I read it about six months ago, so I’m not going to swear to it – but my recollection is that they encountered each other briefly while they were both in transit between prisons.
Well I’m dying to see how the Pornstache/Cute Guard/Hispanic girl (I’ve already forgotten their names!) thing works out. I’m rooting for a happy ending. I got so engrossed in these stories after semi-binge-watching Season 1 it’s been a tough slog these past few weeks!
I’ve seen hints in the media that Crazy Eyes’ back story is going to be revealed. We had a taste of it in Season 1 with her older white parents visiting her. So intriguing.
Some of the characters behave in stereotypical ways, but we’re allowed to know them as people. I think that forgives most of the stereotyping. And I hope that Sophia will be back. Her story is so interesting, to explore what would happen with a family in such a situation.
She and Alex and Alex’s sister were cellmates for a while, awaiting testimony in the main dealer’s trial. I read it on a layover and gave it to the flight attendant on the flight.
I figure Pennsatucky will have new teeth, as a result of the beating. I love that the last time I saw that actress was on SAMCRO as Half-Sack’s gf that ended up sleeping with Clay.
Report from three eps in – yes, it is at least as good as the first season, and it might in fact be better.
There are a couple of sex scenes that really rock …
oh, great character development, too. Did I mention the character development? Cause it’s really great!
I agree. It took me a while to enjoy the show because for the first five episodes or so, it just seemed so cliche with all the scary loud black people. And just because it may be better than most doesn’t mean it still doesn’t lean heavy on the stereotypes. Like Sophia as the hairdresser. (And her name was Vanessa in the book. I like that name better!)
But I just remind myself that prisonlife encourages people to behave in stereotypical ways, as a survival tactic.
I haven’t read any reviews, other than this, and haven’t seen any of Season 2 yet. I have my predictions about how Season 2 starts after the end of Season 1…
Piper beat up Pennsatucky. I think that Pennsatucky will not press charges because[ul][]A small part of Pennsatucky would think that she got beat fair and square.[]A larger part wants Piper out of Solitary so that Pennsatucky can try again sometime to kill her.Pennsatucky will get new teeth due to the beating (as Poysyn wrote here first) and so be grateful - and this will increase her hate because she doesn’t want to feel obligated.[/ul]Healy won’t report her because he doesn’t want to be implicated in allowing it and also wants Pennsatucky, or himself, or anyone else, to have more shots at Piper. Piper in Solitary is dramatically boring and allows no one to get to her.
Is there any way we could do individual threads for each episode? Due to the very nature of the way that netflix releases it, everyone’s going to watch at a different rate and it will be almost impossible to be unspoiled unless you wait until you’re done with the whole season to open the thread.
Sure – feel free.
I myself just finished ep. 8 and am having a “can you fucking believe it” moment. Anyone else who’s gotten that far will know what I’m talking about.
I’m on episode 6, now I can’t wait for episode 8.
I just watched episode 8 and I guess I was expecting something much bigger. Although it was a good episode. It suck’s… only 4 episodes left.
We watched the first ep last night - I gotta say, I did not expect season 2 to start that way or for the 1st ep to end that way. Can’t wait to see more - we’ll probably do an ep a night just because there’s not a lot else worth watching and we don’t want to OD.
Okay, not huge – but I was referring more to how that happened, and what it said about the person who made that decision, rather than that it happened at all.
And, I did in fact complete it last night, and have a review roiling around that I’ll get at least one draft done of today.
What blows my mind is the intricacy of the plotting – there is no extraneous BS in this show, everything ends up tying together at multiple levels.
I just finished the third episode. I’ve noticed that the flashbacks are deeper this time, explaining not just the crimes, but the entire characters.
Suzanne’s story has been the saddest of them all. A true alien if there ever was one. I predict we’re going to find out that she’s the only person there who is completely innocent.
And who knew Taystee was a math genius! But I sense some trouble coming with the re-insertion of Vee back into her life. And I’m intrigued by Vee’s prior history with Red, which must have been *way * back since she was in Taystee’s life for a good while. Red must be doing some serious time if she goes all the way back to those days. And did we ever find out why she is in prison?
Bitter Piper is a contrast from last season. I’m finding her more likeable now. “I’m not your Meadow”. Ha!
Yeah, Brook has taken over as the naive character, though her complete inability to STFU takes a different form than Piper’s.
Not really, but we know she was in with the Russian mob and they were using her bakery to stash dead bodies. Which I think is a violation of health codes ?
I think the show is well made, and interesting but I go through times during which I need my entertainment not to be so challenging. After the last episode of season one I had decided not to continue watching.
But a friend of mine is a background actor in episode 1 of season two. I wanted to at least watch that one so my “hey I saw you on my TV” congratulations would be timely. I ended up watching the whole season in two sittings.
Watching at that rate I don’t watch the opening credits very thoroughly. I did glance up I’d say about midway through the season and noticed “Guest starring Laverne Cox.” Does that mean the role (Sophia) is being cut back, or that Laverne Cox was able to negotiate a better position in the credit line up?
Some comments I’d only make to someone I was sure had seen the whole season:
I wanted to like the nun more than I did at the end.
Polly and Larry? Not grooving on that twist. Will we see them in the third season? Do we even know if there will be a third season ?
I feel like Daya was more visibly pregnant at the end of the previous season than in this season.
Mrs. Healey makes me sad.
Gwendee:
I think that’s intentional. There are no “good” or “bad” characters on this show – even the ones we like, like Morelli – well, they’re all in prison for a reason, and that reason is usually that they’ve done some fucked up stuff.
And, yeah, arbitrary and soapish. Definitely the weakest plotline.
I don’t recall that – she didn’t really start looking pregnant to me till the end of this season, which is only about 6 weeks – Xmas --> Valentine’s Day – after the end of last season. YMMV.
And Healy makes me sad, also. He, perhaps alone among all the characters, really does seem to be trying to become a better person.
Speaking of Red, could someone please refresh my memory on a scene with her?
What happened to Red after she punched the breast of the boss’s wife and ruptured her implant? I can’t remember correctly if that’s when she started getting the ultra-cold shoulder from the other women, or if something else happened to her.
