple song fills the world with hope, dreams, and the realization that maybe, just maybe, wishes can come true.
Somebody’s already mentioned an Eva Cassidy song, but my favorite is Over the Rainbow.
My one favorite song changes frequently but lately I’ve rediscovered the Beach Boys and am groovin’ on I Can Hear Music:
The Scottish group Big Country (I get the irony) recorded an eponymous song.
Here is Big Country, by Big Country. I absolutely love the way that they make the guitars sound like bagpipes: it’s a wonderful song.
Come to think of it my last post about The Church also had some bagpipy sounding guitars. My dad played the pipes. I might be biased. ![]()
Sorry for the double post, but Midnight Oil’s “Blue Sky Mine” is also a great favourite of mine.
