I’m not sure if this is the right forum. If not, mods, feel free to move it.
I don’t wish to be an alarmist, but since there are so many pet lovers on the Dope, I thought this might be important enough to share.
Time Magazine is reporting that Menu Foods, based in Ontario, said it is recalling over 80 brands of pet food due to dogs and cats developing kidney failure after consuming some of the pet food. About 10 have died. The pet foods have been sold in the U.S. by major retailers such as Safeway, Kroger, and Walgreens. The company said it makes pet food for 17 of the top 20 North American retailers. It is also a contract manufacturer for the top branded pet food companies, including Procter & Gamble Co.
The article has the company’s web address and phone numbers people can call for information
Wow. I just switched from Iams to Purina last month. Mainly because my roommate bought a bag of Purina when I asked her to pick up a new bag of cat food.
Considering what a massive recall this is, hopefully your post helped get the word out to some folks who may not have seen the other one. I feel very bad for anyone affected if it does turn out that the food is to blame for those pets getting sick.
Sunshine Mills, a maker of pet treats such as “Pup-Corn” for dogs and “Puffs and Purrs” for cats also makes “house-brand” treats for stores. They’ve announced a release of treats made with wheat gluten that’s contaminated with melamine.
Affected brands are:
Lassie
Nurture
Pet Life
Stater Brothers
Companion
Champion
Perfect Pals
Ol’ Roy
I bought a bag of the Ol Roy peanutbutter flavoured dog biscuits for my horses. I haven’t checked the numbers, but I haven’t fed any. I’ll throw them all out.
