Pepsi/Mountain Dew Throwback: Who's tried it?

Pepsi Throwback is hard to find in my area, too. I just today came upon a 20oz. of it.

For my money, it’s a lot better than regular Pepsi. It gets rid of that sort of weird Pepsi aftertaste that keeps me from drinking the stuff regularly.

I hope this isn’t too off-topic, but I’ll tell you a drink more people should be lamenting the loss of: Gatorade in glass bottles. That was great stuff. And is it me or is Gatorade a lot sweeter than it used to be? The stuff doesn’t even quench my thirst anymore. Unless I dilute it at least 1:1 with water it’s like drinking maple syrup.

In my travels, I come upon sugar based Mountain Dew quite regularly. I agree it is not as good as the real syrupy sticky-sweet thing. Sugar Mountain Dew lacks sparkle and bite, and just tastes unmemorable and insipid.

Does anyone know when Mountain Dew switched over? During my freshman year of high school, 1995, I “did the Dew” every single day. Multiple times. Everybody I knew did; it was by far the most popular soda. Now the stuff almost literally makes me gag and most people I talk to seem to feel the same way. I’m interested in whether my tastes changed or the formula did.

I tried Pepsi Throwback yesterday, and I was impressed. It had a clean, crisp taste and didn’t leave that syrupy sensation that most colas do. I’d love it if they made it the “default” Pepsi and continued to produce it.

Gatorade in glass bottles? When the hell was that on the shelves? I’ve never seen it in anything but plastic, and the idea of it in glass just strikes me as bizarre.

Gatorade held out longer than any of the other mainstream drinks (besides the stuff still in glass like Snapple.) It was still in glass when I was in high school in the mid/late '90s, when everything else had already switched over to plastic.

Edit: this website says they switched over in the US in 1998, but that glass is still used in some markets. I gotta find those markets.

I’m lucky enough to have a steady and affordable supply of Mexico-made Coca-Cola available to me year round - and it is my pop of choice.

I tried both Pepsi and Mt. Dew throwbacks, and they are very good. Back when I drank HFCS Cokes and Pepsis, I still preferred Coke because of it’s less sweet taste, mixing ability, and it didn’t coat my teeth with a film like Pepsi. This new (old) Pepsi tastes closer to Coke, richer and not as sweet. I had sugar Pepsi when I was a kid- glass bottles too. This is that recipe.

I’m not a Mt. Dew fan anyhow, so no real comment there – other than it’s nice to have another sugar soda available.

I remain optimistic that at least one of these will stay around forever.

Weird. That’s about when I stopped drinking Gatorade and I don’t remember glass bottles at all.

I wonder if this is why I don’t like the throwback version – I have been trying to describe what it is about throwback Dew that I don’t like, and the best I could come up with was “it doesn’t taste right.” I figured it was the sugar, but I never bothered to read the rest of the label to figure out what else might be missing.

Now, personally, I wish they would bring back the “Live Wire” flavor in wide distribution forever, amen. I can find it in a few random stores, but not everywhere, and of all the flavors of Mountain Dew, “Live Wire” has always been my favorite.

The first time I ever saw Gatorade was when I was in junior high school ('78-'81), and it was in plastic bottles even then. At that time it seemed it only came in 64- and 128-ounce bottles, too. Maybe it was just the smaller bottles that were glass (though if there were smaller bottles back then I never saw them). Maybe it was a regional thing.

Where is Central Cascadia? Unless it’s outside the US, I really think you’re misremembering. My memory, plus everything I can find online suggests that it was only in 32 and 46-oz glass bottles until introducing smaller bottles in the early '90s to compete with All Sport, and introducing plastic bottles in the late '90s to compete with Powerade. And I found a source that definitively states that 128oz bottles, their largest ever, were first introduced in March of 2003.

Central Cascadia = Washington state.

I could easily be misremembering, particularly re: 128oz bottles. I do distinctly remember a standup comedian mocking Gatorade’s thirst quenching properties by stating, “Yeah, but it only comes in 64 ounce bottles. I think drinking 64 ounces of anything will quench your thirst!”

But I didn’t actually start drinking Gatorade until the early '90s, and I honestly don’t remember ever getting it in a glass bottle.

Well, I’m not saying you would misremember a hardly significant number from a comedy bit that you heard presumably well over a decade ago, but I will say that stand-ups aren’t known for their reliance on factual consistency in their material. That was one of the easier ones to find sources for; it absolutely, definitely, came in 2 sizes way back when: 32oz and 46oz, and they were glass.

It’s funny. When you first started talking about the glass bottles I thought you were a crazy person. But, then I had a strong memory of going to the deli after basketball getting a green gatorade from the fridge and drinking straight out of that glass bottle. That would have been circa 1988 in Philadelphia. Cisco isn’t crazy at all!

I keep hearing this, but every time I chexck the sodas in the “kosher” section of our stores, no matter what time of year, it’s invariably sweetened with High Fructose Corn Syrup – it says it right on the label, along with the “Kosher” symbol. And, yes, I’ve checked it at Passover, too.

I like the throwback. Even Pepper Mill, who generally hates soda, will take a sip.

Unfortunately, it’s mostly disappeared already. But I found a store with cases left, and stocked up.

It’s my thread, and I can misremember whatever I want!

I’ve tried Pepsi Throwback; it’s outstanding! It doesn’t leave your mouth so sticky, and it has a really nice cola taste. I have a bottle of Mountain Dew Throwback too; I haven’t tried it yet.

I’ve just tried Mountain Dew Throwback; it’s quite nice! The taste reminds me a lot of a lemon-lime Jelly Belly.
