Ah, didn’t see Casino Royale, didya? I think Eva Green is one of the most beautiful women in the universe, but that dress did not do her any favors. She, like Jennifer Connelly when she won a few years ago, and way too many other women last night, should never go near beige again. Beige is Bad. Penelope pulled it off, but just barely. Women like that need to be in dramatic colors, like red or black.
Did anyone else realize that Naomi Watts is several months pregnant? If her dress looked poofy, that’s why. I liked the dress, just not the sleeve thing.
Favorites of the night:
Emily Blunt
Cate Blanchett
Helen Mirren
Reese Witherspoon
Best: Kate Winslet.
Runners Up: Helen Mirren, Jennifer Lopez
Overrated: Reese Witherspoon. Girl is getting boring. And waifish.
Worst: Sadly, Eva Green. One of the most gorgeous women there and she looks like the Corpse Bride.
Worst Make-Up: Cameron Diaz. Her face matched her hair.
Bad trend: sideswept hair (Gwynnie looked like a second string cheerleader)
Horrible Trend: Belts. Everywhere.
Worse Trend: Actresses with BMIs that would get them banned from fashion week.
Would mention guys, but other than O’Toole’s great jacket, Clooney’s dependable good looks and Hoffman’s post-bender hair, well, what’s there to say?
Miss Dunst is a major hottie, but she never looks good at these things–she has no sense of what to wear or how to present herself. Last night was no exception, with a crappy dress, horrible lipstick color, and unflattering hair.
And no mention of grooming is complete without giving a serious paddling to Philip Seymour Bedhead Hoffman.
This was the first time I’ve watched the Academy Awards in, oh, a decade. I saw some beautiful women wearing dresses that were quite nice except for the bust area. I guess I’ve missed the trend, but it was all shoulders and bound breasts. Everyone looked flattened out and not comfortable, the way a 17th century corset looks, pretty uniboob. Is this the look now? And why the hell why?
Helen Mirren was an exeption, very elegant. And Jennifer Dreamgirl, she could have had a better dress, but still was flattering.
I’m going to use Cat Fight’s format. Surely they won’t mind. So with that preamble out of the way, here goes my ultimately clueless ranking (and such)…
Absolute Best: There was no flaw whatsoever with Helen Mirren. Loved the dress and she looked stunning. Hell, I wish I’d looked that good at 22. Runners Up: Naomi Watts. Despite the fact that everyone else hated it, I thought it was almost first place as well. The color and design were a nice change of pace, but of course I’m probably the only one here who liked this one of lissener’s links. What else can I say? Cate should also go here. Way Overrated: I agree about Reese, but would like to add (usually, to me) Nicole, Gwyneth and (always) Beyonce’. Worst: Eva Green and Kirsten Dundst. If they would just share, we could attend a double funeral. Worst Runners Up: Meryl (I love Bohemian fashions, but I can’t imagine that the Oscars is where you’d wear them to), Ellen (although I may feel that way regardless – I think it’s because of the white patent leather prom shoes) and Jessica (the 80s called and want their colors back!). The good thing to remember is that despite my opinion that these are missteps, they’re all very pleasing on the eye anyway. Oh, and lighten up on poor Cameron. That was a lot better than normal for her. Worst Make-Up: Pancake white. It looked like a lot of these women used morticians as their stylists. Bad trend: This’ll be just me, but does everyone always have to confine themselves to either being ‘classic’ or pored into something of the more vavavoom variety? I’m not advocating that all we see is Bjork-like dresses, but my heart does a happy little flip when there’s some fun involved. Like attempts to be Bo Derrick. Worse Trend: Bandaging. What the fuck is up with that? Eva had it and to varying degrees; Jada, others I’m not completely sure of like Jody and Penelope, Latifa and Maggie (although they both get a pass from me because I adore them) and Gwyneth to the extreme. Ugh. Did someone get Gautlier to co-sponsor the event or something? Always Fiiiiiine No Matter What: Some repeats here, but Meryl, Latifa, Kate, Maggie, Penelope and now permanently Abigail Breslin. Some of those that are her elders could benefit from her fashion sense.
Finally, Anne gets a giant ‘meh.’ She’s so freakin’ gorgeous, yet it appears she’s angling for the future Descendent of Audrey Hepburn award. She should watch her own movies and hang out with a Barton or two to inspire an adventurous spirit.
Oh, and does anyone have a link to Keisha Whitaker’s rear view and any glimpses of Diane Keaton’s presentation? Thanks in advance if you can hook me up. If not, there’s always the ‘Go fug yourself!’ reply.
It wasn’t just the dress that made Helen Mirren look so fabulous, or the understated makeup, or the simple yet flattering hairstyle. What grabbed me is that she looks her age, isn’t the least bit bothered by it, and STILL is way sexier and more gorgeous than whole packs of the youngsters that surrounded her. No blank-slate plastic-surgeried mask of a face, she’s got wrinkles and neck creases and she wears them with grace and insouciance. Now THERE is a woman whose beauty resides as much in the character that shines clear as in the elegant features.
Heh. Can you tell I’m a fan? I first encountered her in Prime Suspect and was hooked from the git-go. Her Oscar appearance was simply stunning.
I agree ETF. I’ve been a fan ever since The Cook, the Thief, His Wife & Her Lover. Of course, it seems she’s always thankfully been that way.
Just another reason she’s on that last part of my list, as well as the other Kate, Cate. Now further I’ve got to ask who was the guy with the weird center part that ran like half-way down his face. I believe he’s Hispanic, but regardless, his hair is black.
Last of all, the absolute worstest ‘trend’ I noticed was frowning. Why the hell did everyone come across as so pissed? I’m sure it wasn’t fun to hang out that long with someone you can’t stand, and the clothes are awful uncomfortable, but really. Shouldn’t everyone just be grateful that fellow Naomi Campbell didn’t attack anyone? They should smile for safety if nothing else.
Forgot to add: I respect the hell out of Helen Mirren for never getting a nose job. That nose juts proudly from her face just the way God made it, and STILL she’s totally hot.
You know, it’s kind of too bad that all of these worst-dresseds are just badly dressed – none of them got one of those worst-dresseds that’s kind of an honour all by itself, an award for sheer chutzpah. Like the swan dress, or Cher’s outfits, or the peacock number Margaret Cho wore to the Grammys.
Loved:
