I didn’t finish the whole test. Can I make it up with an extra credit book report?
BTW, don’t believe 'toons when he promises banana bread; I was supposed to get some last time he passed through my neck of the woods, and I’m still waiting. (We really need a boo-boo face smiley.)

The Philadelphia Phillies’ mascot.

The '73 Flyers. Remember, only the Lord saves more than Bernie Parent.
What is M.O.V.E. ?
The radical “back to nature” group founded by John Africa that forced two standoffs with Philadelphia police. The first, in Powelton Village in 1978, ended with the death of P/O James Ramp. The second, in West Philadelphia in 1986, resulted in a conflagration that destroyed 60-some homes and killed a bunch of MOVEians.

City Hall, until Willard Rouse built Liberty Place.
There is a Girl’s High. Is there a Boy’s High?
Not anymore. Central High, the second-oldest public high school in the US, is located a block away from Girls’ High at Ogontz and Olney Avenues. CHS was all-male until it was forced to go coed in 1983 to settle a Federal lawsuit. CHS, BTW, is the only high school in the world empowered to give Bachelor of Arts degrees to those who graduate with honors. (Full disclosure: I’m CHS 247/June '88; the first full 4-year coed class).

JFK Plaza, in “Love Park.” It’s that statue with the words in a square.

Something like 25? (Assuming he started at Delaware Ave and went to the Art Museum)
Why does the name Frank Rizzo strike fear into the hearts of Liberal Philadelphians to this day?
Because, “The best way to deal with criminals is spacco il capo.” He made Dick Daley look like a wilted milktoast. And they didn’t take any photos of G. Gordon Liddy with a nightstick in his cummerbund.
The Flyers won the Stanley Cup in back-to-back seasons. What two seasons were they?
1973 and '74, I think.
What was the seating capacity of JFK Stadium, home to the Army/Navy Game AND “Live Aid” ?
Beats hell out of me.

True.

Search me.
What is the difference between Mummers and Mummenschantz?
Mummenschantz doesn’t have a museum at Front and Washington.
When you stood in the cuploa of City Hall in the 1960’s, and looked dead north, what did you see glowing at night at the top of Broad Street?
It’s either The Ivory Tower of Truth (Inquirer building) or the sign for Botany 500 suits, which was at Broad and Diamond (I think?). I wasn’t born till 1971 so I can’t say for sure.
Philadelphia was founded on principles of religious tolerance. Who founded this movement in the City, and where is the most famous house of worship of this group?
William Penn, and the Old Meeting House at 4th and Market?
Could Sally Star have dated Gene London?

If I ask for a Frank’s Black Wishniak, what is it I crave the most?
The best black cherry soda in the universe.
If I ask for a Tasty Kake, have I been illiterate?
Nope. That’s the way ya spell it.

Fairmount. It’s the first prison built along the lines of the modern penitentiary concept.
If one stops to watch the skullers and can see the sunset behind them, which bridges might one be standing on?
Strawberry Mansion or Market Street?
Who is the Kelly Drive named for?
Jack Kelly, Grace’s brother and a longtime civic leader.
When Charles Dickens visited the United States, where was one of the few places he insisted upon visiting?
Bookbinder’s?
Last but surely not least, where was the Main Point, and who were the Werewolves of Bryn Mawr?
Beats me. It’s been a loooooong time since I listened to John DiBella in the morning.
Soccerbaby, I’d be more than willing to give you a ride down if you can work it out. The only problem is that I’m leaving Friday night and staying with the folks for Christmas, so I won’t be going back up until the 26th. I’d gladly offer the parental palace as crash space for Friday but it’ll be filled with the Christmas crush of kin. Think “Christmas Vacation” without the humor.
Otherwise, I can pick you up at the train or something if you can make it.
oh man youse guys are da BEST !! Here I am having a perfectly AWFUL morning, and I sign on and find this?? How cool. Okay, lemme go through the two main contenders here…and fill in the few blanks. Boy, you two are good. I wanna party with y’all.
First, to address **iampunha[/s]‘s query. <Deep freakin’ sigh>. It’s family/Hannukah Weekend for me then, we are on our way through from NY , to Philly, on to Pittsburgh. I’d have better luck winning the PowerBall than I would bailing out that evening to go and hang with my true friends. It’s the life I have to live, I enjoy my Doper friends and will attend whenever I can, but the level of tension that rises in my chalet whenever I talk about meeting Internet friends face to face makes the idea of going with the Wifestrocity an impossibility. Believe me, I’m none too happy about this.
Now then, Zappo- I’ll send you a few loaves of my famed Nanana Bread with Chocolate Chips, you can serve it around to my dear Dopers in my stead. Deal? We’ll email this and nail it down, ok?
On to the Quiz !
Plastic Fantastic was a used/bootleg/new record store and head shop on the Main Line- not too far from the Main Point, actually. It had an amazingly deep selection of decent bootleg recordings. Back then, I was amoral and thought nothing of scoring a nice bootleg. The finest one I put my hands on- and still own, although it’s warped <sob> was Yes: In The Round, 1978 Tour. Lovely set of disks.
Rosebud was an antique store near 5th and South St.
What you saw glowing of you looked dead north up Broad street was an IMMENSE glowing B. It was the logo for Broad Street Chrysler/Plymouth, a car dealership that sat at Broad and Cheltenham Ave. With a straight line shot and an unimpeded view, it showed for miles. Easily seen from the air.
Bingo baby, it’s at 21st and Fairmount. Long time ago I shot a documentary on the prison, spend a few weeks inside of it day after day. I hear it’s a real “museum” now with tours and such. Back then, we had it to ourselves, aside from the rats and the pigeons. It was true solitary, meals work and exercise were done alone. Pretty brutal…
Also the Girard Ave Bridge, I think.
Charles Dickens insisted upon being given a full tour of Eastern State Pennitentiary when visiting the United States.
DiBella in the Morning ! WAHOOOO ! I hear they had a HUGE blowout for Pierre Robert recently. He’s got more than 20 years under his belt, but they somehow made it a 20th anniversary. I had the thrill- for me then- of being invited INTO the WMMR Studios on Rittenhouse Square ( are they still there? ) while he was ON the air. I had a friend who was tight with Pierre. I sat in on about an hour of air time, never spoke, didn’t touch a thing. He was gentle, funny, and very nice to the geeky high school kid.
The Main Point was a coffeehouse of great repute. It became a club where MANY well known names made their bones. Billy Joel was an early hit there. They had virtually every kind of music. I saw Stan Rogers in 1979 there, and the night before it had been some punk group that had been spitting stage blood out into the crowd as they played. There were bits of dried stage blood to be seen here and there on the floor. The recent band of some notoriety who had played the Main Point when I was there? The big silk banner along the back wall, with the name, ** Gentleman George Thorogood and The Delaware Destroyers**. The Main Point almost went under at one point ( pardon the pointed puns ) and musicians staged a fundraising marathon to keep it afloat. Warren Zevon came, and did a home-town version of Werewolves of London, where he made fond mention of the Werewolves of Bryn Mawr. ( Bryn Mawr is both the neighborhood where the Main Point was, and the infamous women’s college ). Bruce Springsteen showed up, as did Jackson Brown- reportedly on a bicycle… Money was raised, they stayed afloat for a while longer. I’m not sure when they finally went under.
Chrome Spot, you were at that famous Frampton/YES show? I hate you !!! Yes, you can make it up with an extra credit book report. What famous silent film mogul started as a Philadelphia businessman? ( Eve, no helping !!! )
Deal. My addy is on my profile, feel free to drop me a line and we’ll synchronize the space/time coordinates.
Bummer that ya won’t be there, though.
**
Aaargh! I should have known this one. I remember the big “B” from driving down Cheltenham Avenue. By the time I paid attention to such things, though, the place was a furniture store.
I remember Broad Street Chry/Ply as Broadway Chry/Ply, which is what they became after they relocated to 611 and the Fairway in Jenkintown. They were famous in the Eighties for having the most annoying car dealership commericals in the Philadelphia area. <loud nasally pitchman> “BRRRRRROADWAY CHRY-SLER-PLYM- OUTH. . .JENNNNNNNNNNNK-IN-TOWN!” </nasally pitchman> He was even worse than the smirking bastard that shilled for Sheehy Ford. “If this emblem isn’t on your car, you probably paid too much.” What the hell does he know about it?
**
Oooh! Oooh! I think I know this one. If Chrome Spot doesn’t get it, I’ll take it.
Another one for you: Which TV mogul started out in business with a cigar store in Philadelphia?
I meant to do that, really. Frampton and Yes, my first ever rock concert at the tender age of 16. I’ll have to get to the liberry before I get started on my book report.
Things I Will Miss Because I’ll Be Visiting Relatives in Florida-
1 The Mummers parade. I was gonna wear the costume I made for the Henri David ball and strut along on the sidewalk too.
2 The Rocky Run. Here my plan was to dress up like Burgess Meredith and bicycle alongside the race while yelling lines at the runners "You gotta eat lightning and crap thunder! Greasy Eye-talian monster!"
3 Geobabe's miniskirt. Must stop weeping before I ruin my keyboard.
4 The chance to party with Esprix. 1 He rocks. 2 I have this hunch that he has connections-VIP access to clubs, better service any place on South Street, and admission to exhibits at the Franklin Institute that the us shmoes never get to see.
Well, it looks like I will be attending this one. I just confirmed with Girl Wonder (now that I think about it, I like that better than Supergirlfriend), and we’ll be meeting up for a late lunch or something. Can someone tell me what section of town we’ll most likely be in, and what kind of sleeping arrangements there will be? I plan on leaving late Friday night. From Louisville, Philly’s about 11-12 hours driving, so I’ll hit town around noon or so Saturday.
