Oscar Best Picture elimination thread

My bad. Lost it in the typography.

All Quiet on the Western Front
Mutiny on the Bounty
Gone with the Wind
Rebecca
Casablanca
The Best Years of Our Lives
All the King’s Men
From Here to Eternity
On the Waterfront
Ben-Hur
Lawrence of Arabia
The French Connection
The Godfather
One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest

Take Rebecca off the list. Joan Fontaine is such a sap.

I love that film. But I have to agree that Casablanca & Gone with the Wind are better representatives of the Oldie Chick Flicks With a Bit more to Them genre! :stuck_out_tongue:

For the fantastic BYoOL, that’s your fault, not the film’s.

But AtKM has outstayed its welcome.

Not a question of fault AG - just suggesting that some older films may stay there cause no one has seen them. Most Dopers are under 40 after all. (sadly I’m not)

Ben-Hur has a fantastic action sequence and some really hambone acting. Goodbye Charlton…sorry.

You sure about that?

Oops - should have said under 50 - & I’m still not under that!

Well, it was a pretty good and genre-defining film for its time, but no way is The French Connection the best picture out of all these. Bye.

Well, if nobody else will do it, i’ll remove Gone With The Wind.

I am amazed Cuckoos Nest has made it this far. Good performances, but I felt the movie really watered down the book. Specifically, it removed the fun psychadelic angles that made the book so fascinating to me. Boot it!

Mutiny on the Bounty is a great picture, but it is not gonna win, so a preemptive strike.

Best Years of Our Lives MUST stay. That movie blew me away at age 5 when I watched it on the late show. Amazing movie.
But I’ll happily make On the Waterfront no longer a contender… I’m afraid it’s personal prejudice. I don’t like boxing (so much I never bothered to see Rocky in any of its many variations).

here’s where we are:

All Quiet on the Western Front
Casablanca
The Best Years of Our Lives
From Here to Eternity
Lawrence of Arabia
The Godfather
Time to get rid of From Here To Etrnity. It hasn’t aged well, and seems kind of corny and cliched now.

All Quiet on the Western Front
Casablanca
The Best Years of Our Lives
Lawrence of Arabia
The Godfather
Of these… “The Best Years of Our Lives” is the weakest link, even though it’s a very good film.

Bye Frederic, Harold and Hoagy.

<Deep breath> I’m going to nominate the Godfather. I don’t think a film where a lot of the dialogue is unintelligble should win.

I’ll respectfully disagree with Hobostew about Cuckoo’s Nest. I saw it again last year & thought it was amazing.& this time round as an adult I felt the full menace of Louise Fletcher’s softspoken performance.

I’m going to have to unilaterally veto you on The Godfather. That’s clearly meant to be the winner.

If there are veto powers then Gone With the Wind should come back. Abby-Emma-Sasha didn’t give a reason for its removal :stuck_out_tongue:

To me the obvious winner is Casablanca - but I’ve never seen Lawrence.

I was going to vote for The Godfather before maplekiwi beat me to it. So, I veto the veto and vote it back out.

Leaving:

All Quiet on the Western Front
Casablanca
Lawrence of Arabia

ETA: Re: The Godfather - it’s an incredibly overrated movie. Good, but not as great as a lot of people seem to think.

Astorian voted Best Years Off on his last post., Justin.

So, then there were 3!
