That was a very neat occurrence, and I am so glad you linked it. It would have been great to witness in person, but the photographer did a great job so we don’t miss out on it.

Where do you get “rare” from? The article linked in the OP mentions this is a biannual migration, i.e. a regular occurrence. Like the swallows at Capistrano. Or any other migration.
Well, at least ETF and I will be prepared for the eventual Ray invasion. But the rest of you will flounder when the rays are out of school and head to the beach to catch some humans.
My first thought was of those weird, flat, cave-dwelling creatures in Kurt Vonnegut’s ‘The Sirens of Titan’. Possibly a little far-fetched…
