Personal Appearance Flamers - FUCK YOU!

Well, this is the first Pit thread I have done where I do not flame myself. My goal is to flame two types of people:

  1. Those who think it’s ever so funny and cute to flame people because they are “ugly”, or look “scary”, and

  2. Ugly dopers (like myself) who don’t flame these people right off the board and into Hell where they belong.

Just how fucking ignorant, petty, and stupid is it to flame someone about their personal appearance? How fucking childish? Some of the threads and posts I have read in the last week make me feel like I’m in motherfucking grade school again : “Republicans are so ugly”, “Democrats are creepy looking”, “Nader looks like his face is upside down”, “Hillary is a fat cow”, “plain-Jane face”, etc.

This board is supposed to be about fighting ignorance. Please present your case, oh you flamers of us ugly people, as to how making fun of people’s appearance:

  1. Is fighting ignorance,
  2. Is relevant to the policies and politics of the person in question, and
  3. Is indicative of you being anything but a biased, prejudiced, assholic motherfucker?

Think about this folks. Think about where this comes from. A person who flames someone because they are “ugly”, “fat”, “has a big nose”, “looks creepy”, or even are “plain” - why is this different than flaming a person because they are “black”, “Jewish”, “lesbian”? What really was going through your fucking heads when you typed these things?

And I’m not talking about mocking people who are just messy and dirty, and neither are these people. They are mocking people for having “ugly” faces, bad or crooked teeth, weight problems, bad hair, scars or disfigurement from acne or an accident - well FUCK YOU! You all come off looking like a motherfucking 24-karat hateful, inbred dumbass.

And now to the rest of you Dopers, so many of which I like and respect:

Why do so many of you sit quietly when this happens? Why do you not say something? My God, it’s not like most of us are supermodels or Chippendale guys - when someone insults Hillary for being a “fat cow”, they’re not just insulting her - they are insulting every single overweight female on this entire board! I don’t care if the shithead has 5000 posts either - these actions are wrong, and we as a community devoted to fighting ignorance need to grind these ass-goblins and their hateful ideas out like a proverbial cigarette butt - to extinguish their fire of intolerance and prejudice.

You can’t even fall back on the excuse of “oh, I don’t want to clog up the board with flames” - that’s bullshit! Whenever concrete does his bi-monthly appearance here, people pile on to flame him like starving hyenas on a wildebeast carcass. Here’s a clue for you - how about flaming that has a purpose? Flaming that tells these syphillitic little butt monkeys that their actions are wrong, and we on this board will not tolerate ignorance, prejudice, and mockery of those who don’t look like us?

If you cannot find something about the person’s speach, actions, politics, associations, etc - then why the fuck are you flaming them? How dare you hateful liberal posters on this board, the defenders of the “comman (wo)man”, how dare you make fun of “ugly” Republicans? Is that the best you can do, you little shits? And how dare you hateful conservative posters, the defenders of individuality and choice, how dare you mock Hillary as a “fat cow”? Or make cracks about “how effeminate” a gay man looks? Is that the America you want your kids to grow up in? Goddess help you if your children are ever not perfect little blond-haired blue-eyed perfect-toothed fucking Britney Spears or Leonardo DeCaprio clones.

Note in the above, before you start to flame back, I’m not referring to all liberals or conservatives, or even most - only the hateful ones. So click “Clear Fields” if you are starting to flame me back about that last paragraph.

Fuck, reading these appearance flames, and seeing their acceptance by the silence of so many here that know better, makes me wonder if somehow I’m on the wrong board. Or should not just leave, and find a place where I won’t feel that if I met Dopers IRL at a dopefest, half of them would not take one look at me and mentally go “eeeeeewww”.

Well??? Am I really so far out in left field here?

You’re my hero.

This is the Pit, but fuckit, I don’t care.

{Una}

{Anthracite}

Yeah, I know it’s the same person. I wanted to hug her twice. Problem, fuckhead? Thanks. Now go play with sporks and electrical sockets.

Well??? Am I really so far out in left field here?

(I don’t know how to use the “quote” thingy - sue me)

Yeah, you are.

Why do you pay any attention to references that annoy you? And the people who make them?

I read small minded comments about physical appearance, and unless the poster is making a joke, or has otherwise proved that they are not so small minded, I skip right past it thinking “small minded idiot - pay not attention to poster - kaaaachiiing”.

“Fighting ignorance - it’s taking longer than we thought”

Sound familiar?

Flame everyone who makes stupid remarks…

Bwaaahhhaaa! Go ahead. Your post count will look like Handy’s in no time.

Sometimes post count is an indication of, among other things, intelligence.

In this case it seems to be just that. IQ points, even. Anthracite writes an intelligent OP and Lost replies by sticking his/her tongue out.

Get lost, Lost. (Sorry, couldn’t resist.)

Anyway, thanks for the rant, Anthracite. It really is childish to make fun of people for physical aspects beyond their control, and the board as a whole should be less tolerant of this sort of thing. It always makes my heart sink when people are so thoughtlessly cruel — it reminds me of the living hell I endured in Junior High :frowning:

Geez, now I feel guilty. Very powerful argument.

You aren’t giving anyone credit for ignoring those threads, are you? Ignoring them isn’t enough?

Look, there aren’t that many of those threads (relative to the whole board), and certainly you’ve seen Dopers fighting ignorance about weight, religion, race, sexual orientation, etc. many times.

Making jokes or judgments based on personal appearance is silly, and people have been called on it before, within the thread. (Please don’t ask for links, I mostly remember the weight-related stuff.)

The proliferation of ugly people topics is happening for the same reason other topics proliferate – because we lack imagination, or get bored, or momentarily stupid, and maybe we’re looking for attention. Somebody does it and gets responses, and the bandwagon starts rolling.

But I’m glad you brought it up. It made me think, and I’ll probably be more aware of this in the future.

I don’t think I have posted to those threads. But I am not going to do a search to find out because they mean nothing to me.

I think some of those “ugly” threads are posted mostly for attention ( well aren’t all threads) looks like in this case they are getting more than their fair share.

Look at that, all of my favorite posters in one place!

Anth, I’m sure you’re beautiful.

Of course, I don’t think that any of the folks mentioned are ugly. In fact, I think that Hillary is quite attractive, as is Katherine Harris (although I would recommend less make-up), and Karen Hughes. So perhaps me thinking one is attractive is a death knell.

So I take it back!! You’re UGLY just like that Julia Roberts woman!!

This is a pet-peeve of mine, too. I am 5’4" and weigh 154lbs. I personally think I look absolutely fabulous. I could not get over the “Monica” bashing that went on during the whole mess over her being “fat”. “Jeez, if he was gonna get a blowjob, it didn’t have to be someone so fat!”, etc. I was like “Damn, her figure looks like mine? Am I a fat-ass?”

How rude can you be- Having a big nose, humped back, ugly haircut, or whatever personal physical attribute should not open you up to public riducule. During that whole affair (no pun intended) I kept thinking “Jesus Christ! She’s a human being! She’s reading this stuff in the Post and other papers about how she’s undesirable. That really sucks”.

I have avoided the “so and so is ugly” threads for the same reason. It’s childish and silly. Remember, even public figures are human. Bitch about their policies, their opinions, or their politics- leave their fat asses alone.

Zette

Zette–I agree with you on “Monica”. I saw her IRL at a book signing in Oxford (I’ll tell ya, we get all the celebrities out here :)), and believe me, she was not in any respect “fat.” Then again, the people who call her “fat” are probably using Ally McBeal as the standard

Everyone is beautiful in some regard. That goes double for all the women who post on this board. OK, massive suck-up, but what can I say?

Anthracite, know what? I agree with you. I can’t count the times when I was younger that I was introduced to a new co-worker or such and took an instant dislike to them because they were “too tall”, “too short” or just ugly.

Know what else? Most of them ended up being good friends and just plain good people. I think the “instant judgement” thing is something we outgrow, or at least I like to think that I did. When you take the time to look a little deeper than the skin, most folks have a few redeeming qualities. (still looking for mine)

Thanks for bringing it up.

There are several things that you take into consideration when reading a degrading post. First, the maturity of the poster. Just because they sign up and join SD doesn’t mean they have full mental capabilities. Second, if you take the time to respond to such posts you are merely giving the poster what he wants, your time and attention. Only after having observed a poster at length can you determine if the threads they post are worth reading. Most of the time they aren’t. Getting into flame wars usually isn’t the answer to the problem. You aren’t going to change someone’s opinion, especially if they aren’t mature enough to know how to post a decent thread.

Take heart Anth.

Superficiality is its own reward.

I agree with you, Anthracite. Just because it’s common, doesn’t mean it’s not childish and hurtful.

One example of this sort of thing that really bothered me was in 1992, when Clinton ran for office. Chelsea was, what, 15? And yet pundits were relentlessly mocking her physical appearance. Unbelievably scummy.

I did read a funny story in the paper, though. Apparently some DJ made a crack on the air that she “looked like she got hit in the face with a sack of nickels”. Within an hour, over 100 people had called the station to complain, including the DJ’s mother, who told him not to bother coming home until he apologized on the air. Which he did.

Well all I can say is an attack of anyone over anything is silly. Lead by example. So it’s not ok to flame me because I have freckles but it is ok to flame me because I am stupid? Give me a break. Speaking of brakes, it’s a big bad world out here and if you truley want to fight ignorance then stop with these stupid post. What was your point and what have you taught?

My view is that you think that it is ok to flame, just not about certain subjects…makes no sense. I think people will always disagree over everything, which is OK. What is not OK is when you you do not offer or add anything to the discussion and , to use a football term, pile on.

I await your flames. Go ahead I can take it, just like the ugly, fat, stupid, people. After all I did not invent the mirror.
“Spell checker down for repairz”

Forgot to add that sometimes we are all silly.

Tram, you used little words and all, which I appreciate, but I still can’t tell – what’s your point?

Very funny and creative I might add.

The point is that no matter what you will offend someone just by opening your mouth, it’s not your problem but theirs. Post on and don’t not keep certain subjects in the dark, or the do not flame list, ignorance will breed. Don’t you think that the trigger words (flames) help to move people?

//insert point
You can use no word(S) to describe a person that does not generalize to the point of ignorance, think about it.

So if someone’s being offensive, don’t call 'em on it?
