The reason you (generically speaking) should not rejoice at the sufferings of others is because it reflects on the kind of person you are. The fact that the target of your rejoicing is a hate-filled dickwad is no reason to be one too; in fact, it’s rather tragic that a hate-filled dickwad has succeeded in spreading his hate-filled dickwaddedness to others.
Oh yeah – when I had mine, the jokes came thick and fast. Even so, I can’t imagine making fun of someone else’s cancer – I haven’t the right.

I’m sorry, I was just thinking in terms of Robertson’s own ass. I wasn’t thinking about how others who have been touched with cancer might see that remark. I was insensitive. I apologize.
For some reason, reading all of this gave me flashbacks to this short-lived Pit thread, where the OP cheered on the fact that Rush Limbaugh lost his hearing, as well as these two similar MPSIMS threads, where a few Dopers seemed to revel in the news.
Disappointing to see, really. I have nothing but unmitigated contempt for Pat Robertson, but I wouldn’t exult in his illness. I feel that if I were to do that, it would make me no better than he is.
To put a finer point on it:
In the second case, if one had no opinion, or didn’t care about the cancer in Robertson…it’s hard to imagine that person starting a pit thread.
The notion of starting a pit thread stating the happiness associated with someone getting cancer…yeah, lacking some taste and common sense.
I should clairfy my position:
If someone murdered or raped someone in my family, then YES I would be glad if they had cancer. That is if I didn’t get to them first.
But the OP… well it just doesn’t sit right with me.

Actually, why is it right at all to be glad that anyone has cancer? In the first case, it may be right to be glad that they are incarcerated, but why should we want to see anyone suffer at all? What does seeing someone suffer do for our loved ones?
I prefer not to rejoice over the fact that anyone at all has cancer.

My stepfather succumbed to pancreas cancer a little more than a year ago, after suffering for about 4 months under hospice care. He also had prostate cancer 12 years earlier, which, as we all know, makes you a prisoner to your own body in many crucial respects. I don’t think I’m even over his passing, yet. I hope you will soon see how wrong of you it was to write this, but until then, fuck you.

Dont give Spiff a hard time. Pat Robertson is a waste of care and feeding. He is a hatefull swindleing con artist who uses the bible to con fools out of money via his millions in donations every year to keep the 700 club up and running. The only person more desrving of cancer than good old Pat Roberson is that other narrow minded prick Jerry Fallwell. I hope the 2 of them die a slow painfull lingering death. If the World trade center attack was caused by “godlessness, gays and lesbians” then Pat Robersons cancer was caused by useing the name of god to make a buck. I hope he loses bladder control after they do radiation therapy and he has to wear depends for the rest of his days. If would be kind considering all of the mindless hate he has spewed out over the years. You can all tell me that I am wrong, but I will make a special trip to go dance on his grave if this thing kills him.

Look on the bright side, I limit my hate to a few specific targets. I dont hate huge swatches of society for the crime of being different. IMHO Pat Robertson is in the category as Hitler. They both hate the Jews and Gays.The only real diffrence between the two is that Hitler had his aryans and Robertson has his fundamentalist christians.
I don’t wish cancer on anyone, despite how awful a person they may be. It’s a horrible, horrible affliction that is incredibly painful not only for the person, but for their friends and family as well. No one should be made to suffer so much.
That being said, I do wish Pat would simply SHUT THE FUCK UP!!

And while I think Spiff’s OP was rather over the top, I also think those clinging to the “I’d never wish a painful death on anyone!” mantra are also a bit full of it, have never had serious trouble in their lives, or are willingly self-employed as human doormats.
