Oscar Best Picture elimination thread

Yeah, I fixed it. I didn’t see that in time.

I’ve only seen two of the final three. I’ll have to watch All Quiet someday.

Yes, I’m going to have to bow out now. I’ve seen All Quiet but I very long time ago. I don’t remember it well enough to say whether it deserves to stay or go. Casablanca I love, but I’ve never seen Lawrence. ( & I’m embarrassed about that)

This might sound blasphemous, but I think Casablanca sucks. I’ve tried to watch it like three times and have literally fallen asleep every time. I find it boring and interminable, and the acting is classic old Hollywood cornball. I’d been leaving it out of respect because I know that others love it, but now that all my favorites are gone, I’m giving it the heave ho.

Wings is a great film.

If I only have one vote, it has to go for Schindler’s List. What an offensive piece of dreck. And since some truly timeless masterpieces have been kicked to the curb, I’m going to stand by my vote despite any defense this piece of crap gets.

Hint: the film agrees with you.

On preview: What Archive Guy said.

Dang, beaten to the punch. OK then, ***Gone with the Wind ***is gone with the wind.

All Quiet on the Western Front, because it’s not quite as good as Lawrence.

& we have our winner! I’ll see it - some day!

Some of the last remaining pictures that you might not have seen are really worthwhile. Wings, for one. Breathtaking action and devastating drama – oh, and Gary Cooper!

Lawrence of Arabia! So did that win because nobody’s seen it, or because it’s less annoying than other films, or less overrated than other films?

Maybe because most Dopers are in cold climates right now, and it’s nice to think of being in the desert. Ahhhhhhhhh. Dry heat.

IMHO, Casablanca is the greatest American movie ever, although it certainly has some tough competitors to the claim.

Out of the ones I’ve seen, I was going for Casablanca or Cuckoo’s nest. Terrific films which I have viewed within the last year.

I’d love to play again using a different list. Someone already suggest IMdb - good idea! Other possibilities would be the Golden Globes or Baftas.

I saw it. I saw it in the theater on a huge screen a few months ago. It’s not annoying in any way. It’s not overrated in any way.

I wasn’t going to post in this thread because I think it’s pretty disgusting and embarrassing how people proudly flaunt their lack of taste, but hey, I got to cast the deciding vote for a truly brilliant, worthy film, one that I was sure someone was going to proudly knock off because they thought it was boring. I’m all happy and smug now.

I’ve seen Lawrence three or four times, and out of the roughly half of the top ten I’ve seen (surprised it was that many, really, I’m not exactly a movie buff), I’d say I liked Lawrence the best.

I saw Best Years of Our Lives when I was 15, not 5!

Fun game. Should we do Emmys now?

That could be fun Eleanor.

It would be. But I’m far too lazy to start a thread myself. Plus, I think we’d need to limit it to 5 year spans: 1965-1970; 1970-75 etc, otherwise it will be too confusing.
Someone take this ball and run with it!
