**gwendee **- thanks for the link. Interesting take on the series!
I thought Pennsatucky’s evolution seemed to happen a little too quickly. Although having the shit beaten out of her by someone presumed to be a yuppie creampuff would certainly teach her some humility, her change from judgmental fundamentalist to someone who would befriend Big Boo and let Sophia (whom she had previously called an “abomination”) cut her hair seemed too rapid.
As for season three speculation, I’m looking forward to backstories on Boo, Soso, Leanne, Flaca and Maritza. Because these characters are frequently used as comic relief, I’m sure their stories will be especially tragic.
I don’t think it’s the getting the holy shit kicked out of her so much as her laundry room methfriends puzzling out that life sans Boss Pensatucky was 100% better that was the instrument of her latest conversion. I don’t think prison’s something you want to go through alone. Even if you have The Jesus.
That and maybe possibly she was nudged a little bit by Healy’s new age bullshit - but there I actually think it *hindered *her growth since it seemed like just another outlet for her to boss people around and feel important. She didn’t seem to really think about anything that was said.
ETA : plus, don’t forget that it was a two-way move : Pensatucky edged towards Big Boo because she was desperate for a friend, Big Boo edged towards anybody because she, too, was fresh out of friends. If anything, “Big Boo the smart, diesel lesbian” being willing to speak word one to the meth-addled religious freak is even weirder than the other way aroud ![]()
But speaking of Big Boo, and maybe people who have read the book can field that one : what the hell was up with Little Boo ? Maybe I missed something back in season one, but it seemed to come right out of left field. Like, “Oh, and this inmate gets to have a service dog. Because”. What did she do to get it, and why is she training a new service dog/caring for an old one in the first place ?
I don’t remember Big Boo from the book.
there are programs where inmates train service dogs. The inmates have lots of free time to work with the dogs and they bond with something that loes them unconditionally which in my opinon is something a lot of peorple who are locked up have never had.
It was a little too neat and quick to be convincing, but it wasn’t because it was out of character for her. Don’t forget that Pennsatucky’s religiosity was always BS. She only believed it because she’s too stupid to pretend to believe something without actually convincing herself, and she believes anything if it stokes her ego. She lost her cult followers, so she was prepared to believe anything if it gave her some semblance of power or authority. Healy says the lesbians are secretly taking over the world? Well, sign her up!
Am I the only one who’s pissed off that Figueroa apparently got off with a forced resignation? I really wanted to see her get taken away by Marshals like Pornstache.
It was, and I also loved than montage of Piper responding to people’s well meaning comments. And the elderly aunt that thought she was in Africa.
I don’t think the producers care about the state/federal distinction much. Notice all the references to “Department of Corrections” instead of the Federal Bureau of Prisons.
Nicely demonstrated by the scene with the Black nurse doing her hair.
Actually I think Healy would approve of stuff like make-up because it fits nicely into his idea of gender roles and appropriate feminine behaviour.
I’m quite sure the repercussions of the Fig story will be playing out in S3.
That’s all she got off with officially. What about her having to kneel before a man she despised and give him a blowjob to save her career? Sure, it was her idea, but came from desperation … and it didn’t work. It was pure comeuppance. Granted, she has a LOT more to answer for than treating Baldguy Plantlover like dirt, but as has been suggested, Season 3 might have something to say about that.
About the Mendez/Bennett/Daya baby story arc, no one seems to be aware that a simple paternity test will prove that Mendez is not the father. No, Daya is not going to ride off into the sunset with lots of government money because Mendez “raped” her. I don’t understand why anyone can consider this as a longterm option.
I guess they had to come up with a plan before Daya started showing, so I understand from that perspective. I sure hope she gets some prenatal care in season three. I don’t see how this can work out for Bennett at all.
Also, let’s talk about Nicky! She is one of my favorite characters. I hope we get to see some of her backstory next season. I sure wish Sophia would do something with her hair for one episode at least. I am not looking forward to her doing the heroin, though. I sense that will be on tap for next season.
I spent the whole weekend starting on Thursday binge watching both seasons. I had started the first but hadn’t seen but three episodes. I am not sure I am a fan of them uploading all of the second season all at once. I guess that is my fault, though. I should have taken it more slowly so I could process it more slowly.
I know this post is all over the place, but I agree with those who don’t feel like Suzanne’s parents are racists. I feel like they were wholly unprepared to deal with having a child of another race and were negligent in not finding ways to remedy that. I think they ignored lots of signs out of ignorance and hubris. They said their biological child was a miracle, and I think that by having their own child, they were even less equipped to deal with Suzanne’s issues. I feel like Suzanne’s problems stem from more than just being raised in a white environment, though. In addition to other possible issues, I think she is somewhere on the autism spectrum. I am impressed with her coping mechanisms. Somehow I think her parents may have been able to help her find those. Her parents were woefully ill-equipped to deal with her issues but I don’t feel like it was because they were racists.
This was Daya’s mother’s idea. Neither of these women are the sharpest knives in the drawer or known for their longterm planning.
I think Fig will find a way to use her husband’s new political office to exact some sort of revenge on Caputo. I agree that she’s slime; but sometimes criminals do get away with their crimes.
I think there was a little of Nicky’s backstory in season one. I’m hoping in season three (and any subsequent seasons), they’ll revisit some of the characters they’ve already covered. Like many in this thread, I’d like to learn more about Suzanne.
Even if he wins the election I doubt a state senator would have much pull over a federal prison.
Yeah Bennett is screwed, but at least Mendez isn’t going to get off if/when the truth comes out. He’s already admitted to having sex with Daya; and the penalty is the same whether she’s pregnant or not. I do wonder how it’ll play out. Maybe Mendez’s relatives try to get custody once the baby’s born; what with mommy and “daddy” both being federal inmates. Or somebody finally pays attention what half the inmates are gossiping about.
And apparently it wasn’t even that good of a blowjob. I expected Caputo to make some kind of snappy comeback telling her to ask her husband for pointers.
I hope Caputo did more than just turn everything over to the warden; otherwise it’s too easy cover it up. I’m sure the GAO and assorted anti-government waste Congress-members would be thrilled to get their hands on it.
I have read that Mary Steenburgen (sp?) has signed on to play Mendez’s mother, so I do fear his family makes a play for Daya’s baby. Which makes me scream, “DNA test!!” even louder.
I hate to sound like a cold-hearted bitch, but I think the baby should go to his family. I like Daya and all, but the girl and her family are dysfunctional.
Oh, you’re only saying that because they’re in prison.
Thank you, Ranger Jeff ! I was reading the half of the thread I hadn’t seen before and was waiting for someone to say this !
This would fit in with Suzanne’s adoptive parents feeling like they were doing her such a favor, rescuing her from a life of depravity. It might not be a “race” thing but, it is a prejudice thing. This adoption would have taken place during the supposed “Crack Baby Epidemic”. It was presumed at that time, that they would not develop correctly and possibly have mental illness issues. That makes me think that they did the best the could with what they got and possibly didn’t try to have any of her “quirks” fixed. She would just be what ever she ended up being. She may have had mental illness that was separate from the crack issue, that may not have been addressed because, after all she was “just” a crack baby never gonna make anything of herself.
I hope we find out more in Season 3 - so we can quit armchair quarterbacking :0)
Someone mentioned the locks in socks. That is pretty realistic. My ex was in prison and they bought their locks from the commissary. You’d think that built in lockers with combination locks in them would be an option, but it must cost too much. It’s probably easier to move prisoners from cell to cell if they just move their trunk with them. The guards could cut locks off a trunk, to get into them faster when doing searches.
I had a feeling from the first time I saw Lorna driving Miss Rosa to her chemo appointments - that one or both of them were going to end up stealing the van. The second Vee stepped out of the end of the tunnel I knew what was going to happen. I think I woke the neighbors hollering so loud !
I also think it’s unrealistic that Daya keeps objecting that the baby will be confused or something because Bennett “isn’t the baby’s real father.” What 3-year-old do you know that demands to know if the father figure in his home is his actual real flesh-and-blood dad? Or why would is come up even later? And besides, Bennett actually is the father! So why does Pornstache have to be the picture in their future family life at all? I’m you’re mom, he’s your dad, we met in prison, the end.
Observation #2: Vee screwing her de facto foster son was one of the squickiest things I’ve ever sat through.
