Oscar watch-along thread

Molly Ringwald looks like she’s wearing drapes.

Eric Rohmer died this last year and was a genius. His films were a seminal part of the New Wave and he will still be remembered a century from now as one of the best screenwriters the artform has ever seen.

But his films didn’t star Ally Sheedy, so of course we know who deserves the tribute.

Wait, they’re doing a long tribute to John Hughes? Is this typical? I mean, a bunch of people died, and while I loved his movies, how did he get singled out?

This is a bit OTT IMO. Bigger and much more important have gone before with a lot less.

Only for Stanley Kubrick. Or, it appears (RIP) mediocre 80s artifacts.

Is the director of this show a huge fan. This is just plain ridiculous now. WAY to long.

Rohmer died in 2010. Not that he will get this sort of tribute, but atleast wait until the year he would normally be remembered before you complain.

Now, I’m not saying that John Hughes deserved the extended tribute, but to call him a “mediocre 80s artifact” is a little undeserved; to a lot of people, his films defined an era.

Hey Christmas Vacation was one of my two favorite movies of the 80s! I don’t think they even used that film in the montage…

Mediocre may be harsh, but certinaly nothing above “slightly better-than-average”. His films are charming time capsule pieces, but nothing more than that.

And Rohmer will probably be in the tribute montage (it doesn’t go strictly by calendar year), and while I wouldn’t have given him his own tribute either, it’s only to point out how undeserving Hughes was.

I’m watching this on our big screen in HD, but I had to run in and make note that Christopher Plummer is in 3, THREE nominated films tonight:

  1. as the villain Charles Muntz in Up

  2. as the Doctor in the Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus

  3. nominated for Best Supporting Actor in The Last Station.

I can’t believe no one on the red carpet or show has mentioned that amazing fact yet.

Loved how they introduced the animated films!

Back on, later!

Logorama!!!

That film rocked, but I totally expected Wallace & Gromit to get it. Yeah!!!

Wow, I really want to see Logorama. I guess the Oscar effect DOES work!

I didn’t see it, but the Christie Brinkley scene from Vacation was there.

I think that Steve and Alec are doing a pretty good job. The “stiff” thing is kind of silly–when has Steve Martin not been stiff as a host?

What a bunch of negative nancys you all are.

1/3 for the shorts. I suppose if I actually saw any of them, it may have helped my chances…

Nice job not letting the second winner of The New Tenants speak. They cut off his mic about half a second into his speech.

Well, 1 for 3 on the shorts, but glad that the best Live Action & Animated reps took the award.

Rules for joint winners—delegate the speech, or be quick about it.

Don’t want to jinx anything, but at this point I’m alone in first place in the pool. Thanks, EW!

this up’s the chances for Star Trek winning best picture by…oh wait…
