Sometimes it doesn’t pay to try to better yourself. I have made no secret of the fact that I am a novice computer user. It seems I possess just enough knowledge needed to get me in trouble in this area.
I have noticed all of the links that read LOOK HERE and decided that it might be a lot nicer if I learned how to do this apparently magic trick.
So I posted a question asking how to do this very thing on the “General Questions” board. It seemed a likely place to ask a question. Obviously I was very very wrong. I was mostly answered with sarcasm, unhelpful remarks, and links to the correct answer. I know it took longer to insult me and give me links than it would have to give me a simple answer. It was implied that I was an interloper and unworthy of interacting with the regulars on the board. One russell something or the other implied that he had the power to send me to the pit if I didn’t watch my step.
Only one person {{{{{Starbury}}}}}} was kind and decent.
sometimes the big wide world can be a scary place. It’s true. There’s no place like home.
If you want to see what I’m talking about look here
Look, just try previewing your reply and you can see if the link works before you actually post it. You can’t have spaces between the tags. Look at the FAQ and follow the link to the vb tags. It ain’t that tough.
mojo57, besides reading the vb code stuff, you might try this:
When you see someone post a word or phrase that is a link, you can click on “quote” in their post to see how they got the link to appear the way it did. This will work for anything, like if you want to see how someone got italics, or sub-script, etc.
Some people get frusterated because it can be very time-consuming to explain every little nuance of how different programming languages work. Or even how a computer works–if the person is a complete novice.
My guess is that these people are used to being frusterated because, at least in my personal experience, people who ask for help are never all that willing to -learn-. And that results in explaining the same things over and over again. But then again–maybe they just weren’t taking your post seriously enough and didn’t realize how much it meant to you.
I didn’t see your original post–but I would have been willing to help! I hope the other nice folks in this thread have helped ya out!
When you don’t know how to do something on the board, come over to ‘About This Message Board’. There are several of us that patrol that forum that are very willing to help. We even read test threads and notice someone struggling and offer advice.
It’s typically a very friendly place to just try stuff and call for help after a few attempts and someone will show up. You don’t get nearly as many ‘RTFM’ (Read The F***ing Manual) replies as you will over in GQ.
There’s a good link at the top of this page, the FAQ. If you take a look at that, it shows you how use VB tags to do most of the common things you see people doing here like quoting, making italic or bold or underlined text, and hyperlinks. If you click here it should bring you right to the section about how to use the codes. Sorry to hear you had such a rough time, and hopefully this will be of some help!
I hope I don’t sound patronizing, I have years of tech support in my blood.
