Someone called Loveline with a question about that subject, and I was surprised at how rude they were. They basically told the caller that she was an idiot for not knowing about it.
Well, first of all, I don’t think that very many people would feel comfortable going into a library and asking where they can find a book on this subject. Secondly, why is reading about something better than actually talking about it?
Here’s how I try to look at it… I often see topics here posing questions where someone will reply with a link to a website they found using a conventional search engine. If you stop there, it would seem that the OPer could have just as easily used that search engine to find that page on their own and not bothered the teeming millions with a question so easily researched outside this site. Some people berate them for not having done that. Then, lo and behold, someone will come along and dispute the information found on that linking site. A debate ensues and opposing opinions are bandied between several posters.
Now, if the OPer had used a search engine, found that page and stopped there, believing they had all the information they needed, they wouldn’t have had the benefit of hearing from someone who could perhaps dispute the information contained there.
In addition, sometimes people prefer hearing from fellow posters they’re already familiar with to get personal opinions or hear from someone who’s had personal experience, and actually have a conversation rather than reading newspaper articles, journals or someone else’s home page. Cyber or not, human interaction is a nice thing. And isn’t that why we’re all here in the first place, as opposed to just sitting around asking jeeves everything?
It doesn’t sound like a place I’d enjoy very much. And admittedly, sometimes you will find the same attitude here as well. However, it always seems to me that the posters who most often get their panties in a wad over this kind of thing are the ones who are the least happy with their posting experience here at SD. Of course that’s not a fact, but just a personal observation on my part.
It is possible to have both.
Happy posting!
