I have some theories about that. first of all, I believe that kids do NOT think the same ways that adults do. Remember, these are people to whom Santa Claus is perfectly reasonable.
They don’t necessarily know who “Strangers” are. They certainly WOULDN’T be that nice lady there.
Examples from my son (who is bright). Age 2 or 3. Would get on the phone with some one and say “I got a new toy, see?” and hold the phone next to the toy. Pointing out to him that HE couldn’t see the other person did not convince him that this wouldn’t work.
age 5 or 6. He and I had matching shirts from a festival. we were wearing them, and I joked with him that my SO “Wouldn’t be able to tell us apart”. My son was astonished that SO could.
Same age. He’d seen cartoon GI Joe talking about the “dope man” , was convinced that he’d know the dope man. How? 'cause he’d have purple hair cut in a Mohawk (that was what the “dope man” looked like on the cartoon)
When I was 8, I wasn’t allowed to walk through a wooded area by my home “without an adult”. I walked through with my two friends, Stuart and Bruce, since they convinced me that 16 was an adult, Stuart was 8, Bruce was 8, 8 + 8= 16. Made sense to me. I of course, got into trouble.
