I think a lot of the problem is with his level of intelligence. He actually thinks that the invasion of Iraq prevented terrorist attacks, even though there is zero evidence that Iraq was ever involved in terrorist attacks to begin with. I think Mensa will be denying his application.
In the hilbilly thread, he probably thought that those undocumented persons would clearly and easily be proven citizens. The continuing discussion shows that’s not necessarily the case, but he can’t keep up, so he just dismisses the idea.
I really can’t even figure out what is point is in the Columbus thread. If you are the “first” to climb a mountain, you better not find “Kilroy was here” painted on the summit.
It looked to me like he was being a jerk, by the boards definition. He also started the **Tuba ** thread last week that looked like a careful trolling attempt. I did not notice the connection until I started looking at his recent posts. In the past I had not noticed him, perhaps he is building up to a flame out rather than renew? I notice he joined in October.
This isn’t directed to *Operation Ripper himself, since I have no iron in this fire, but in a general sense:
I find this whole “you can look that up on google in .04 seconds” business to be rather tiresome, not to mention IMO it defeats the purpose of General Questions. Sure, I could probably dig around google for a few hours and find out how to compute an NFL quarterback’s passer rating, but by asking on the SDMB I get the information faster, and from someone who knows where to look.
So, for my money, posting in GQ with the statement “you can easily find that on google” is neither helpful nor in the spirit of fighting ignorance.
HeyHomie, what you mentioned is what annoyed me to start with. I thought a small chiding might elicit some additional information, instead it elicited a misdirected attack.
I thought in the Columbus thread he was A) being a bit of a dick (I throw in “a bit” to be polite), B) either completely wrong and ignorant or. . . well, yeah. I mean, holy hegemony and implied consent! It’s not like South American culture is like 90s Norwegian death metal kids getting into a Samhain worship revival, or menopausal women in Simi Valley getting into Gaia.
Well, technically, there, he didn’t dismiss interest in the blogger with a rollyeyes smiley…he dismissed calling the Iraq war stupid with a rollyeyes smiley.
I stand corrected, but his other posts in the thread were pretty jerkish. In fact of the three threads I linked to, that is the only one that got mod attention. I think he was bigger ass in the other threads.
Thank you so much for starting this, What Exit? I was just considering Pitting him myself for his stupidity in the South American thread. He clearly hasn’t a jot of actual knowledge about the region, but feels he can be condescending to others about their remarks.
He also accused me of “running away” from him in that thread just 8 minutes after my previous post.
Operation Ripper is one of those posters who combines remarkable stupidity with arrogance, always a delightful combination. I’ve noticed his obnoxiousness for some time, but he seems to be getting much worse lately.
For what it is worth, I invited him to this pitting and he posted several times after my posted invitation, so if anyone was “running away” I think we could establish more proof that it was Ripper.
They seem to pop up from somewhere every once in a while, with the presumed persona of a hard-nosed and hairy-chested conservative sneering at the liberals while scratching his balls. Are we on some kind of list?
He’s been Pitted before for jerkish behavior. The first time I noticed him was due to the behavior described in this Pit thread from last April, which began in this thread.
I’m just relieved to learn that my thread wasn’t the only one **Operation Ripper ** had difficulties with. I’d been concerned that I might have unintentionally antagonized a hillbilly. Granted, I suppose that’s still a possibility, but at least my OP wasn’t the only target. I’d hate to be the sole recipient of the mountain folk’s ire; by all accounts, they can hold a grudge like nobody’s business. Although I believe I did read something about the Hatfields and McCoys finally settling their differences recently, which is an encouraging sign.
