EXCELLENT season. Episode 9 was absolutely heartbreaking.

Tom Pelphrey should get Emmy consideration for his role as Ben.

This was the first season I bought Jason Bateman’s character. And Laura Linney is fantastic as ever.

Of course, Ozark is one of those thoroughly enjoyable shows that has glaring plot holes:

  1. Branson, MO is 10 hours from Knoxville, TN. It was revealed by Wendy that Ben was killed 4 hours from Knoxville. So now I have to believe that Ben was at that restaurant for 6 hours before Nelson showed up.

  2. Marty stays at a fleabag hotel . . . . Even though he owns one.

  3. Multi-million dollar casino sales seem to go down within a day or so. Somehow months of endless casino commission approvals and red tape are set to the side.

  4. Theres no way Maya is 5-6 weeks out. I also was not clear why Marty didn’t want her demoted when it was he who got her demoted. Then, she’s still on the boat so was she demoted or not???

  5. No Mexican cartel leader with half a brain would ever dare fly into America even for a clandestine meeting. He’d risk being arrested and serving a life sentence in Super Max with El Chapo.

  6. Moreover, cartels do not place hits on other cartels in the US because they do not operate here. They resell to American based drug dealers. Furthermore, the US military does not go after cartels. Instead, with help from the DEA the Mexican army arrests them, and we hope their bosses get extradited to the US.

  7. Marty owns a giant 2 story casino with a giant bar on a vessel that looks no bigger than a large charter fishing boat.

  8. How did Marty know for sure that Frank Jr beat up Ruth when he threatened Frank. Sr?

  9. No way a mob boss would tolerate his sons dick getting shot off, let alone do business with the shooter.

Mods: sorry thought I put this in Cafe Society😒

Some notes:

Just finished season 3. The show is thoroughly enjoyable.

But the overall plot and sub-plots are completely absurd, to a ridiculous extreme.

The Ozarks and The Lake of the Ozarks and Osage Beach are all shitholes. Been there, done that, won’t do it again.

I choose to suspend my disbelief regarding reality when watching this show. Ruth is one of the best characters on television.

It’s one of them TARDIS casinos, don’t’cha know.

Also the FBI has enough to convict Marty based on his statements alone. He has all but confessed to the agent that he is in dealings with the Mexican cartel.

Totally agree. I love how she keeps saying how Wyatt is the smart one in the family, then she goes and figures out several ways to cheat a casino, and proves it can work.

That’s the one I can’t get by. The interior shots suggest a boat ten times the size of the cute little paddle-wheel they use for exterior shots.

The ending was magnificent, though.

Thanks for sharing but what does that have to do with anything?

Nitpick with the OP… Branson and Lake of the Ozarks are two dif places… just ask PK. He’s been there

Yeah but since they don’t mention what town they are really in I just used Branson to calculate the difference. Any way you cut it Nelson got there really damn quick.

I think it dawned on Wendy early in their increasingly futile road trip that she could take Ben to Siberia and he’d still find a way to fuck everything up so she put Nelson in motion long before the restaurant.

Ben calling Helen, then getting another phone after being caught, then running his mouth at the ‘Walmart’ so much that the cops came, etc. - she knew it was never going to stop.

It looks like Ben and Frank jr. played basically the same role - irritating and erratic person who becomes a liability and earns a shootin’ by and by, except we’re supposed to sympathize with Ben and hate Frank jr.

I didn’t sympathize with Ben at all. He’s got problems, and didn’t deserve to get murdered by a cartel hitman, but he’s a violent criminal and a fucking idiot. Hated him.

Watching it again I was reminded that Wendy grabbed the pieces of the phone that Ben used to call Helen. I don’t know if a broken in half flip phone is a viable tracking device but maybe it’s good enough for TV. Both actors were incredible in those scenes especially Laura Linney at the end when she was crying to Marty.

Were Wendy and Ben located by phone tracking? I thought that’s just what Wendy and Marty told the kids afterward when in truth Wendy had recognized the futility of trying to keep running and just revealed their location to Marty who passed it on to Helen and Nelson so Nelson could take out Ben.

I can’t really blame Wendy or Marty; the whole episode was like a video-game escort mission where the player has to protect an NPC who seems determined to walk out into traffic.

Your analysis of the situation is consistent with my conclusion.

Ben was going to get all of the Byrde’s killed. He had to go.

I guess the real lesson here is, don’t be afraid to tell your houseguests they have overstayed their welcome.

I’m in the middle of season 1. One spoiler that would have been nice is that even though it has Michael Bluth in it, it’s NOT a comedy.

Only problem is Ben was a well meaning but not bright guy who needed meds to treat a true medical condition.

Frank Junior was just an entitled bully and douchebag.
