Some of the best scambaiting dudes in the world have set up a location where they are meeting for a few days this week to pursue their favorite activity – tormenting the crooks who steal money from innocent victims. These include Pierogi, Trilogy Media (Art & Ashton), Pleasant Green and even Jim Browning. The fake Call Center has about 20 specially prepared desktop computers running virtual OSes, with fake bank accounts and other bait material ready to go. If you follow this genre, you should recognize all of these names; these are the good guys, the white hats of the hacking world.
It looks like their intentions include disrupting the criminals’ workflow, wasting their time, preventing scams from claiming more victims, obtaining info (like bank account numbers) that makes prosecuting possible, even getting some (real) money returned. Since these are really smart, computer savvy people, they are recording everything (“each and everything”), and live streaming the entire event.
I won’t give a link here, since each of the scambaiters is handling a live feed thru their own channel, so it’s not hard to find multiple sources to watch. It’s a hoot.
If you are familiar with the genre, you will recognize the usual scams: refunds, tech support from “Microsoft”, “Norton” or “Amazon”, overpayments, HTML bank account manipulation, and much more. The scambaiters are really having fun, and the scammers may have met their match!
It’s a bit of good news in a gloomy world. Anyone else watching this?
