I slice it into strips for salads. I think it looks better when it’s thick. The thin slices of beef tend to look bedraggled. Great for sandwiches, though!
Aw, thanks! I tend to babble.

Goofy cats! I was scooping the litterbox, so of course Buddy had to climb in during this operation and make a new deposit. Then he had the nerve to look a bit offended when that clump got scooped out.
Well, dammit, up at 3 again. Taz was yowling, which made me wonder if the pellet stove was on. It is. But walking the length of the house woke me up. Dammit.
I shall try to re-snooze shortly.
Good Mornin’ Y’all! Up and caffeinatin’. YAWN ‘Tis 50 Amurrkin out and clear with a predicted high of 86 and N.O.S. for the day. The big item on today’s agenda is deheathenization followed by a McN.O.L. I have Verger duty this mornin’. I wasn’t, but the other Verger was havin’ a bad sinus infection yestiddy and I told her to just stay home and that I’d be Verger in her stead. I’m all nice like that, dammit!
Nellie I am the bigger football fan and the diehard Dawg. OYKW really couldn’t care less and just watches with me, or wanders off to do other things if’n he does not want to watch. He likes to lie on the be and watch teevee, Netflix, and such, so that works out fine for us. I don’t watch pro football, however. I am way past bein’ over all pro sports.
Now I need more caffeine and to feed rumbly tummy. I have a buncha time, so I shall surf teh intartoobz a bit before purtification for deheathenization commences.
Happy Sunday Y’all!
Happy Sunday!
Up, caffeinating, breakfasted and got Sis off to Houston. I’ll catch up the chores today and pick up a prescription before messing around in the studio.
Stay safe and healthy y’all!
Finally managed to doze off around 5 and slept till almost 7! Poor Higgs - her bladder musta been bustin’!! But they’ve all been tended to and I’m having breakfast and caffeine. I need to load the dishwasher and scoop the cat box, and we’re planning to do the fire wood cuttin’ and collectin’ today. FCD insists he’s not going to the apartment today. We shall see.
The veggie soup I made was really good! Probably the best I’ve ever made - hope I remember how I did it. My soups, except for bean soup, tend to be throw-stuff-into-the-pot with little regard for measurements. But I do have 3 more bags of it in the freezer, so we have 3 more good soup meals ahead.
I have a pound-ish of ground beef in the fridge that will become sloppy joes today, and I’ll share it with MIL. Her cooking, mostly by choice, has become heating in the microwave. So I’ll plan accordingly with what I send her. Simple enough, I think. I hope.
Thus beginneth the day. Happy Sunday!!
Up, caffeinated, and sheveled. Off today. I shall do the usual cleaning and handegg watching, and perhaps a nap.
But without pro sports, how will you ever know the joy of pouring all your hopes and dreams into something, only to have them crushed by a malevolent billionaire for a few decimal points of profit?
Grump. Went to bed about 11pm last night, lots of activity and no nap so I was sure I’d sleep in good today…woke about 3am and was off-and-on until I got up at 6:15, so probable nappage. Need to make this a laundry day, should start the first load now, but we’ll see how the ambition meter reads. 59F going only to 80F today, but could get rain tonight.
I still watch the pro, swampy, sordid though they may be, seems Sunday is the only day I can be motivated to watch. Happy Vergering.
Raises hand.
In my defense, they are on a coat rack in an appropriate place out of the way and I don’t leave them lying around the house (well, hardly never).
Shoe, hope the date goes well; good luck Miss Gorsky (played off an old joke).
wet one, hope both the PT job and the Florida trip come off.
OK, off to internettin’ and getting the underwear in the clothes washer. Take care all.
FCM, I don’t remember if it was mentioned upthread, but meat loaf and meatballs freeze extremely well. I usually cook a double batch of either of these and freeze the second half. Also, rice pilaf freezes brilliantly. You can make a rice pilaf loaded with bits of veggies, and it will serve as both the starch and the veg dish at dinner.
Yesterday I applied for social security benefits to start in a few months. I’ll reach FRA (full retirement age) on February 1, 2023, so I’ll start getting some extra cash in the bank account. I won’t retire until a few months after that, so I’ll let it accumulate to help with moving expenses about mid-year 2023.
Another quiet day at Walking Dead Manor was interrupted by one woman screaming “YOU BITCH!!!” at another woman in the dining room. Keep in mind that these are all midwesterners who wouldn’t ordinarily use such language in public (unlike my wife and I who curse like sailors). There was a shocked silence in the room while I waited in anticipation of a cane-swinging cat fight. Instead, the other woman retorted with the equivalent of “Oh yeah, well duh.” Being finished, we got up to leave, and I leaned over and told the women at our table “Now, you bitches behave.” They giggled in spite of themselves.
Oh, and in less bizarre news, my trumpet-playing granddaughter’s HS marching band swept the awards for AAA schools in the statewide competition this weekend!
I always make 2 meatloaves, so now, one will go to the in-laws rather than to the freezer. I don’t do meatballs - if I should need some (can’t remember the last time I did) I’ll buy a bag of frozen meatballs. Because I can. And now I want Swedish Meatballs. Dammit.
I retired (the second time) a month before FRA so it worked out well. It’s nice to know that now, should I want to get a job (I made a joke there!!!) there would be no earnings limit. But we’d have to have a really serious change of life for me to go back to work.
I giggled, too! That sounds like something FCD would do.
How cool that your granddaughter plays trumpet! A squadron-mate of mine back in the early 70s played trumpet and she let me try hers. The sound I got out of it defied description, but it was truly unpleasant, bordering in unearthly. I admire people who can get music out of wind instruments. I’m a guitarist myself.
OK, dishes are washed, cat box is scooped, firewood is cut up and stacked. It’s supposed to rain tonight and tomorrow, but on Tues, I’ll uncover the wood so it can dry thoroughly. We’ve got a week of cool and dry ahead.
Guess I should get them sloppy joes cooking. Soon. I’ll do it soon.
She’s a slip of a girl, so I don’t know where the wind is coming from. She’s also in jazz band. Her little brother, who is ten, plays French horn. I’m also a guitar player and wannabe percussionist.
Me too. One for that night’s dinner, and the other in the freezer for later. Because the base is two pounds of ground beef and one pound of ground pork.
Happy Sunday!
We should have left for the armpit already, but I am lacking motivation and my son is sleeping.
If it wasn’t for needing to get some stuff, I wouldn’t go at all, and if I never head down that way again, I could be happy.
It was a little chilly at the park this morning. The dogs were a bit blah.
Barky and Humpy have been going to the other park, so it has been quiet.
As we were getting out of the car at the park, somebody rode by and shouted out a slur. My son thought it was directed at us, but I’m sure it was directed at the skaters in the park.
I think Turbo might be a good name, and Turbie rhymes with Cerby.
I guess I need to get up and get ready.
I dread the drive.
Cute pup. Hope Ripple and Echo can cope with a new packmate. Do you know if the imminent household member gets along OK with cats?
Good morning everyone.
It’s currently 47 degrees with an expected high of 81 and very smoky air. Yesterday was very smoky too. There is no rain on the horizon until Friday, but they’ve been teasing us with rain for quite some time, so I don’t believe it. I’m still waiting for fall, damn it. We’re halfway through October!
Sleep was sporadic and my nose is a mess. I was really hoping I’d start feeling better today, especially since tomorrow is one of my in-office days. Maybe by the end of the day, things will start tamping down. I can hear the husband coughing upstairs. He wanted to turn on the fireplace late last night and I told him no. My sinuses are alternately so dried out that they’re bloody and still producing snot, so now I have to gently dab.
That’s a handsome dog, Sari.
Not much on the agenda for today other than laundry.
Wow, I’d love to know the story behind the woman screaming that insult, Chef. I also chuckled at your departing words to your table mates.
Welp, onward with the day. I hope you all have a terrific day.
I worked at a Hallmark store for a couple of years while I was in college: I will almost definitely wind up needing to do some kind of PT work after I “officially” retire, and I’ve often thought that I’d be happy to work at Hallmark again. Now, though, I wonder if any brick-and-mortar Hallmark stores will still exist by the time I retire (in another 14-15 years).
Even though the Yankees lost last night, I finally got a decent night’s sleep! I didn’t wake up until 9am (oops), but I figure I needed the lie-in. I’ll be leaving for Baltimore shortly.
Have a great Sunday, everyone!
Noooooo! IMHO there’s a 99% chance it’s a scam/virus. Did you reach out to the daughter?
Sometimes you make it hard for me to love you…
Frankly, I’m shocked by the rudeness of that person! In what world is it appropriate for a store employee to ever question/comment on a customer’s preference?!?
Very awesome! Congrats to her and the band!
When it comes to jazz, I definitely prefer trumpets/brass to saxophones. It seems like everyone on the DC scene plays sax, but luckily we also have several seriously talented trumpet players.
Oh, he’s beautiful.
Thank you.
Echo gets a little jealous, but I think it’ll be okay. He grew up with a cat, and should be okay.
I wanted to add, I have a cousin Fred, so that name isn’t a good choice.
I had a dog named Charlie, and my granddad Charlie wasn’t too pleased about it.
Neither was the neighbor named Charlie.
I had a dog named Troy and one day some boys were walking past my house. One of them yelled over and asked what my dog’s name was. I said Troy, and he and the other boys started laughing and told the other boy, see, we told you you have a dog’s name.
Sloppy joes are simmering - they smell good! I should get 2 freezer bags out of this batch. And I now need to do a serious grocery shop - I’m down to one can of diced 'maters, 2 cans of 'mater sauce, and one of 'mater paste. That’s just not right!!! Plus I need other stuff. Dunno if I’ll go today or tomorrow.
And I like Turbo - it suits him. My daughter’s friend had a service dog named Nitro - I thought that was a cool name, too. Nitro had to retire, tho - hip issues. So he’s now their pet and they’re waiting on another service dog.
Happy Sunday, all! The sun is trying hard to shine through the haze but isn’t having much luck. I brought my spider plant in from the balcony because I don’t think smoke is good for plants. Or don’t plants mind smoke? Trying to decide if I should bring in the snake plants, too. The others have to stay out there: some are in a window box some are way too big and heavy.
I’m washing the bathroom throw rugs today–so exciting!–and making cupcakes for son’s visit tomorrow. I decided on spice cupcakes with a penuche buttercream. I have penuche recipes and can find buttercream recipes but not penuche buttercream, so I’m going to try winging it. The kids should call, always the highlight of my Sundays.
She was trying very hard to be helpful (Her tones were kindly, and she brought me sample after sample.) while also, I think, establishing herself as an expert. Had I insisted I liked the cheap one, I’m pretty sure she would have asked me why with genuine curiosity. The problems were that a) I didn’t care/couldn’t tell the difference. I just wanted some roast beef, dammit, and b) There were other customers waiting, none of whom seemed particularly interested in this deli version of The Pepsi Challenge. (I actually took the Pepsi challenge, and when I preferred the Coke sample, the woman switched the samples very openly and said cheerily, “You picked Pepsi!”)
I love this. Think of yourselves as #@%&*! missionaries.
Sari, I’m besotted with that dog. He’s GORGEOUS, and there’s such intelligence in those eyes! Now I hope you get him. So Niece1 doesn’t even know her husband has found a home for the dog? She’ll be OK with it, though, right?
