According to this source, Gatorade only came in 32 & 46oz glass bottles prior to the acquisition by Quaker in 1983. At that time, Quaker introduced a 16oz bottle.
Frankly, I thought Gatorade initially only came in powdered form for a while, but that may have been due to a very frugal mother.
I’m glad I found this thread. I’ve been seeing Jones Soda products with “Pure Cane Sugar” prominently on the label and wondered what the deal was. I have tried it on occasion and find it has a fuller flavour than much of the mainstream pop.
interesting things to note with this… 1- Snapple is now selling a “made with natural sugar” version of their drinks. and 2- The local Giant Eagle is now selling 6 pack bottles of their own brand of soda (cola, orange, cream soda, root beer…) made with actual sugar instead of HFCS.
Gatorade’s edge was that it was made with sucrose and glucose, not fructose. Sometime this decade, they changed the formula to include HFCS as it’s main sweetener. As a result it tastes like shit and doesn’t do what it was originally formulated to do.
I recommend trying the G2 stuff. It tastes better, has 1/2 the calories, and included vitamins and electrolytes that regular Gatorade doesn’t have. the only downside is that there are only 3 flavors available at the moment: Lemon-lime, Fruit Punch, and Grape. the upside is that all 3 taste great.
Because of this thread, I went out and found a 12pack of both. Tried the Pepsi last night, in a glass with ice, and thought to myself “Holy shit! It tastes like Pepsi tasted when I was a kid! Awesome!”
I have the Dew in the fridge for later, but I already went back out and bought another 12pack of Pepsi TB, even tho I rarely drink soda anymore.
Pepsi Throwback: Lacks the sticky sweet, teeth chattering taste that’s weaned me off regular Pepsi. Reminscent of RC cola. Only drawback is that if it’s not ice cold, tastes like the sugar has condensed.
Mt. Dew Throwback: Doesn’t remotely taste like regular Dew, more like a lime heavy 7-Up or even ginger ale.
I looked all over for both (up here in Tacoma) and could only find them at Target. Do they have an exclusive deal, or where else are you finding them?
It has to say “Kosher for Passover.” It says this in hebrew and looks like this:
Being marked “kosher” during Passover does not make it Kosher for Passover, and there is nothing unKosher about Corn syrup when it’s not Passover so the Kosher symbol standing alone means nothing.
I was expecting a huge difference between the two. I remember the Dew when I was a little kid tasting radically different from today’s Dew, but the difference between Throwback and everyday Dew is surprisingly subtle. Throwback seems a bit smoother sliding down your throat.
I guess I can retire the nostalgia for old-style Dew I’ve been nursing for 30 years.
I was pretty excited for the Mountain Dew Throwback, because I love to do the dew, and everyone is always talking about how real sugar is the way to go. I probably drank about ten while they were available, trying to get used to the flavor. But I can safely say now that I think they’re a little gross. Sure, the HFCS Mountain Dew is sweet, but it tastes synthetic enough that I don’t really notice the sweetness, just the flavor. The sugar Mountain Dew tastes like, well, someone dumped half a bag of sugar into some water, which is what it is. Pretty disgusting, but I guess I kept coming back for more, trying to acclimate to the taste. I’m glad it’s gone so that I won’t be tempted anymore. Just made me want to brush my teeth.
Only about 40% of dudes can tell the differeance between soda with HFCS and soda with sugar. Fewer still can tell cane from beet sugar- in a soda that is. Of those who can tell the two apart, most do prefer sugar to HFCS and cane to beet.
However, most Coke with “real sugar” comes in glass bottles, and soda in glass bottles also makes a better taste for a good number of people.
Thus, soda with real sugar in a glass bottle (which Pepsi Throwback doesn’t use but the new Pepsi Natural does) would taste better to quite a few dudes.
My global conspiracy theory is that *some *studies show that HFCS has a very low satiety rating thus one drinks more soda. I offer as evidence the fact that 12 or 16oz was a “large” when I was a kid, now 32oz isn’t even the largest.
