Pepsi/Mountain Dew Throwback: Who's tried it?

I just picked up a 12-pack of Mountain Dew Throwback when I spotted it at Safeway.

Yum! Definite difference; I can actually taste the sugar

I honestly don’t think I’ve ever had MD with sugar before. I really didn’t become a soda drinker until my late 20s, in the early 1990s. I believe all the various soft drink makers had switched to high fructose corn syrup long before then.

If this stuff is only available until June, I think I must stock up.

I spotted some at a gas station way out of town, but I’m too scared to buy it. I figure I might like it too much and be really disappointed when it’s over.

You can actually get soda with sugar instead of corn syrup every year- at Passover time (which is now), they make Coca-Cola and Pepsi with sugar instead of corn syrup so that it’s kosher. They can be identified by the Kosher marks- on bottles of Coke, look for a yellow cap with Hebrew lettering. Pepsi’s caps are apparently white.

We get the Coke advertised a “Mexican Coke” (8 ounce bottle is $1.00) and I noticed the ingredients list “sugar.” But the yellow cap Coke available at passover says “Sucrose.” I know sucrose is table sugar but I wonder if there’s any difference or if it’s just a labling thing.

I’d like to see some blind taste tests to see if people can pick it out. I mean actually pick it just getting one or the other rather than opposed to tasting both and telling which is which.

Unfortunately, I’m not much of a fan of cola (of any brand). Though I have been drinking the new Pepsi Max, simply because these days I’ve mostly switched to drinking diet sodas and Pepsi Max doesn’t taste like diet soda at all.

I’m really jazzed as Pepsi is my absolute favorite brand of pop, and lately I just can’t stand anything sweetened with HFCS. Real sugar is noticably crisper and lighter. HFCS always seems to coat my tongue. Gross.

I really wish Pepsi would return to cane sugar forever, it’s so much better. But I’ll take it when I can get it, I had no idea it was a Passover/kosher thing. Yay Pepsi!

I was wondering about that. I had always heard that Coke from Mexico, in Bottles tasted different, because they used sugar.

I had Pepsi Throwback yesterday, for the first time.

I’m 26, so I think I can safely say that it was my first time having Cola with real sugar.

It kinda grew on me. At once, I didn’t know what to make of it, but then, it kinda had a Diet Rite Pure 0 vibe going on for me.

I will enjoy it while it is here. Undoubtly it will go away. Much like I did with Holiday Spice. [Pepsi: If you are reading this, bring Holiday Spice back. PLEASE.]

Diet Rite Pure 0 actually kinda centers and grounds me.* Pepsi Throwback attempted to do the same thing. I could tell that P T was closer to Diet Rite than Regular Pepsi was.

If I could try it again with Pizza Hut Pizza, I could give a definite answer.

It would be cool if Throwback was exclusive to Pizza Hut, like Baja Blast is to Taco Bell. (Then we would need drinks for KFC and LJS, A&W already has A&W)

I can taste the difference between Coke Classic and Non-Throwback Pepsi on a consistant basis.

The problem with that, is that I actually crave both, at different times.

And yes, I am from Atlanta, Pepsi is still “” a coke “” to me. - It’s a southern thing.

*I have ADD / ADHD . Ritalin, a common drug given to people with ADD is actually a Stimulant. I am not saying that Diet Rite is Ritalin, but I feel stimulated by Diet Rite, to a point where I can tell I am more focused that when I’m not drinking it.

I tasted my first Pepsi Throwback at a church function and now I’ve been buying that in 12-packs instead of regular Pepsi. It tastes much better. If it is going to be discontinued in June, I might just stop buying Pepsi after that and start buying more root beer.

I finally caved and tried out the Mountain Dew Throwback.
Thankfully, I didn’t like it. I didn’t hate it, but it didn’t taste like Mountain Dew. It tasted more like a Sprite/7-Up. It took me a while to figure out why, until I checked the ingredients. No orange juice. Most people don’t realize that regular Dew contains concentrated Orange Juice, which gives it its “Dew” taste and makes it different from a lemon-lime drink.

Not sure why they got rid of it for the Throwback. I bet I would love if they hadn’t changed that.

I saw the ads for this and was intrigued, because I have read for years that Passover Coke was better than regular Coke.

I drink maybe three carbonated soft drinks a year, so I’m not an expert; but, on the other hand, I have a pretty good palate, so …

I did a side-by-side comparison of Pepsi with Pepsi Throwback, and Throwback wins. There is a harshness in Pepsi which is not present in Throwback.

So, to those of you who drink a lot of this stuff, I suggest that you load up on Throwback.

Maybe that’s how they used to make it, hence the “throwback”.

I remember what soda tasted like before corn syrup. Pepsi throwback and Mexican Coke tastes like soda did when I was a kid. I think there is a market for this, and both Coke and Pepsi should take advantage of it.

Huh, is that what it was? I could have sworn that the citrusy flavor in MD came from grapefruit.

Anyway, I picked up a six-pack of MD Throwback bottles a few weeks ago, and while I liked it, I did notice a difference in flavor. It’s better over ice than simply chilled.

I tried the Mountain Dew throwback last month and was indifferent, but I drink maybe two or three non-diet sodas a year so I’m obviously not their demographic anyway.

I’ve tried both the MD and the Pepsi, and while anymore I dont’ want to drink a whole can due to the sugar (I normally drink Diet) the taste reminds me EXACTLY of what MD and Pepsi tasted like as a kid. VERY good stuff…

I’ve had the Mt. Dew Throwback. I like it a little better than regular Mt. Dew but it wasn’t a huge difference for me. I do hope it sells well enough that they keep it around.

What is the different in price?

in the BP station I usually stop at for my soda, nothing.

At Giant Eagle the other day, the price was .50 with my Giant eagle card.

The same price as the regular stuff around here.

I’ve tried both the Pepsi & MD throwbacks, and can’t tell the difference at all between them and the regular stuff. So meh.
