I swear there was a way to do this but damned if I can find it now.
What I’m trying to do is this: due to some weird business relationships, I will occassionally have need to send email from a different “from” and “reply-to” address than I normally use – i.e. instead of having the message appear to be from “kaio@ae.com” as I would normally send it, for certain messages I need it to be from “kaio@fs.net.”
Now I seem to recall there was a way, once you set up a new “Service” profile in Tools>Services, to choose which Service to send a message with… a “send with” button, or menu item somewhere. But I’m not finding it and the helpfiles both in Outlook and on the MicroSoft site have been unhelpful.
IS there a way to set which “from” and “reply-to” address a specific message uses? How do I do that?
Tools->Accounts>Mail tab. Select your connection, click Properties, and click the General tab. Both the “Reply to” and the regular email address fields are there.
There IS no “accounts” menu item under Tools. (MicroSoft was telling me to go there, too. WTF?)
There’s the “services” menu item, which could be the same thing, but if I understand you correctly you’re talking about just changing the From field on the account I already have set up. What I’m trying to do is have two separate accounts that I can choose from on-the-fly so I can pick where I’m “From” for any given message depending on who I’m sending it to. Yes, I could go in and change the From field on the account EVERY SINGLE TIME but that would be the pain in the ass that I’m trying to avoid.
Hmm… I don’t know about Outlook 2000, since I don’t have it installed at the moment, but is it possible for you to send your mail using Outlook Express instead? That SHOULD have an Tools → Accounts menu, which will allow you to set up more than one account simultaneously. And then, whenever you compose a new message, the “From” field becomes a drop-down list and you can choose which account you want to send email from. It should look like this screenshot.
I’m guessing the procedure should be similar for Outlook 2000… but like I said, I don’t have it installed so I can’t verify that for you, sorry
Not really, I rely heavily on the calendar and other features in Outlook. You’d think that the “full” version of the email client would include the same feature to choose the “from” field, but as I said there’s no “accounts” item under tools, and the from field isn’t even displayed in a new message. I’ve even tried the hack of just changing the “from” field in my current account properties, but you have to completely exit Outlook before it takes effect. I need something simpler. agh.
Is it possible the menu is collapsed to show only the recently-used entries? Do you see two little downwards arrows at the bottom of your menu, like this? If so, try clicking on the arrows and see if Accounts show up. I doubt that’s really the issue… but all the O2000 websites like: http://support.shaw.ca/emailnews/accounts2k.htm
and http://www.colostate.edu/Services/acns/email/Outlook2000.htm#config
seem to suggest that there definitely is an account menu. On the other hand, the second link shows another method of accessing that dialog… go to Tools -> Options -> Mail Delivery (the tab) -> Accounts.
No, I’ve completely expanded the Tools menu… all of the menus, actually, when I was looking for anything that might be relevant. I’m not a total goober.
I think it’s safe to assume that Outlook and Express don’t have enough in common to help.
Although I’ve figured out why I don’t have “Accounts” in my Tools menu – apparently “Services” replaces it when in Corporate/Workgroup mode – and the send/receive menu item seems to be exactly what I’m looking for in theory… when I tried it, the damn thing absolutely refused to send messages when I clicked on the FS account. It would receive them quite happily, but it wouldn’t send unless I clicked on AE or on all accounts. WTF? bangs head
Did you set up an outgoing mail server for the FS account?
And actually, I think I’m doing more harm than good here, making these wild guesses, so I’ll just stop now I hope somebody else with more knowledge can help ya
The accounts are identical except for the from and reply-to addresses, so yes.
And actually you’ve been helpful. Between you and some experimenting, I’ve determined that the button/drop-down menu I remembered does in fact exist, just NOT under the corporate/workgroup config. Once I switched to Internet Only, everything worked fine. YAY!
