I tried a bottle last week and thought it was great - and I usually either drink Coke or generic cola, staying away from Pepsi, which has some weird acrid flavor I can’t place. Apparently Pepsi products were on sale last week, so my wife came home with three twelve-packs of it. I should get a bottle of Mexican Coke again so I can compare the two.
I hope this is a regular thing, though, where they release it annually or semi-annually and not just a one-time thing that will be lost to the ages.
I tried the Mountain Dew throwback. Did not like it. I try not to drink a lot of soda, but when I do I drink mostly Dew. I agree that it tasted more Sprite/7up-y. I couldn’t even drink a whole can, I just really did not dig it.
The difference is greatly exaggerated. One night last week I was with a guy who was about to open a bottle of Pepsi. I asked if that was the new Pepsi Throwback, and he said “hold on and I’ll tell you. I HATE high fructose corn syrup, I normally only drink Mexican sodas but this is all they had.” He takes a drink. “Yep, this is it!” I didn’t see “Throwback” anywhere on the label, so I was wondering outloud if they just “thew back” all their Pepsis for a limited time. He didn’t know but he handed me the bottle to inspect. Nope, didn’t say Throwback anywhere. I check the ingredients: "Water, high fructose corn syrup . . . "
I tried the Pepsi Throwback last weekend. It tasted just like I remember Pepsi tasting as a kid. Great. If it weren’t for the fact that I generally avoid caffeine these days I’d probably buy a case. Hell, I might anyway and just drink them sparingly.
I don’t bother with Mountain Dew though. Not my favorite.
The argument is that sugar is too expensive. Fine. Charge more, then, for pity’s sake - it works for gasoline.
Making both but charge an additional buck per six pack, though, that must make too much sense to merit consideration. The people who can’t tell the difference will buy the HFCS stuff and save a buck; the rest of us will be in bliss.
I am a full-on MD addict and have been anticipating the throwback formula since it was announced a few months ago.
I was somewhat disappointed.
It does seem to have an aftertaste that reminds me of diet Dew. I’ve probably downed a couple twelve packs of it over the last couple weeks and will continue as long as it lasts.
My verdict? Better than regular formula but not an “angels singing” experience that I had hoped for. I’m old enough to remember the original and I’m not convinced that it is the same.
I had a hard time finding Pepsi Throwback where I am. It was always sold out. I finally scored some this past weekend and was thrilled to taste the Pepsi of old. I will mourn it when it’s gone. I really wish they would keep it around and include Wild Cherry Pepsi and Caffeine Free to the sugar only line. I would be in heaven.
I really had a flashback to childhood when the can I was drinking was getting flat and warmed up (I actually drank pop warm a lot as a kid) and that old flavor was back. Ahhhh.
What an unfortunate name for a soda. When I think of Throwback I think of throwing back a fish because it’s too small. I know they are thinking of it like ‘throwing back a couple of brews’, but it just doesn’t work for me the way they want it to.
I think you are one of very few people who would think of fish. throwback has been used to describe something from an earlier generation for years now. Just hasn’t been something you have seen, I guess.
I am looking forward to trying it. I didn’t realize Mountain Dew was doing it too. Mountain Dew used to be a favorite, but i haven’t tried it in 10 years or so. So, I won’t notice the difference, but I bet I will enjoy it.
Tried Pepsi throwback last weekend. It wasn’t bad, but I don’t see what the fuss is about. It didn’t taste all that different to me from regular Pepsi.
Caveat - I’m not a good person to judge, as I typically drink diet soda.
Maybe YOU can actually get it every year at Passover time, but not everyone is so lucky. Thanks to threads on here mentioning it, I’ve looked for it, and never once been able to find it. You must live in an area with a significant Jewish population, but not everyone does.
Likewise, “Mexican” Coke. They just don’t sell any such thing around here, even in the “Mexican” section of the store.
As for Throwback, I’ve only tried a few sips of the Pepsi version so far, and frankly, I’m not too terribly impressed. It almost tastes like a melted Slurpee, which isn’t that great a flavor. Someone who I know tried the MD version and didn’t like it at all, but I’m still interested in trying that if I get a chance.
I have been unsuccessfully looking for Passover Coke for years, including at the grocery right behind the local Jewish Community Center.
This year someone told me to go to liquor stores. I heard it third hand from someone who had intended to order some soda online as a Christmas present. The proposed recipient thanked her, but said it would have been needlessly expensive because he could get it at the liquor store during Passover. I promptly forgot until I saw this thread just now, so I didn’t check it out myself. It’s worth a shot, though.
I just wish I could try it. I’m diabetic, so I stay away from the regular soda at 160 calories per can. Not that I’m complaining, diet soda has really improved the last few years. But I’m sure if I bought any, I’d be going through a 12 pack a week. Since I drink that much diet soda anyway, zero calories is better for me than 2000.
I suspect what people are “missing” with the MD Throwback is that “syrupy” feeling that Dew with HFCS has. Diet Dew is also missing that, so that may be why people are getting the same impression with the Throwback. Without the HFCS, the Dew has more of a clean finish instead of the thick, sticky-sweet finish we’ve grown accustomed to.
Truth be told, I’ve found that syrupy HFCS Dew effect useful when I’m singing. It seems to “lubricate” my throat in a way that plain water doesn’t, and helps me to sing higher, longer.
As to Passover Coke, I don’t know that I’ve ever seen it here, but then if we have a significant Jewish population around here I’ve never heard of it. However, we have a very large Mexican population and so the Mexican Coke is pretty easy to find. I’ve never tasted it, though; as I already mentioned I’m not a big cola fan.
