Outgoing servers and Outlook

I’m a Mac OS X/Mail user trying to help a Windows XP/Outlook user.

In my account preferences in Mail, I can specify more than one outgoing mail server. It’s a very simple matter either to open the preferences and change the server, or, if a message will not go out over the specified server, I get a message asking me which outgoing server it should be sent through, and it keeps using that server until I specify otherwise.

My Windows using friend and I have the same issue. Our employer’s outgoing mail server won’t allow relaying from an external ISP. When I send e-mail from my work address from my laptop at home, I have to use my ISP’s outgoing server. And it’s a really easy thing to do in Mail.

Is there a way in Outlook to associate more than one outgoing server with an account?

I’m bumping my own thread just to report that I figured out a work-around.

In the version of Outlook my friend uses, when you hit “reply” to a message, the message menu bar includes “account,” which allows you to choose the account to use for the outgoing message.

So I just set up a second account for him with everything identical to his primary account except for the outgoing server. All he has to do is choose that when he’s e-maiing from home.

We tested it and --voila!-- it works.
