Oscar watch-along thread

A “Character Study.”

Just because a movie doesn’t have a linear plot doesn’t mean it has no action. It’s a character piece.

These are good dancers and everything but it’s quite a jarring juxtaposition of b-boys to orchestral movie scores.

I think it’s kinda like the way a lot of people view the show House. Read the threads about each episode and you quickly learn that the people posting on the show here aren’t really that interested in the medical mystery part of the show (even though that’s how it’s advertised) but about the interaction between the main characters and (to some degree) the patient of the week. And that’s what I liked about The Hurt Locker. It’s not really about Iraq. It’s about a small unit under extremely stressful and dangerous conditions that has to trust each other and what happens when a new guy who, as Dio says, is so different from the rest of the unit joins and really changes everything.

The choreography for the Avatar bit was good. I am tired of break dancing–it was popular when I was 16. I am 47. Move ON, already!

Was Farrah Fawcett passed over during the “In Memorium” segment?

AHA!

I think I got it now.

The Hurt Locker == Reservoir Dogs.

Yeah, well, I thought Reservoir was crap also.

I mean, That’s how I feel about it, not afraid to lay that down there.

Did she ever make a theater release film? I thought she made TV movies.

I took offense at Mo’nique’s statement – “award based on the performance, not the politics”? Or I would have taken offense if I’d ever won an Oscar. It just seemed unnecessary. She’s been the odds-on favorite to win. Her performance was outstanding. Why inject politics into it?

I stopped watching after the horror montage. It’s been a very safe and boring show, IMHO.

Those are the best speeches - not “I want to thank my agent and my accountant” but “I want to tell all the kids out there it’s okay to be creative and different”.

What the hell was she talking about anyway?

In junior high, a kid did a book report on Jonathan Livingston Seagull. He did a plot breakdown, and then finished with, “It was OK I guess, if you like birds.”

May I suggest that if you want to discuss a particular movie, you start a new thread dedicated to it? This thread is for general chitchat about the awards show qua show, not the merits of specific films.

What film is in the lead now?

The only connection with the oscars and politics I can think of in recent history is the speculation that Crash only won best picture because they wouldn’t give it to Brokeback Mountain because, it is alleged, of teh gay.

Hurt Locker and Avatar are kicking butt.

Is it me or do all the men’s tuxes seem like they don’t fit well?

I wanted Food Inc (I have seen that and it is good) to win, but The Cove is also good (or so I’ve heard).

Wow, so far I’ve only missed two awards (both screenplays.) Not counting the short films since I’ve never heard one words about any of them before.

And everyone who has a DVR will now roll that back, JUST because abc changed cameras.
