Philly Doper Dinner -- let's show Alan Smithee how it's done!

At the recent Baltimore museum outing, Alan Smithee mentioned he’s in Philly once a week, on Fridays – I of course immediately offered to gather the troops for a Doper dinner.

Date: Friday, March 11th (or Friday, March 25th if that’s better for people).

Time: He’s available after 4:00 – I was thinking 6:00, since a lot of us work regular type hours. Some of you may be available in late afternoon to show him the sights or go out for coffee or something.

Place: He’ll be by Temple, which isn’t an area I know at all well. He mentioned a fondness for “interesting” (ethnic) cuisine, which got me thinking about one of the Indian places in West Philly (there’s an Ethiopian place out there too, I think) – or for “local favorites,” which would be either cheesesteaks or Tasty Kakes (or both). Neither Pat’s nor Gino’s is exactly the kind of place where we could settle in for a Doper Dinner – Jim’s on South St., maybe? or someplace else on South St.? (I like Copacabana, or whatever that place at 4th and South is called. There’s also a good pizza place down at 2nd and South.)

Suggestions for venue are definitely open!

So – who’s in? Don’t make a liar of me – I assured him we could get a lively and interesting bunch of people together for this…

There is (or was) a great Indian place in Uni City-True Pisces should know, as that’s more her backyard than yours. I’ll have to see what the work schedule has going on once we get closer to then.

i believe that would be copa banana.

So, r c – does this mean you’re going to join us, or are you just stopping by to mock my brain farts?

dwc – the date is open; if the 25th is better for you, we can go for that.

The 11th is Spring Break and might be doable, if we don’t go to DC.

Robin

Hmmm. My lookup of that name shows them at 3rd & South Streets, which wouldn’t be University City. The place I remember was out past the old Chestnut Cabaret.

The Copa Banana remark was directed at me, with regard to my confusing the name of a certain South St. restaurants.

The Indian place I was thinking of is Tandoor India, which is out at 40th and Chestnut. Might people be interested in that?

I’m up for Indian food in Unicity.

A great Indian place? The area around 38th-40th near Chestnut is practically a “little India”. There are dozens! Try to find one of the all you can eat places. Don’t forget your student ID if you have one!

Indian food and Dopers? Count me in.

Oh, Alan Smithee, the fun you’re about to have. seethes with envy

I miss my Philadopes!

After my previous post I was looking online at Philly Indian eats-you are quite right. New Delhi is an AYCE place at 40th & Chestnut-not sure if that’s the one I went to or not.

Student ID? Bwahahahahah! Haven’t possessed one of those puppies in decades.

i had a bit of a spree at mineralistics on mon. aft., i passed by copa banana.

i’m watching the thread for time/place/ date lock down.

Indian food, hmm? I’m in. Though I think we still have to do the cheesesteak/soft pretzel/Tastykake thing for Alan.

danceswithcats reminds me that truepisces is planning to throw a party for verrain at some point in March – I’m not sure the two events would be mutually exclusive, but I’ve emailed her to see if she’s picked a date yet. I’m thinking the 11th for this, since that seems to be a good date for people.

As far as which Indian restaurant – I leave it to others who know the choices better. The AYCE place certainly sounds like a good idea – cleophus and Alan Smithee have student IDs, even if the rest of us don’t…

Okay, heard back from TruePisces, who says her get-together will be on a Saturday, either the 19th or the 26th. Plus I just remembered that the weekend of the 26th is my nephew’s bar mitzvah, down in DC, so the 25th isn’t so great for me. Thus –

Official date: Friday, March 11th.

Official time: 6:00

Official venue: Some Indian restaurant in the vicinity of 40th and Chestnut, exact one TBA.

How’s that sound to people?

I wasn’t sure if I was supposed to check in here or just let the mysterious workings of the board take place and wait to hear from Twickster (who was very nice to offer to set this up for me–Twickster, you rock).

It appears plans are now in place, and it all looks great to me! I love Indian food, but I’m even more excited about meeting new Dopers! It looks like some really awesome folks will be there.

And moi, if you want to ride up with me, no reason not to…

I can’t believe I waited so long to start going to Dopefests. You guys are so much fun. I can’t wait!

Nope, I kept meaning to email you the link in case you hadn’t seen it, but hadn’t gotten around to that yet. Glad you found us.

All are welcome – feel free to join us, even if you’ve never been to a Doper Dinner before. We’re nice folks and it’s usually a pleasant evening.

(Hm, I’ll email DavidM, who I haven’t seen around much – is there anyone else who should get a special invitation?)

My friend M, who’s come to the last couple dinners, will probably come – is there such a thing as a Doper groupie? If so, he is one.

Someone should email quiltguy – I guess that would be me.

An update from TP regarding this soiree that she has asked me to pass on:

Because they have some late arriving company, they might not make dinner, but will make every attempt to hook up with the crowd.

I’m still waiting to see how my work schedule gels-it’s the $40 round trip that can be a deal breaker for me.
