Oscar watch-along thread

The first Oscar in the entire Star Trek franchise (though I didn’t think there was anything special about the make-up, to be honest, even though I liked the film).

Damn. My second miss. And I went 3-0 on the shorts. I was on a roll.

It sounds like they’ve gone back to saying, “and the winner is…” instead of, “and the Oscar goes to…” which was really lame and kindergarten. I’m glad to see it.

I wonder if it has more to do with being extremely well liked, and having worked with so many young actors who have gone on to have pretty amazing careers.

I’ve noticed. It’s a good thing.

man, currently in last place. A bunch of other people are 3-5, but for some reason some of the categories are worth more points than others…how stupid was I to think that something NOT made by Pixar would actually win Best Animated Film…

How can D-9 be adapted? Wasn’t it like 90% improv?

I thought District 9 was adapted from the video game Halo?

Well, so much for D9 getting anything tonight :frowning:

Score.

Wow, that’s a surprise! I thought “Up in the Air” was a lock for this one.

Did he remember to thank Sapphire?

Steve’s best joke thus far.

  1. I find no chemistry between Alec and Steve. I find their jokes strained, although some are zingers.

  2. I find the whole atmosphere subdued in an odd way. The applause seems tepid no matter the “cause”.

  3. Every woman is wearing the same dress, just in different colors, or so it seems.
I did like the tribute to John Hughes–made me tear up.
I also do like the candor that some of the presenters are “going with”. Queen Latifah looks fantastic!

I like that they’ve gone back to saying “And the winner is” instead of “And the Oscar goes to.”

What’s with the wall of lamps?

Muted-sound applause. I dislike muted-sound applause.

Robin has a beard…he’s gonna try for an Oscar on this one

Lifetime Achievement awards get little more than a collective burp.

Pathetic.

I didn’t get the Governor’s award–Lauren Bacall got it again(?)

Must start paying closer attention.

Glad Mo’Nique won.

I like that every time they cut to Meryl Streep she is laughing uproariously.
George Clooney looked slightly annoyed, but I guess that could have been an act and I was whooshed.
I always feel bad when the little people get played off because their speech is too long. I don’t really mind it for big stars.

Did they rename the lifetime achievement award? Or is that still coming up? Because that seemed awfully short for Corman and Bacall.

Texting at the oscars? Fine! Just don’t get caught on camera. Doh.

So far I have enjoyed the show.

My ballot is absolutely wrecked; I blew all the shorts AND Adapted Screenplay.

Incidentally, “District 9” was based on the director’s own short film. To be honest, it reaaaalllly stretches the definition of adaptation, not because the movie was ad libbed (the extent of which has been a bit exaggerated) but because the short film on which it was based did not contain any of the elements of District 9’s story. The only similarity was the CONCEPT of alien refugees living in a Johannesburg ghetto.

I got Mo’Nique, but so did everyone else in the entire world.
