Pearls before Swine

My favorite strip, and today I don’t get it.

What’s to get? Pig is just having “one of those mornings.” You never had “one of those mornings?”

I expect it is an atrocious pun for which, in civilized countries, Pastis would be tarred and feathered.

Man, if you’ve never had “one of those mornings” then you are a very lucky person.

Somedays your goal is to just survive.

It usually makes such perfect sense

Pearls before Swine is one of my top 3 strips currently being published. I know Pastis throws in some labored puns, some real groaners, but in this case I think you are trying to read too much into it.

Poor Pig has somehow gotten himself into this ridiculously bad situation and well, being Pig he is pretty much clueless and just has to take it with a sigh. That’s just par for the course for Pig.

<sigh>
Oh well.
Thanks.
This sort of thing never happens in The Family Circus.

NO sort of thing ever happens in Family Circus.

I wish it would. Billy…meet Crocodiles.

Ha Ha Ha.
I wish I could find the link where Pastis sent them all to Gitmo…

Crocodiles attack a Volksvagen in which Billy and Co. attempted to flee:

“Me love deeses dings. Crunchy on outside, chewey on inside.”

Jar-Jar’s a crocodile???

Dat decent croc accent.
I bet Rat knows how to deal with fan boys…

Not familiar with the strip I take it?
(no offense to the fans - but I find fresher humor in 20 year old Ann Landers articles)

But it does make perfect sense! Pig got out of bed, looked in the mirror to find a zit the size of Delaware on his(?) nose, ran outside screaming, tripped over the hose, it wrapped around his short little leg, he fell, rolling down a hill, causing the hose to bind him up. He hopped back home and asked his mom to put a bag on his head to hide the zit. And she did.

I love that strip.

And I have nothing to contribute.

How do you make a good red wine?
Take away his propaganda pamphlets and tweak him on the nose.

There were a few previous stripswith the seal coming to the neighborhood and a killer whale moving in. It’s sort of the whole zerba-crocodile thing played out with the seal and killer whale. Makes perfect sense.

Anyhow, PBS is the only comic I bother to read in the paper these days. Pastis puts out some real groaners out there, but I love him for it.

My favorite recent ones include

This and this from the gingerbread strips.

and this awful pun.

Pastis’s drawings maybe somewhat simple, but I love the amount of expression he can get in his characters from a simple tilt of the head, furrow of the brow, etc. I especially love how adorable pig can look, especially in the second frame of my second link. One that nearly breaks my heart every time I look at it is where pig misinterprets something rat said and thinks the world is about to end. In the last frame, he’s sitting solemnly alone by a tree, wearing a football helmet, and holding a sign that says “Goodbye world. I loved you all.” (Or something to that effect.)

I’m such a softie.

Y’know, dates would help – I read the 1/15/06 Sunday strip about “whine country” and was wondering what was so perplexing about it…

Sorry, 14 January.
